Super Mario Galaxy Is Now The Highest Rated Game Ever
Super Mario Galaxy for Wii has dethroned The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time to become the best rated game of all-time, according to Game Rankings.
(Super Mario Galaxy, Wii)
On topic. I didn't really enjoy SMG all that much, I liked 64, but never got the praise behind it... Though it would have been better if I didn't have to use the Wiimote, just felt it would have been a super fun game with a basic controller...
I agree, the remote usage was, like with most Wii games, tacked on but, it's telling, even with that awful controller, I still spent more time on Galaxy than any other Wii game. The game is still great, but it just needed to use a standard or Game Cube controller.
Kids these days... I find that funny, I am 24 and have been gaming since I can remember. I loved the old Mario games, and while 64 was fun, I just never understood the supreme hype. But I have never gotten much into the more kid friendly entertainment...
My childhood was spent with The Crow and Vampire Hunter D, which is why I liked Zelda, and Metroid more. darker tone overall...
Don't just assume that anyone who didn't like certain older games is a kid.
*facepalm* SM64 was not the first 3D game. I, Robot from 1984 might have been, but that was in arcades. For PC and consoles, I could say that Quake came out first (a day before, actually), but I won't. :P
Let's see, Ultima Underworld came out in 1992. It used character sprites, but the environments were in 3D. On consoles, Star Fox on SNES was 3D. Again on PC, there was Battlezone, Hovertank 3D/Catacomb 3D by iD...
I know I'm not putting this in chronological order, but there were just so many 3D games before SM64 that I really can't believe you actually said that it was the first. :/
I agree I never understood what was so good about Mario Galaxy, I preferred Mario 64 easily. I also hated using a wiimote as a controller. I hope they go back to the Mario 64/Sunshine style for the next main Mario game, I didn't enjoy walking around planets it made me feel sick lol
I have to agree. I definitely don't think a game with such a flawed camera should have gotten so many perfect scores. I had quite a few cheap deaths because I either couldn't see ahead of Mario or the way the direction was controlled shifted awkwardly.
Nintendo 64 entertainment system exclusive The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time held the title for highest rated gaming experience of all time for nearly two decades. Nintendo set out to beat themselves at their own game by shattering their own expectation and standards with Nintendo Wii entertainment system exclusive Super Mario Galaxy. The leading platformer title of this generation. Now the highest rated gaming experience of all time. Something that each Nintendo supporter should be very proud of. A true trend setter, and leader in the industry today. Critical acclaim, and record setting sales reflect that.
Simple math places the Nintendo product line on a golden platter as they now hold close the top two highest rated games in history. I have beaten Mario Galaxy many times over, and can personally say that it is worth every inch of praise that is has accumulated. One of the most memorable and epic gaming experiences that I have ever had the opportunity to partake in.
Proving to the world one more time that super fancy high resolution visuals are not everything. The most important factor in an awarding gaming experience is fun, and lots of it. Super Mario Galaxy brings fun to the table. Along with near perfect controls, top quality music, and challenging gameplay. Something I hope to see much more of in the future of the forever changing gaming industry.
I can only imagine what the next 3D Mario title will be like on the Wii U Simultaneous 2 player co-op, (player 1 on the Wii U gampad, while player 2 has the tv all to themselves) anyone?
It also has 77 reviews, as opposed to Ocarina of Time's 27. Lol.
I think the difference here is that there is no reason to dislike Super Mario Galaxy. It's a great game, but it's not the best. There is simply no reason to hate it.
It is an amazing game but I don't think it's good enough to beat OoT. Not many games come close to Oot. Looking at the ranking website kind of takes away from the legitimacy of the whole thing since GTAIV is 4th yet it's the worst GTA by far.
I agree;) As a Major Zelda fan Prime 1 is my favorite game of all time with Resident evil 4 a close second. Zelda is by far my favorite series but I've replayed these two games more than any other.
Lately, I've come to realize that aggregate sites like this are an AWFUL way to judge a game. Every critic has their own review scale, their own interpretation of each score , etc. And yet these aggregate review sites operate under the assumption that everyone is on the same page in terms of scores. I have no doubt that Super Mario Galaxy is great, but let's not put too much stock in this news.
I don't think it's the best game ever made, but it definitely deserves to be in the top 10-20.
What's interesting to note though is that SMG's score is based on 77 reviews while OoT is only based on 27 reviews. I'm sure OoT would be much higher if just as many reviews of that game were taken into account.
More reviews don't always help a game. More reviews can mean more chances for the game to get low reviews and lower the average rating. Less reviews is less chances to get high scores and low scores have more effect on the average. They both have bad sides and are pretty much equal.
That is a possibility, but unless the reviews are hypothetical a guesstimate is possible. There are many reviews of OoT which haven't been taken into account, and it's also one of the games most commonly awarded with a perfect score.
It's just a guess, but I do think OoT has enough scores above 97.6% unaccounted for to pull that average slightly higher.
It has a higher score on the meta critic site. It has a 99 on meta critic which makes it the highest on the site. It is the most well received game of all time and it certainly deserves it.
Can you believe I've never played OOT or Super Mario Galaxy? I recently played most games in the Zelda franchise (Majora's Mask is my favorite so far) and have become a HUGE fan and am working my way through OOT. I love it already, so if Super Mario Galaxy surpasses that... I really need to play that as well.
I'm so late to the party! I should have played these amazing games much sooner, I know.
lol, anywho!

And Gamerankings / Metacritic shouldn't really be the source of this type of news.
