MS Rep On Halo: ‘A Game That Has Shaped Entertainment History And Defined A Generation of Gamers’

Halo 4 is undoubtedly the biggest game of the year and is perhaps the final swansong for Microsoft's aging gaming hardware, the Xbox 360. (Halo 4, Xbox 360)

Arguably, CoD shaped THIS generation of gamers, but there's no denying Halo's influence. It still has some of the purest no-frills multiplayer around, even though - of course - there are plenty of "frills" if you want them.

That is spot one!!

Doesnt matter your console allegiance, your prefered type of game or your stance on hardcore gamer or casual gamer, CoD is the definition of this console cycle. All about multyplayer and unfinished products. Patch after patch...

Halo 4 seems to be a good game! A good balance for single player and multiplayer. Im a SP guy, so MP for me is just a bonus. My copy arrives wednesday and Im looking foward to it.

If you look at the impact on competitive multiplayer and social gaming that Halo 2 made at the end of the last generation, the success of that game and the emergence and evolution of Xbox Live is what's responsible for the landscape of competitive multiplayer being the biggest focus of this generation. Call of Duty may have stolen Halo's thunder as the reigning king of online multiplayer but had it not been for Halo 2's success, I don't know if the landscape of this console's generation or even XBox Live would be what it is today. Even prior to Halo 2 and XBox Live's success, Halo Combat Evolve focus was bringing competitive multiplayer to a console and having that formula work successfully.

@ StanLee

No, not really. Halo 2 simply popularized on consoles what was ALREADY popular on PC. It was inevitable for consoles to begin getting reliable online multiplayer for shooters, whether Halo existed or not.

Yeah, the effects of COD on the industry has been tremendous, whether you like it or not.

Don't get me wrong Halo is good (and I'm playing through Halo 4 right now, thank you Play.com and your early shipping!) but it just cannot touch the mass appeal and influence of the COD franchise. Nothing even comes close.

Call of Duty has shaped the entertainment industry more than any game before it, and it's influence not just on shooters, but on all genres of gaming is undeniable.

For the worse.

sorry but Call Of Duty shaped this generation of gamer
OneAboveAll  +   196d ago
Ha, no it didn't. It was and forever will be Halo. It even came out before Call of Duty.

Wow, do you think MS HONESTLY believe that
LOGICWINS  +   197d ago
It's called PR. It's not about what you believe, it's what you want OTHERS to believe. If the company I was working for told me I needed to sell a turd snowcone, I'll market that thing as the greatest frozen dessert since ice cream.

No it's Killzone that shaped this gen of gamers lol
HappyTrigger  +   196d ago
I love Killzone as much as the next guy, its graphics are by far one THE best on consoles, uncanny I'd say. But shaping this gen of gamers? Eh, not really.

Halo definitely is one of the most influential console shooters of all time, there's no denying that. Halo 2 was basically responsible for bringing console online multiplayer to the mainstream... However, I have to go with COD when it comes to shaping this generation. Basically every modern FPS nowadays for better or for worse (including Halo 4) has taken elements from COD. When COD4 arrived it was a breath of fresh air to the genre unlike any other fps at the time. However, now it's basically the standard and has led to an endless array of similar fps'.

Man, I miss the arcadey days of Quake where playing online wasn't about realism and just about having a blast laughing at beefy men blowing each other up while making grotesque death screams...

I don't see how anyone can really argue with this. Halo - love it or hate it, you can't deny how influential it has been.
Locksus  +   197d ago
Unfortunately, no. Like many have said before me, it is the CoD franchise that has defined this generation of gamers. For the worse that is.

Pretty much every FPS game takes elements from CoD and we hardly see FPS games that dare to be original and innovative. There are lots of many FPS games that are better than CoD but I wish, let's say, Halo 4 didn't take elements out of CoD, like the killstreak rewards and so on. Now, I haven't tried out Halo 4's multiplayer myself so I don't know if they are balanced or not but Halo's multiplayer was fine the way it was before. I hope these new additions will bring something new to the multiplayer and still make it feel like the old Halos.

LOL in "generation" he means gamers in general who have been gaming around or since the turn of the century. He does not mean it as the current "console generation".

Why are people mentioning CoD and "this gen"?

They are speaking about Halo in general, which started last gen.
KMCROC  +   196d ago
Was thinking how did COD influence halo, halo was released before the first COD. Halo also changed the gaming landscape by introducing online play in consoles. So my point is that halo did more inspiring thing's than COD.
Vanfernal  +   196d ago
Because the "generation" he is talking about is basically the people who started gaming at the 128 bit era... which is the current generation of gamers. So during the 128 era, Halo, even though a really successful series was not something that "defined" that generation, seeing as it was exclusive to a system that did not sell so well in general (24 million systems) and to that point the Halo series sold roughly 15 million copies worldwide. When you compare that to the userbase of the PS2 (150 million systems) Halo was not generation defining up to that point. Besides, the 128 bit generation was defined by a game called Grand Theft Auto III.

So that leaves THIS current gaming generation in which the Xbox userbase is much stronger and yet the Halo series didn't have nearly as much of an impact in the fps genre as COD did.

So that is why the comparisons are coming up. So from all this the only thing I can think of is that Halo defined the Xbox Generation... one which is basically composed by Xbox gamers and disregards the other consoles...
