Wii U’s Online Strategy is a Double-Edged Sword

GenGAME writes: "Let’s cut right to the chase: I think that Nintendo’s strategy with Miiverse and their strategy with Nintendo Network are one and the same. And I mean that quite literally – Miiverse itself is their unified online system within Nintendo Network. If you’re waiting for Nintendo to “reveal their online system,” you missed the boat back at E3." (Miiverse, Nintendo, Wii U)

If Miiverse really is the bulk of Nintendo's unified online account platform, I'm not quite sure how I feel about Nintendo's big online effort. On the one hand, I think that if Nintendo can get a lot of active Miiverse users and integrates things like online matchmaking, leaderboards, and so on well enough, plus build up a big audience for Wii U in general, I think it's got potential to become one of the biggest online platforms out there.

But if they leave out too many pieces from the unified system, I think people might decide to keep their online gaming elsewhere.

Miiverse being the main part of online just proves wii and nintendo consoles is still aimed at younger audiences in my mind. Older audiences dont really care about mii's and that stuff. They want hardcore games and real looking graphics.

Im glad to say im 29 and happy to tell you that you are wrong. IT MAY NOT APPEAL to teenagers like you seem to be. Ive been playing videogames my entire life and i see the logic behind the miis in miiverse… They are trying to create something akin to the mIRC which was very popular in the 90's and adding avatars that represent your digital self makes it intuitive for NON gamers to connect and enjoy the online experience as much as we gamers do.

While i appreciate CORE games (im not using hardcore since i find the term STUPID and OVERUSED) having nice graphics, i realized that real looking graphics are not what draws my attention… but THE EXPERIENCE it provides… Most people figured this once again when skyward sword released… I dropped my ps3 and started playing for 7 days straight until i beat it… Which is more than I can say from most ps3 games (and i have ove r 40 ps3 games at that, exceptions being metal gear, god of war and uncharted which provided an awesome experience).

Im anxiously waiting for miiverse, and see how nintendo manages the online front this time around! :D

Isnt it a bit late to have to speculate on how its online will be? I think nintendo shouldve been bragging about how much more advanced its network would be compared to previous attempts.. I guess in a few more weeks, ppl will find out first hand how good it is.. I hope they are happy with it & dont get burned by em.. If its a lot better, thats awesome & a bigger incentive for me to buy it but them being so hush hush about it makes me wonder what theyre trying to pull.. Nx gen is going to take networking to a whole new level & if this is still behind current w bare bones functionality,no1 will jump ship for this..

The wii u doesnt even have an advanced sensor bar for tracking movement.. Look at skyward sword (best motion plus game to me) & how many times u have to recalibrate it.. Do ppl want to go through that same thing? Motion sensors are far more advanced these days but i guess they needed to keep costs down..

Its irrelevant anyway.. As long as nintendo does their magic with software that includes online play, wii u will do its job.. Im not expecting this to be my primary console anyway.. Just cant wait for smash bros, mario kart, zelda, & metroid to be in HD with new gameplay elements..

" The wii u doesnt even have an advanced sensor bar for tracking movement.. Look at skyward sword (best motion plus game to me) & how many times u have to recalibrate it"

The " sensor " bar only emits infrared light for the infrared camera. Not sure what this " advanced " sensor bar is suppose to do.

I didn't had the re-calibration issue because pointing at the sensor bar told the game how i'm holding the wii-mote and corrects the offset.
Your motion+ must probably just be jagged.

As for online, from what I understood was that it's up to the developers on how they implement online play. Connecting it to Mii-verse is an option.

I feel as if we learned too much about the Wii U extremely too late?
