Windows 8 Better Than Expected, Still Has Monumental Stupidities

Game Informer - The new operating system from Microsoft hasn’t caused my computer to explode, burned my house down, or deleted my save files. In that regard, the reports of the coming PC gaming apocalypse may have been slightly overstated. Heck, Windows 8 even has some nifty new tricks and shortcuts that I am quickly falling in love with. Nonetheless, the new Start screen and the Modern UI are unmitigated disasters that would have me uninstalling in a rage if I hadn’t found workarounds that let me ignore them entirely. (PC)

I almost bought this yesterday but then I found out it doesn't support Office 2003 so I couldn't use my current Outlook client. So I thought no big deal I will just use the Mail app that comes with Windows 8, nope, it doesn't support pop3 mail servers. What??? It's like they assume everyone is using hotmail, gmail, or yahoo mail. Bizarre..
Crazyglues  +   198d ago
Well that's because everyone is using Hotmail (little over 396 million users ), Gmail (425 million users) or Yahoo mail (320 million users).

The real surprise is if your using something else... LoL

I'm running Win8 Enterprise. Also known as Win8 RT and I got mine for free but I love it... I've been converting people over left and right.. (and hooking people up with free copies)

The O.S. is really good it's faster, Start up times... nice. Browser Speed.. amazing

I'm actually Loving this thing and to think I hated it at first, until I got use to it, now I wonder why in the world did I think it would be bad - it's actually pretty awesome..

why did you end your comment with a PS3 logo?
aviator189  +   198d ago
Yeah, I have to agree with you.
I didn't think I'd like windows 8 due to all the negativity and bad press, but, after using it for 2 months now, the majority of that negativity is pretty much gone for me.

It takes the best of Windows 7 and adds in some quirky new stuff with some across-the-board performance enhancements and I'm really loving it so far.

I've only got it installed on one of my pcs at home, but I'll probably just install it on all of them soon.

@ Eamon
I agree with the question but, analysing his text a little... I believe he's got a deeper meaning (symbolism?) that even though you enjoy the PS3 more, it doesn't stop you from enjoying the microsoft side.
Eamon  +   198d ago
No, check his comment history, he ends every comment with the logo.

It's odd.
Psychotica  +   198d ago
It's not really much of a surprise if you have an email history with Outlook and don't want to lose that history. I also try to use similar business software that I use for work.

wtf? use windows live mail 2012 that is free and it fully works with windows 8 it supports POP3
oh and when you read about this was you reading about the office 2013 preview demo?

"Windows 8 Better Than Expected"

Of course it is , people just went on about the stupidest things without even having tried the thing .

At worst it's win 7 with some annoying , for some people , quirks in the design , but with way better performances and and stability .

I dunno how one keeps refusing that over some start menu most savvy users should have gratuated from eons ago , between the numerous ways to shortcut stuff like taskbars.

I have been using various versions of windows 8 for a few months now and for about 2 months ive had the full version on my work laptop and i can say i like it over windows 7 even though my laptop muse pad has not got windows 8 drivers yet once you find out all the keyboard shortcuts it works faster and better than windows 7.

What i found funny with comments about windows 8 was the comments about it beind difficult to use because people had grown up with windows start button. I fund this funny because more and more people are using tablets for home and they managed to figger out how to use them as android and ios is different to windows or the different dashboards microsoft released for the 360 people managed to find out how to use them or going from a normal mobile to a smart phone which is different or from a iphone to a android phone.

Microsoft had to change the way windows worked in terms of the ui for tablets and rather than having a mobile os and a pc os like android and apple they made one that works the same from phone, tablet, pc, laptop, netbook and more.

I think what microsoft have done this year is the start of microsoft becomming the big force they were back in the early 00s but the good this this time is Apple and Google will be there as well and will force them all to not drop the ball and keep us all getting amazing new technology.

People love to argue or its less efficient without a tab , but i dont see it . Full screen instant access to apps and shortcuts , and back and forth between start menu and the desktop and apps , easily trounce the old "start menu > scroll up and down to accessories or subcategory , scroll again , launch apps" process ...

And even if you still dont like it , you can revert back to the old outdated system , while still have a faster and more resilient windows .

Even if you dont like Metro it's a win so far . But to each their own

It's a good OS.
Sure there are some interesting design choices, but in the end it's mostly just a adapting issue.
I do wonder if MS will update the interface later on with a service pack or something?
iJihaD  +   198d ago
i installed windows 8. and you got it all wrong. All this "Metro" Shit, is only the "start" menu redesigned.

Yes, the start menu has been redesigned and it shows as "Metro Menu", where you can open programs from it, install widgets and "some" apps (that works inside it) so on.

Other than that, its a new almost normal windows.

Is it possible to at least restore back to classic Windows taskbar & start menu that we've been using for decades now?

At worst all you have to do is use some registry hack to get back to some normal start menu , at least in appearances
krazykombatant  +   198d ago
The pro version will allow you to go back to the regular desktop mode, once its released.
Series_IIa  +   198d ago
As soon as you buy Start8 or any open source program to bring back the real Start button... It is the best version of Windows I have used.

... Plus its only £25 if you download direct from Microsoft until January.

I dunno if i should be ashamed or not :P, but i really liked the new start menu "metro".

It's really fast, and i can find my application faster than before. "Hitting (windows) key then start typing only first letter or two and pressing enter". (because usually after two letters the app i need is the one got highlighted)

And i like seeing the weather, my mail, tweets and (Reddit app) as soon as i hit windows key. =)

Some good changes here. We need to know how to make them ease our life :P

You are not that alone . I'm not fan at all of the start menu of old . it had its use for its time , but if you are going to end ups with tons of shortcut and submenus to unscroll and scroll over not worth it .

For a long time i've been using taskbars and other stuff instead .

I'm still not using the metro start menu much , but bare some truly bad default choices for the icons , i dont see the big fuss .

You have a full screen menu with everything you need (or if missing that you can add or display further onto it) , without having to scroll through tons of crap .

It would be a prob if it was slow and buggy , but its not , the transition metro > desktop and applications or vice versa is smooth and instantaneous .

Again of course there are odds choices of features icons and apps on the default menu , but you can fix it easily . Once you do you have everything you need at the fingertips , and no it's not even slower without a tablet like some love to claim .

the win key and a go in , launch everything i deem essential , it revert back to the app smoothly . Or win key again and i'm out back to whatever i was doing .

I agree with the assertions of many of my fellow Windows 8 users above; Windows 8 is fantastic. I went into Windows 8 thinking that I would absolutely hate it, but I got Pro for $15, so I figured, "What the hell?"

I spend 98% of my time on the classic desktop, but once I configured Metro to my liking, and learned that the 'Windows' key is now a shortcut back-and-forth to the new Start menu (Metro/Modern), I began to really like it. I barely use it, but I like it.

Start-up times are faster, boot times on applications are faster, I had a couple of driver issues from Windows 7 resolve themselves automatically after upgrading, and I love being rid of Aero.

The only problem I have discovered thus far was a single, solitary website not letting me log in because my Browser/OS combination was "not supported." Simple enough; I ran the browser in compatibility mode temporarily, and presto! I was in the site.

I highly recommend the upgrade guys.

I had a play with it and its pretty good. laptop makes have been adding taskbar menus for ages now like dells popout which got over the issue of having to go through menus and submenus.

Its nice to have a start screen where everything you personally want to access fast is right there for you it speeds things up so much. Looking forward to getting it when i upgrade my laptop.

Looks good from what I've seen. I think the main reason people are hating it is simply put, they haven't played around with it enough to get use to it.

Wow, someone must have dosed me; because, I must be hallucinating to be reading the single most positive MS product article I have ever encountered here on N4G. It`s disconcerting, to say the least. However, I love this alternate universe!
