Digital Extremes, Silicon Knights receive $1 million grant for prototypes

The Ontario Media Development Corporation has granted $1 million to two Ontario game developers, Digital Extremes and Silicon Knights, to create video games prototypes. The developers will use the prototypes to market their concepts and ideas to potential publishers.

Digital Extremes' prototype is a third-person action game with an old school horror theme. Target platforms include Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Silicon Knights' prototype is a third-person action psychological thriller. Target platforms include all next-generation systems.

The story is too old to be commented.

It's awesome that Ontario gives tax breaks and funds to game studios, I hope it catches on in more places. I think France did the same thing for Ubisoft.

Eternal Darkness 2 by Silicon Knights... it has to be!

Another Eternal Darkness-esque game would be pretty sweet, no?

Edit: Damnit, Bad Taste beat me to it. Stupid login.

It's cool that the Ontario Government is deciding to give these grants, but at the same time, not. I am from Waterloo, Ontario, and it is pretty much known as a high-tech industry zone. Digital Extremes is located in London, which is about 45 minutes away, and Silicon Knights is located in St. Catherines, which is probably around 30 minutes away. The towns are located really close to eachother.

I remember when the original Unreal came out, and there was a big article in the paper about Digital Extremes in the local business profiles. I think I may still have it stashed somewhere in my boxes at my parent's house.

I think we'll be seeing more and more prolific companies coming from South Western Ontario, not just high-tech industry companies like RIM (BlackBerry) or Maple (Maple V software), but more software related companies that'll make it big if they Ontario government helps out a little.

Aye, I live about 15 minutes away from the Digital Extremes studio here in London, have to say, small city pumping out big games, very impressive.
