The 30th Annual Golden Joysticks were held today. Game developers, PR and journalists got scrubbed up and gathered in a swanky London venue to find out which games were voted the best by 4 million gamers.
The winners of the Golden Joystick awards, all in one place.
Baldur's Gate 3 has had multiple wins at the Golden Joystick Awards 2023, but Larian Studios' CEO didn't see any of it coming.
The award ceremony of the Golden Joystick Awards has just concluded, and the winners have been announced.

I think not
Audio and Visual Design of course.
Best Storytelling...no
Best Studio (after the whole crunch thing which resulted in a fair few leaving)...no
GOTY...no
What a joke, there was a bunch of games this year more deserving.
(cue the hostile comments)
@foxtrot....."It's one of the greatest games in the history of mankind" 😁..... I'll quote what I said before again----
"the facts are undeniable there isn't a game in History with the level of attention to detail, butter smooth transitional animations in character movement and overall graphical fidelity that comes close to TLOU part 2...
The narrative is subjective and divisive, but what many don't understand is that this is EXACTLY what the writers intended. So for people like you who spew Hatred because you dislike and disagree with one aspect of the game's narrative and completely ignore everything else it does at a Pristine level, I'm afraid is shallow minded."
Unfortunately for you I'm afraid those awards are gonna keep coming... 😁
@TripleAAARating
“It's one of the greatest games in the history of mankind"
Dude saying that kind of stuff sounds like you’re in a cult, it’s over the top either way.
You’re just one of these people who try and defend the below average story by saying “that’s what they intended all along” and “it’s supposed to make you feel like that”. Next you’ll be telling us how “our IQ’s are not high enough to understand the rich complexity of an masterfully told deep story”...
You want to praise the graphics, of course
Visuals? Definitely
Audio & Soundtrack? Damn right
However Story, Narrative, Studio, GOTY...I don’t think so, other games deserve them better.
@foxtrot ...... "Next you’ll be telling us how “our IQ’s are not high enough to understand the rich complexity of an masterfully told deep story”...
You said it not me 😁... you couldn't have state it better, this quote perfectly outlined the conundrum you personally are faced with this game... man it's been MONTHS you've been spewing hate toward TLOU 2, without adequately stating exactly WHY you hate the narrative so much..
I'll make it easy for you, please name a game that is eligible within this years GOTY contenders that you think is more deserving...
@tripleAAA, so ur telling me that they wrote a story that they knew a decent portion of the playerbase wouldnt like, since it was divisive on purpose? you talk about them like they are some godlike entity beyond the comprehension of mere mortals and ND tasked you as a disciple to spread the word of their greatness.
Now the ultimate question for you: would you let yourself be crucified for them?
@TripleAAARating
"without adequately stating exactly WHY you hate the narrative so much.."
ARE YOU JOKING ME?
I've said it TONS of time at release, I could give you a whole little essay breaking down why I didn't like it, hell I'm pretty sure I did on here yet all I get in response is people ignoring what I've said and dumbing it down to "bu bu but you're just saying that because Joel died" while everything else in the comment is thrown away. Either that or something about being sexist, hating strong women or some other excuse.
I don't keep saying it on here because if I or anyone else did you'd get comments directed at me saying "You keep repeating yourself on everypost" and people like yourself would just gloss over it and would say I'm still "hating" on it for "no reason".
So really...what's the point
Since it would be pointless to ramble on for that long, he's some fun memes to get a few of the points across...

I love that Foxtrot is still so upset his computer Dad died.
Well deserved Naughty Dog.
@Bathyj
You’ve just proved my point from above and at the current time of writing it’s only been 30 minutes.
Thank you
"so ur telling me that they wrote a story that they knew a decent portion of the playerbase wouldnt like, since it was divisive on purpose?"
Yes. There was a quote I heard earlier this year. I don't remember it exactly and I think it was in relation to the design of something, but it was something like they would rather people love it or hate it rather than be bored or not care. At least they felt something.
Tsushima is the goty.. Unmatched artistic style, combat and sound.. A true Swan song to conclude a total dominance
Fox
I don't see you talk about the crunch culture at Rockstar and CDRedProject
But that because you are hypcrite
You cry so much i kinda feel sorry for you ... but you know what i love your tears
keep going
That's classical foxtrot. Dude is full of passive aggressiveness with his black-and-white opinions. If you disagree with him your comment is a "joke". His maturity level never seize to amaze me.
TLOU2 is more than deserving to win GOTY. There is a lot going for it. Sure feel free to disagree but it should be pretty obvious why many won't. Your argument for "best storytelling" is "No". I disagree as I cannot think of any other game that did story telling so well. You do realize that "plot" is different than "storytelling", right? And if one thinks that TLOU2 has an amazing storytelling then it's pretty hard NOT to give GOTY to this game: best visuals, best audio, best(or among best) storytelling --> that kinda leads into GOTY. And if your game is the ultimate game of the year then the "Studio of the year" is a no-brainer as well.
@ foxtrot
If you played the game you would know those memes you posted are silly.
*spoiler alert*
First meme. I’ll admit it was awkward watching that scene. Mainly because as the player controlling Abby its natural to try and relate to the character. But being a straight male I could not relate to that scene (as Abby). However, I am aware that the awkwardness derives from my own preferences and am able to detach myself from the character. Could they have omitted the scene? Sure. Could the same context been conveyed with a kiss instead? Sure. But I’m not going to let an “unnecessary” sex scene be the be all end all for judging a game. Do you think Witcher 3 is a bad game because of an “unnecessary” sex scene?
Second meme. Comparing the cautious nature of a lone 14 year old girl, that’s actively being targeted, in the company of a grown man she doesn’t know is fundamentally different than two grown men being friendly towards a girl they just saved. Ellie’s relationship with Joel has changed him. He probably seen a helpless girl (in his eyes) and introduced himself to show he is not a threat.
Third meme. Ellie wasn’t upset at Joel for saving her and keeping it from her. She made it abundantly clear she was upset because he made the choice for her. She also felt curing the infection would have given her life meaning, something he took away (remember Ellie was a 14 year old girl that just lost her best friend to the infection). She ultimately forgave him but wasn’t able to express that to him. And Ellie did not forgive Abby. The reason she didn’t kill Abby (and vice versa) was for her own sake and sanity. It was the closure she needed to be at peace with herself and forgive herself for how she treated Joel, as well as move on with her life (which is what Joel and Dina wanted). People who haven’t played the game or don’t understand the game think it’s a tale of revenge, but it’s more a tale of closure and redemption for both characters.
...well deserved indeed. Congrats naughty dog for making this game, really a gem this generation. Now waiting game for part 3 to be released on ps5. I hope soon, maybe 2-3 years please?
I’m sure most would disagree but I found the story better than in the first game.
My favorite game this entire gen.
Never has any other entertainment medium made so emotionally invested in it's world and characters. It still makes me emotional thinking about it.
Naughty Dog with U4, U Lost legacy and TLoU2 are untouchable.
Best devs in the industry.
Interestingly enough you mention the most divisive naughty dog games within their canvases.
Unlike the unanimous acclaim for tlou1 and uncharted 2
I named NDs most recent titles which happen to be the ones I liked the most.
All ND games since ps2 have been critically acclaimed.
So, TLOU cleaned the house. Amazing
Looks like another 200 GOTY awards club. :D
I would have given ghost of Tuishima PS game of the year imo. Ori and the Will of the Wisps is the best Xbox game and its not even an exclusive
24 likes and 11 dislikes on this comment? Spam bots incoming from angry TheQuartering fans. It's happened a few times this week alone. They can't stand the fact that most people liked TLOU2.
@Ouchiemdais
Your account was made just 39 min ago. You are the pathetic loser - stop using spam bots and making fake accounts.
As I predicted when you had 24 likes and 11 dislikes, it wasn't going to be long before someone got offended by the majority being positive about TLOU2 and used spam bots. Complete losers.
With the surge of likes that Foxtrot got out of nowhere ....
Ultimate whinging moany faced tw@t of the year -Foxtrot.
Congrats mate. Now let's get you some more butt hurt. ,🖕
Awww the little princess is trying to be big and tough on the mean internet, that’s adorable
Why don’t you put your bottle down and take five before you cut yourself on all that edge
💅🏼
Well sometimes people like you need it.
You moan non stop about this game, time to get over it m8 it's game of the year and there nothing you can do about it.
Maybe my comments were a little harsh and I apologise, but man your a moaner.
Go do something you like, it's obviously not gaming.
And I'm not trying to be big and tough I am BIG and Tough. And it's not a bottle it's a large can of whoopass, come get some 😘
TLOU2 swept like it deserves. The ironic thing is that these were user voted. That loud minority of haters can go cry in the corner.
Me too, I bet Joel Miller is on the list thousands of times and we all know he's not eligible to vote anymore.
Stop the steal, right?
Just in case it's necessary... /S
@mac
Not sure it's a steal. But it would be good to see. Nothing wrong with transparency I think.
Especially for something so legitimate, right?
TheQuartering fans: "Damn. It's a shame we didn't hear about those awards. We would have made thousands of accounts like we did on Metacritic because we have nothing better to do with our lives."
Yeah that is the funny thing about it
It was gamers who vote it as game of the year ... which show how pathetic the trolls are who think they represent the gamers
This studio made Transistor which is also a very good game. Ill be grabbing this as soon as it gets released on console. The moment I saw footage of this I knew it was by the same studio without looking because of the similarities
The Last of Us 2 is going to take away a lot of potential awards Ghost would have won any other year. Ghost is a runner-up in just about every category IMO.
I actual tried to play Ghost of Tsushima for a little bit while playing TLOU2 and just couldn't. TLOU2 just ruined me for the level of detail in absolutely everything in the game and when I saw my characters foot in Ghost of Tsushima step through a body on the floor or some stairs I was like.. nope. Also i didn't feel the weight of attacks like I felt when I swung a weapon in TLOU2. I only finished TLOU2 the other week so I really hope I can get into Ghost of Tsushima since it just looks like a game that's right up my alley.
Its very difficult playing any other game after playing The last of us 2. The quality of the game is generations ahead.
Truth be told even launch PS5 games can't match the animation and facial animations in The last of us 2.
Just give us TLOU2 60fps PS5 pacth Sony!
I know, it makes no sense, you have...
Best PlayStation Game: TLOU2
GOTY: TLOU2
You’re telling me they couldn’t have given Best PlayStation Game to Miles Morales, Ghost of Tsushima or FFVII
Then Suckerpunch / Supergiant loosing Best Studio to NaughtDog after the horrible crunch and working conditions staff went through that resulted in people getting sick or leaving. They lost a fair few people.
That’s so off...
🤦♂️
You make no sense.
No, because TLoU2 deserves it more than any other game. Even if you hate the story you're still left with amazing animations, sound, graphics and gameplay.
All studios in the industry experience crunch. Infact almost all industries have to put in crunch to meet deadlines.
Do you even work?
You're so off...
Dude, you're so petty when it comes to TLOU2. And when it comes to working conditions, you don't exactly seem to care about all the death threats that Naughty Dog staff received from lunatics going after the game and their followers. I'd say all that nonsense made them feel pretty sick.
@Atticus_finch
Not really. Doom Eternal, FFVII, Ghosts of Tsushima, Hades, even Animal Crossing or Crash Bandicoot 4 for example got better fan. AND critic responses
“Even if you hate the story you're still left with amazing animations, sound, graphics and gameplay”
DUDE. Come on man, it’s a story driven game where the narrative is the main attraction like most of ND games over the years and especially after how amazing the first game was story wise. If it’s not up to scratch then I’m sorry but even if I praise the other things which I can it doesn’t mean I can skip over the big main attraction which has failed. It doesn’t work like that.
“All studios in the industry experience crunch”
Did you even read the report? Like seriously, it’s the worst one that’s been reported on this year, it’s disgusting what they did. If they did that at my job I’d be onto the union or I’d walk out, not worth my mental health.
@LucasRuinedChildhood
Death Threats I’m not okay with but here’s the thing, it’s the internet, EVERYONE from celebs, actors and the like get sick abuse off people all the time, it’s shit but it happens. However you just ignore it and get on with your life.
The issue here though is that it seems Neil has a habit of making it known, drawing attention to it, so he can deflect any criticism of the game by making it look like every person who dislikes the game is just like the trolls sending death threats. He brings it up, his white knights rally around him and go off defending the game calling anyone even those with legit criticisms who’s stating them in a fair mature manner, a troll just like those sending death threats. It’s very tactical.
It’s a good game but not TLOU 2 level. Hell, it’s not even the best open world game this year.
@gold i disagree. Ghost of Tsushima is the most immersive open world. Graphics and animations are better at naughty dog but I easily enjoyed ghost far more
Naughty Dog, The last if us 2 & Sony swept all the awards. Next year there's some tough competition with cyberpunk starfield God of war 2
Speaking of tears, someone has used spam bots again to spam dislikes at anyone who had a positive comment about TLOU2. The first comment was at 24 likes and 11 dislikes and now look at it a short time later. These guys better get used to TLOU2 getting awards or they're going to have a very hard time over the next few weeks. haha.
@Lucas
What makes you think it's fraud?
Couldn't be because there was a clear difference could it? Lol
Gotta say I agree. Was surprised to see it switch. Either there are lots of bots out there or lots of silent folk.
Similar to the movie awards. Most of it is a joke. Tlou2 divided the fan base and still won game of the year. Wanna know why?
Demonize the detractors and call them all sorts of terrible names in order to ignore that they exist. Therefore you now have a flawless game with no issues.
Literally no one claims the game has no flaws.
TLoU2 won
Wanna know why?
It was literally voted in by fans.
No conspiracy theories needed.
More like the detractors playing the victim and throwing the toy out of the pram when they don't get your way. You can make thousands of accounts and spam huge amounts of negative reviews on Metacritic, use spam bots on N4G, etc but no one is falling for the narrative.
A "detractor" here has used spam bots in the comments section. It seems like the detractors really want people to know they exist. It's like a cry for help. haha
@Lucas
Oh wow now this is actually funny.
You claiming Im using both accounts or something?
Well...nope. I wonder who is though? @atticus said something about conspiracy theories mayhaps that goes both ways.
Face it son tlou 2 is going to win over 200 gotys and no matter how much you cry and pussy bleed it's not going to make a difference if gta v couldn't stop tlou 1 I doubt any game released this year can stop tlou 2.
No worry here, TLOU 2 can get all the glory like the high critic review scores, but nobody is buying, in fact, Sony's never updated the sales number, stock piled in store says all.
Besides, US people, their president says all.
CKPan
You F idiot ...those awards are voted by fans not critics
What a fool 😂😂😂
Really pleased at most of these awards as they line up pretty well with my own opinions.
I adored everything about The Last of Us 2, no other game has had me so emotionally engaged, the amount of times I sat slack-jawed at another turn in the story was bonkers.
Great to see Hades getting some love too, what a belting game. It's a shame Tsushima got overlooked however, I do think TLoU2 was more deserving in most categories.
Damn Sony sweeped the ceremony with 8 awards! Yes, I counted Death Stranding too because it's Sony's IP.
I'll jam to this to celebrate lol:
https://m.youtube.com/watch...
Just wait until Naughty dogs drops that Multiplayer on Ps5. I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it.
I just hope it's not some battle royal type BS. I want some Factions, and I hope they have a hoard mode or some kind of co op mode where we hunt down some infected.
That would actually get me back into the game.
Tlou1 had great multiplayer.
They're taking their sweet time with it so it must be big.
"The Golden Joystick Awards, also known as the People's Gaming Awards, is a video game award ceremony; it awards the best video games of the year, as voted for originally by the British general public,"
Are we surprised by the winners?
The equivalent in movies would mean that Disney would be guaranteed to win with a Marvel movie
it would win automatically best visual, best story, best FX, best studio, and ultimate movie of the year.
At least this award proves what Jim Ryan is saying it's risky to create a new AAA IP.
I guess us Brits just aren't as smart or choosy as our American cousins 🙄
I would expect the same to happen everywhere
Sony like Nintendo has a devoted fan base Just like how everybody love Kojima in the gaming industry.
Sony know how to create hype and how to market a product.
So it's just logical that PPL would vote for something they know and love in contrast to a game like Hades.
Best Visual Design should have been awarded to Ghost of Tsushima. It hasn't received any awards sadly.
people can talk all the smack they want but play the last of us 2 from start to finish and tell me why that isn't one of the best games ever created up to this date and the best game this year. it makes you feel so many unique emotions that no game has ever made you feel. superb acting by ALL the characters and jesus the gameplay was so much better than the first in every aspect.
point is, people hate tlou2 because most people are sheep and the trend was to hate on it. I know two friends irl that say they hate it and have never played it just because they know the spoiler that everyone hates on the game for
BUT what naughty did was follow exactly on the ending of the first the last of us and that's why it's an amazing story. what did we do at the end of the first game? murder some innocent people for our own sake and lie to ellie on her face. I knew both things would have HUGE consequences and they did but haters say it's bad story telling even tho naughty give you every detail of the story from each perspective with again, a better game in every aspect than the first the last of us.
Unfortunately the only emotion I got was ...wtf. and then some....is this a dating show?
Tlou1 got lots of awesome things going..but for me this second entry just wasn't very interesting.
Ellie is no longer a likeable badass and all other previous characters are a shadow of their former self's ...if this was all intentional then great but...the franchise is now dead in the water.
Imagine if Nathan drake was removed from uncharted 2 and you only played as chloe...nuff said. Not exactly the same but did have the same overall effect for me.
so because there's relationships involved in the game, it's a dating show. nobody has the right to date and fall in love in a post apocalyptic world, huh? they explore themes of relationship in the first game's DLC and you say that game is awesome but this one is boring? you probably never played the game and watched it on stream. if I'm wrong I'll apologize but add me on ps4 and let me see your trophies.
wasn't very interesting, really? within the first two hours there's a moment that literally broke the internet and sets you on a very determined goal. we dont know who those people are or why she did that. how tf was finding all of that out that not interesting?
this is my favorite one "ellie is no longer a badass" O.o SPOILERS AHEAD, WARNING FOR ANYONE THAT HASN'T FINISHED THE LAST OF US PART 2............................. .................
the torture scene with Noah. she literally tortured Noah to the point that she went from "I'll never rat on my friend" to telling Ellie every single aspect to where Abby was at the time.
dude there's so many scenes I can think of Ellie being a straight badass.. did you really play the game? cause if you dont think the part where ellie is hanging upside down and she tricks the two saddists on California wasn't a badass moment, jesus dont want to know your humor.
Okay your final paragraph says imagine playing as chloe on UC2 for the whole game...
..... Lost Legacy did that and that was a great Uncharted game. definitely not Uncharted 2 but a very strong standalone spinoff from the UC universe. now... how does your example apply in the last of us 2? we play as the villain only midway through the game and it happens in a scene that there's SO MUCH HAPPENING AT ONCE and I understand if you dislike abby's character. I did at first too, but then you're seeing this group of friends fight a group of Christian lunatics that are even harder than hordes of clickers. and then you're helping these two kids out as all of your friends die one by one by ellie's hand and you start to wonder, are we doing the right thing as ellie? then abby's leader betrays her and you're not only running from ellie and killing delusional fanatics, now you're also killing your ex-comrades... if you didn't like abby's character after all the shit we went through you just don't understand that she was the first to lose what was most valuable to her. she lost what we save at the end of the first game and she made a mistake, that led to ellie making all the decisions she made. that's why naughty dog made sure we saw both point of views but apparently people didnt care for the amazing story and focused on stupid shit like there being relationships in the game.
I really wonder how people expects a happily ever after story from a game based on a rash apocalyptic cruel world.
TLOU2 is true to its setting, realistic as f**k, any one can die anytime. Its the world Ellie and Joel lives in.
The Last Of Us 2 is my Game of The Year. With Ghost OF Tsushima in 2nd.
I honestly don't understand all the haters. I don't even like to argue with them. I just know how amazing the game is and it deserves every award it gets. I'm also Right-Leaning politically, not that it matters, but the game is not 'woke' as they say. The creative process was organic from it's inception. Amazing story. Amazing characters. Amazing visuals. Amazing everything. I'll never forget the experience.
Love naughty dog & I loved TLoU2 but my personal goty & studio of the year are Ghost of Tsushima & Sucker Punch.
Anyway congrats Naughty Dog.
Absolutely is, it's incredibly layered. If you actually play it through, and pay attention. That's a lot to ask for most people apparently. There are reasons for every choice each character makes throughout the story. And they're clearly presented if you pay attention.
It's hilarious to see all the haters like Foxtrot using alt accounts to downvote while they cry. You aren't fooling anyone, TLOU2 is dominating both with critics and fan awards, enjoy.
I doubt foxtrot uses alt accounts to do something that petty. He doesn't have a good opinion of the game, but I think he's a mature enough not to waste time doing that.
This place has become cult like. It reminds me of Twitter. "You better like what I like or we'll shun you"
"Best Gaming Hardware - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080" - in the year where new consoles were launched...
I'm sure Ghost of Tsushima will win something at The Game Awards chill out for those who rooted GoT and hated and crucify people who liked or loved TLOU II.
Disagrees showed there are many hurt and annoyed people that their favorite game don't win GOTY for this event.
IMO TLOU2 is the equivalent to a movie oscar bait. Just basic shit that floats on the surface that pretends to be deeper than it is. Easy pick for people who don’t know better.
Not bad but it is just an awards show.
My GOTY was different but TLOU2 deserves credit.

...cant forget how awesome the facial animations of this game (cutscenes and gameplay), heck even the to be release cyberpunk game facial animations feels a lil bit robotic to me.
TLOU2 is great on visuals and sound. The writing is good but I don't think it should gave won there nor on the storytelling. I love playing as both Ellie and Abby but the story is what was the biggest let down of the game.
So GOTY contender, no doubt, but I would give GOTY to either FFVII remake, Ghost of Tsushima, Hades, and wait for it..............ORi and the will of the wisps
Ghost of Tushima should've won best visual design imo. TLOU2 did deserve best story telling.
A crapy story can be controversial. Still crapy crap that crap of a crap that is TLoU II.
Amazing. A great game, amazing experience. Naught dog are really the top dog of the industry. What they were able to do with a ps4 is really amazing. Really pumped to see what they can do with the ps5
I'm torn on this one. I did like The Last of Us 2 a lot, but I don't think it's game of the year good. There is undeniable quality that went into the production of this game and I like the fact that ND was willing to take risks with the plot. However, the story tried to dictate how I should feel and that's just lazy writing no matter how you look at it.
Druckman was also insufferable in interviews, defending the sycophants who were calling him the Spielberg of Game design (I would call him an Abrams on his best day). This game was good but not genius. A genius game wouldn't force the player to play through a scripted ending. A genius game would let the player decide the outcome. Imagine how amazing the ending of this game would be if we were actually allowed to chose it ourselves. It wouldn't feel artificial or forced.
On the other hand, every good game has its flaws this year. Ghost was gorgeous but the pacing and gameplay had some problems. VII Remake had that god awful ending. Xbox didn't bother to release anything of note. I guess with that in mind, TLOU2 deserves to be on top this year. It does feel like a 2020 hit, bleak, depressing, and straight up not fun at times.
My golden award goes to Ghost of Tsushima and voice acting to Akio Otsuka (Shimura-sama).
would have preferred ghost of tsushima winning goty or maybe ff7 remake. not a big deal either way
Awww man the salt in this thread. Incredible that haters (Fox) who hate this game devote so much energy when there is an article about it. Looking forward to Dec 12 lmao.
GR:
From Best Audio to the Ultimate Game of the Year itself, millions of people participated in The Golden Joysticks Awards online voting to show some love to their favourite titles of the last 12 months, and we've got the final results listed right here. Read on below for the full breakdown of winners, and see where your top picks of the year ended up.
Yeah I'm pretty sure Resident Evil 2 will be the overall GOTY this year. It already has 2 of them.
Death stranding is the gonna win a lot. It’s my game of the year, followed by re2.
YES
Well deserved, they really need to continue with this and how they approached it.
Epic? Really
Yeah that was one of the worst choices they could make. Like how is it not Capcom who had RE2, DMC5, Monster Hunter World Iceborne etc.
Regardless of how anyone feels about Fortnite, it's downright ignorant not to see how much effort Epic put into the game over the last 2 years. They consistently update it and keep it rewarding and fresh for its fan base. Best developer of the year? Maybe not my choice but don't all holier than thou over it
I'd actually agree with Justin and say Capcom had a storming year
This is actually a really good model for re-makes going forward. RE2 set the bar for re-makes and I hope that pubishers look at their older IPs and do more of this with them. There are a lot of games that I would like to see from the past re-built from the ground up in future generations using all the capabilities of the generation to modernize them.
Agreed but I'd love an old school run mode with damage turned the right up that gives you the option to pop zombie heads the entire way through.
The changes to re made it feel more about resource control and less about horror which is fine but an additional mode just for fun would have been great
I agree, they released two of the best and most well recieved games this year. Epic has done nothing but Fortnite updates and threw money at companies to get timed exclusives for their rubbish store.
Best story telling Days Gone is deserved in my opinion. But Resident Evil 2 earned it imo great game.
Meh, I'm not into resident evil or horror games. But good for the fans, I've heard nothing but good things about it.
The awards became irrelevant the moment DMC5 was omitted. Apex being included was just more poop on the shitfest.
A hack and slash, an old school hack and slash won't win goty. A game like dmc requires multiple playthroughs to experience the depth of it's combo system, I put over 1000 hours into the steam dmc4, comparing my first playthrough to now is night and day.
Sadly, we have only regressed from old school. There still isn't a game that can beat DMC in terms of depth in combat.
I agree sekiro was downright amazing.... Feels like for some reason from software games don't get much love at awards shows... Imo they have the best soundtrack in every game. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Definitely has the best soundtrack, Sekiro was my favourite this year, FromSoftware made that combat feel so incredibly satisfying, along with a focused narrative and visual design that fit so well.
Games with higher difficulty levels are often classed as niche and ignored for awards
Not sure, but I'm having a hard time coming up with contenders, much less ones that had a better story.
Might be different if it was about the generation instead of the year
@rainslacker
Not necessarily knocking Days Gone but Metro Exodus, Control, Gears 5, and Katana Zero are all stories I would put above Days Gone this year.
Can't agree with Control. Decent game, and story wasn't terrible, but it lacked some depth. Gears 5 I can't say for sure, but I've heard mixed feelings about the story, and I'm not talking about just the dissent that comes from console war talk, but actual people I know that discuss it. Won't put it down, but the talk makes me see why it may not be a contender, much less better than DG. Can't speak to the others as I haven't played them. I didn't mean to imply that there weren't better stories out there, just that I really couldn't think of any, which means that since I thought DG was the best I could think of, that it probably had a place in the running.
@StormLegend
yeah it was awsum ...tho i waited updates since it was released so i could plat it :P
Glad that Days Gone gets the recognition it deserves. Really an excellent story! One of my goty.
Also how did Days Gone get best story above Sekiro? Sekiro's story was just lovely. Days Gone was okay, not bad, not great.
Sekiro story wasn’t even that good the gameplay and level design carries that game all day every day. Days gone def deserved the win it really did have a great story
Congrats to RE2, well deserved!
Happy to see Days Gone getting some love, I loved the story, can’t wait for the 2nd one.
Best Indie Game - Outer Wilds. Oh yeah! I haven’t finished it yet but after 20 minutes I went “Wow!”
Also can someone tell me why awards aren’t held around mid-Feb?
With games releasing all throughout the year as opposed to just the holiday season as it was in the past not sure that it matters anymore.
The holiday releases are normally the annualised releases call of duty EA shooter number 5041 and more
True, but:
OCD-wise everything matters ;)
Also makes sense that it’s related to marketing like @SickSinceSix Says
Probably a marketing thing, get people to buy the award winning games as Xmas gifts or something
I consider it the joke games of the year awards
ever since they gave fortnite goty in 2018
I don't understand how best Saber won VR goty when so many other great VR games launched like blood and truth
YES, Some love for Devil May Cry V ^_^
Hope we will get a sequel, like in less than 10 years :')
No complaints about RE2, there is so many great single player games to pick from this year for GOTY
So happy for Days Gone receiving so much credit. RE2 is one of the best remakes I have played. They deserve bit and I hope they do the same with RE3.
Days Gone shouldnt have won anything tbh, and fortnite beating smash for best competitive game is ridiculous
Ok, I don't think this is a bad list at all. REmake2 isn't a bad choice for GotY. I'm sad that games like The House in Fata Morgana and AI: The Somnium Files flew under the radar for Gamesradar, but at least the game they picked is a pretty great one.
It's really unfair Star Wars apparently missed the cutoff date, as it deserved to have won some awards. Sadly if they include it in next years awards, there are way to many Juggernauts in it's way for it to win anything.
