XCOM: Enemy Unknown – How to Survive Your First Months: An FTG Guide

FTG writes- For those of you that have picked up XCOM: Enemy Unknown, you may have realized that the game is quite hard and very unforgiving. A mistake as small as positioning your troops wrong or forgetting to put your unit on overwatch can cost you the mission, or even the game. On my first try of XCOM, I barely lased three months before my best soldiers were brutally slaughtered by Chryssalids and a handful of countries decided to withdraw support.

For some games it's best to learn from one's mistakes. It adds replayability and is part of the fun.

Yep I'm just now getting to dig into it after Dishonored and Borderlands 2 addiction but I'm slowly learning from my mistakes.

The non-combat portion takes some trial and error but I'm liking the complexity of it a lot.

Great game so far.

I really could have cared less about the existence of this game. The last time I saw it was i think a video of the FPS version. From then I just said no way to the game. Then all these great reviews come out and i find out it's actually a turn based strategy game. I ran out and bought it and I'm glad I did. It's got to be my favorite game of the year so far, something so refreshing compared to the non-stop FPS barrages we've had. I suggest everyone give this game a shot, you won't be disappointed!

Yeah, the FPS is 2K Marin's game.

As for advice, i'd just say that this game hates you and wants you to fail. If you remember that, you should do ok.

I can see where the confusion could happen. It's not often a title crosses genres in such a short time span like this. Had it not been for my knowledge of past X-Com games I would have assumed the recent FPS was just that..an FPS. It is true that I saw the FPS news online before I heard about the turn based X-Com remake. I almost missed this game because of it.

I'm currently playing this game on classic & ironman mode, and its whooping my behind. The game is still fun though. Definitely got me to become a fan of Xcom, and i look forward to their future installment. so glad i talked my brother into buying this!

XCOM: Enemy Unknown - A Welcome Rebirth

XCOM: Enemy Unknown rebooted the series back in 2012, and has since inspired numerous new strategy game series to be born.

If someone gets into this I'd recommend getting the enemy within version. It's got all the dlc included so it's the better version. Wish the author would've atleast mentioned it. I didn't see it.

Fantastic game though. Xcom 2 is top notch also. I've spent countless hours in these games.

Excellent game.

What other games were inspired by this game?

JL2930178d ago

Gears Of War Tactics, Phoenix Point. Many others.

shinoff2183177d ago

Phoenix point if I remember was created by the original xcom developer or something to that affect. I did try gears tactics some months ago and I just couldn't get into it. It's probably just me

It was, but it was really closer to the newer XCOM than the older ones. Gears Tactics was okay but was hard to get into knowing there probably wont be a sequel.

Ten Best Tactical Mobile Games

There are few things more gratifying in gaming than skillfully turning the tide of a conflict. And few genres provide as many opportunities to abruptly reverse the odds via skill and forethought as tactical strategy. To be sure, we are more often than not talking about turn-based tactical mobile games, specifically titles in line with the iconic landmark series (XCOM and Jagged Alliance) that made the genre a genre.
