"Ragnarok Odyssey couldn’t have come at a better time. Fresh from finishing other JRPGs like Eternal Sonata and The World Ends With You, I was hungry for something else. Something different. I was headed on a trip to downtown Chicago for a few days and looked between my 3DS XL and PS Vita trying to decide which to bring between meetings. Then a review code popped into my email for Ragnarok Odyssey, a game I’d been looking forward to since it was released, not just because the Vita is in dire need of more RPGs, but because the game looked like it would bring me yet another unique JRPG experience to add to the other games I’ve been playing recently.
But after playing the game? I should have brought my 3DS."
55/100
More like Phantasy Star clone since Monster Hunter itself IS after all influenced by it.
The thing is, some people go into games with preconceived notions on how the game should function, according to their preferences. I enjoy playing games by the rules that the developers put forth, not by what I think they should have been. There's more variety that way and you don't get stuck playing endless carbon copies or cookie-cutters of the same games.
Hope it's more towards the 9/10 reviews it seems a lot of the negative reviews are because they went into the game thinking it would be something else.
Or maybe it's the whole anti-Vita thing because a lot of people want it to fail for some unknown reason.
I'm I'm an action oriented "in your face" lover, then I'm probably going to shy away from this type of game.
I like to try games before buying them in most cases to kinda "review" it for myself.
It shouldn't be like that though, if you're a reviewer you should look at the game with an open mind and know the genre that you are playing and judge it based on that genre.
If I reviewed a strategy game on the PC say, then I would look at it and think okay so how good is this game as a strategy game, I wouldn't rate it down because I don't enjoy strategy games.
The reviewer is obviously a Nintendo fanboy. The bad points are laughable.
Why not just play a different game on the Vita instead of having to put down your Vita and get a 3DS out because the game was "so bad".
I have seriously lost faith in reviews this gen.
(or an anty-Vita, anty-Sony conspiracy)
There is no story.
Figuring out what materials you need can be a hassle.
Not a ton of weapons / costumes.
Several extra missions are virtually impossible on your own without insane gear.
No real story.
Limited enemy / bosses / area variety.
Enemies seem to lock onto you, making some attacks more hassle than they need to be.
Online discounts for pushing the PS button (never played another Vita game online long enough to push it, so this might be an overall issue), constantly disconnects, no invite system.
Poor dodge system / enemies like to rush you.
It's easy to see where the poor reviews come from, but on the other hand it is also a lot of fun, there are wildly different / weird bosses, great stat system, the ability to play online at all (more than many other games), campaign is roughly 90 quests long, challenge mode, all Japanese DLC was free with the plan to do the same in the US, it's also easy to see how some of these issues were overlooked for more favorable things.
All I can tell you is that it is fun and everything past that is going to be how much or how little minor stuff annoyed the reviewer. Most likely if you want in expecting it to be Monster Hunter or your standard RPG,thats where the negative reviews came from. If you were going in looking to slash some enemies, thats most likely where the positive reviews came from.
It has been awhile but I think this happened to me while playing online for Resistance Burning Skies.
