RUMOR: Upcoming Firmware Brings Cross-Buy to the PS3

From AnalogHype.com: "Cross-Buy, it's Sony's newest method of benefiting gamers. By purchasing the PS3 copy of a Cross-Buy enabled title, you'll also receive a Vita copy of the game at no extra cost, effectively saving you $40 in most cases. But how exactly does this work? Do you receive a voucher in the packaging, or is this somehow tied to your account? Well it seems like Insomniac Games' James Stevenson has given us our first details about this mysterious program." (PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, PS Vita, PS3, Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time)

Hard to tell

That seems the best way to go about making this cross-buy feature work with retail copies. And make sure Sony doesn't lose money, when they could be gaining it with sales of the Vita copy being sold by them or by an authorized retailer.

I wonder, how will this work with used copies of the PS3 version?

If I had to bet I would go with 'Cross-Buy only on digital purchases'. Everything else doesn't make sense from a company view. If it did some disc verification, everyone could borrow the PS3 version and get the VITA version for free. If they included a voucher people would sell it on ebay, effectively getting the PS3-game cheaper and whoever buys the VITA-voucher also buying a cheaper game, without the publisher making money from it. Even if it is combined in the online-pass, which could very well be, people would sell it on ebay and just buy the pass for 10 bucks in the store. There is no other way for SONY to make sure people don't abuse cross-buy than making it digital purchase only. Another reason is that they want to push digital sales anyway.

While I would love to be wrong and to get a voucher with the ragular disc game I certainly doubt it.

They could tie the code with 1st day dlc or online pass so if you sold the code you'd lose on that on PS3 version
KUV1977  +   641d ago
Yeah as I said, tying it into online pass would be possible, but still everyone without a VITA would sell the code on ebay for 30 to 40 bucks (assuming a full game is 40-50) and buy the online pass for 10 bucks from the store and maybe the DLC later for another 5 or 10 bucks. Even I would do that if I didn't have a VITA. It is a heavy instant rebate. There is no way SONY could work around this, so they will not have vouchers in disc versions. You can disagree with me all you want but I am willing to bet on that, because if I was the company I would do just the same to protect my income.

Isn't it more likely to be a hidden feature of the latest firmware?

Please, how many games are cross buy? Great idea that is rarely used and I don't blame them, they lose money on it.
Xof  +   642d ago
While I'm a big fan of the -concept- of cross-buy, in practice... not so much. Mostly because it all seems to be one way--buy a PS3 game, get a Vita game, rather than the other way around. Meaning the Vita games will -always- be digital.

The whole overpriced proprietary memory format aside, even the 32GB card fills up rather rapidly.

What I would like to get from Sony is:

Buy New PS3 Game Disc Copy Get Digital Copy Free and vice versa Code!

Buy New PS Vita Game Card Copy Get Digital Copy Free and vice versa Code!

But you must see that it is unrealistic thanks to people beeing cheap shots. Everyone would instantly abuse the system and sell the digital copies. That's why there won't even be a physical ps3-copy - digital VITA bundle. It will be digital-digital only, or buy the disc don't get the vita version. If it weren't for pirates we could all always do a full install of every game and would never have to worry about swapping dics, but since people would install games and sell them afterwards no company can really do that unless they go the serial number way. Another reason for publishers to push digital-only and the serial thing. It's annoying but a necessity for business owners.

Can I plz have my money back for the Vita version of Hustle Kings since I owned the console version for months prior? Guess not, but this is still great news. I was wondering why they were milking us 2wice for the same dam game.

You wouldn't be able to pay for the game twice.
The store won't let you.
If you own the console game...then it appears as free in the Vita store. Same as all the other cross buy titles and dlc.

Motorstorm RC
Foosball 2012
Zen Pinball 2 and all dlc
Sound Shapes
Hustle Kings
Top Darts
Wipeout HD/Fury dlc tracks..compatible with Wipeout 2048
Some Pure Chess dlc (games must be purchased seperately)
Little Big Planet dlc.
When vikings Attack (pre-order)

Hustle Kings was announced on the PS Blog as being one of the first titles to support cross-buy.

You are incorrect, sir.

I thought the same thing initially, and there are games in which you are correct, but Hustle Kings was paid for twice. See for yourself. I speak from experience, not from assumption.

Maybe it's been altered?
I first got Hustle Kings on console a long time ago. Maybe 2 years now or something. I got it for Vita for 10 bucks in March. I indeed purchased both.

I got Hustle Kings from the PSN-blackout and had completly forgotten about it until it showed up as free on the VITA. Must have been buggy for you then.

The only beneficial aspect of doing this that I can imagine is for families that share these consoles with one another. Otherwise, if you have both and want to play at home or on the go... buy the 10~20$ cheaper Vita version. Unless you can give the ps3 disk away to a friend... who would still have to pay $10 for the online pass(Much better than full retail, so that would be cool)
timzone  +   642d ago
I would imagine Sony would have a feature where it becomes linked to your account. Otherwise a lot of people will be buying the ps3 copy purely so they could sell it early, keep the vita version and make a few dollars.
DivineAssault  +   642d ago
Damn.. I was hoping for a voucher in the packaging so i can get hooked up at gamestop for free lol.. That wouldnt be right tho cuz whoever buys the display copy will be screwed out of the free game.. Well considering not too many people have the vita, i mightve got away with doing it once or twice or thrice lol
Bowzabub  +   641d ago
All sony has to do is force the user to 1 account and verify that they have a Vita by signing into said account. You're welcome. Now, what fool is going to sell their sign-in information to Peter Weylan on E-bay. No one.
