The Transgender Birdo Jokes Need to Stop, Guys

The problem with mocking the fact that Birdo “thinks he’s a girl” is that there’s a segment of the population who has that exact issue. Only it’s less “think” and more “trying frantically to feel comfortable in their own body and not hate themselves when they look in a mirror.” Every time you make a joke about Birdo “being a dude,” you make it that much harder for those people. They’re real human beings, who deserve real love and real support, not an eternal existence as the punchline of bad gaming comedy. (Culture, Nintendo, Retro)

I don't even... I mean... why was this written?
DragonKnight  +   990d ago
Same concept as gaymercon and sexism.
Christopher  +   990d ago
Yes. Same concept. A fictitious creature that has a joke tied to it that rarely even gets brought up is the exact same as people being treated differently in real life for their sexual choice.

Just FYI, /s

You can be sarcastic all you want to, but the same kind of people that make articles about gay gamers and sexism in gaming make articles like this. Sure, this one is a tad much, but the rules aren't different. You disagree with this article because of a rarely used joke based on a fictitious character, but somewhere out there is someone who is offended by it. What are you going to say to them? That they need to get over it? That'd be hypocritical of you considering your stance on gaymercon don't you think?

It's the exact same thing. This person took the white knight thing and ran with it. Just like you did with gaymercon. The only difference is in method.

Yeah, gaymercon is another unnecessary diving thing, we don't have straightocon we just have gaming cons.

Sexism does exist but the articles don't do jack, that's just something we have to wait out instead of creating yet another separation with all these girl gamer sites.

***You disagree with this article because of a rarely used joke based on a fictitious character, but somewhere out there is someone who is offended by it. What are you going to say to them?***

Worry about real issues, not fictitious ones.

And I don't disagree with the article being what it is, I just don't know why it was written. If I disagreed with it, I would have reported it as lame.

"Worry about real issues, not fictitious ones."

Like people playing online games and hearing the words "fag" or other homosexual slurs being thrown around to EVERYONE instead of just a singled out person of possible homosexual orientation?

Like fictional female characters with large chests, thin wastes, and no real body armor somehow being offensive to women?

Like a specific group of gamers needing their own convention because they are somehow ostracized from an already all-inclusive group where the only stipulation for membership is an electronic device used to play games?

Seems like you take the moral high ground when it's convenient or popular to do so (gaymercon), and then yet call something like this trivial and act all sarcastic about it, completely ignoring the possibility that there are people out there who would feel the same about this joke as a girl might feel about Ivy's character or a homosexual person might feel about hearing the word "queer" indiscriminately thrown around in online matches. Hell, look at the CoD painting fiasco.

You can't pick and choose cgoondo.

***Like people playing online games and hearing the words "fag" or other homosexual slurs being thrown around to EVERYONE instead of just a singled out person of possible homosexual orientation? ***

Wait? You believe that's fictitious? You believe that directly calling someone a name like that is fake? Not real?

And, FYI, most of the time, it's directed at an individual. And, even then, it's say in the real world with real meaning.

***You can't pick and choose cgoondo.***

I certainly can when it comes to a real issue in the real world with a fictitious issue in a fake world that is only brought up as a joke that most people don't even know.

---

I'm going to just leave this, DragonKnight. You and I obviously have extremely different view points on this topic (and many others). We are very much opposites in this arena.

Having said that, I respect your opinion. I also know I'm not "right" I just believe the way I do. I'm not sure there is a way to determine "right" and "wrong" on these elements. It's more about how we believe. Not to say it's wrong to discriminate or the like, but about whether GaymerCon is right/wrong or whether this is worthwhile/not worthwhile.

Good gaming to you.

How often is the Birdo thing even brought up? I can only remember it being used in one ign article, can't think of any other time.

I really don't think this has any effect on transgendered people...

I mean, I've seen nerds White Knighting for girl gamers and digital girls (like Lara Croft), but this is just...a bit too much.
Fatty  +   990d ago
I laugh at Birdo because Birdo is a transgender DINOSAUR who shoots eggs, wears mascara, and sports a bow.

I don't laugh at my transgender friend about the fact that he grew up as a girl and is now a boy, and definitely don't think less of him because of a Nintendo character.

Come on guys, seriously, stop making fun of this absurd fictional video game character. It's just offensive to.... absolutely no one now that I think of it.
Summons75  +   990d ago
if it's not one thing someone is crying about it's most certainly another. How dose Birdo at all relate to someone who is a transgender? I stopped taking this article seriously at the point where they said they "have to put down the booze bottle".

The transgender part is not the funny part. The confounding-anatomy-that-must- be-involved-to-shoot-eggs-out-o f-what-appears-to-be-your-mouth part is the funny part. And so is the complex-adult-gender-issues-of fhandedly-mentioned-in-a-childr en's-game part.

I mean, I'm all for equality for everybody, but this is a little bit much.

And by a little, I mean a LOT.
32froshes  +   989d ago
I strongly suggest all you whiners actually read the ENTIRE article. Then think about it. Then read it again in case you didn't really get it.

The point is not to defend Birdo. The point is that "He's a dude!" isn't a good punchline, because it assumes that there's something fundamentally funny about being transgendered. The very notion that the Birdo jokes are based around is offensive to transgendered individuals.

No one cares about offending Birdo. Birdo isn't real. But suggesting transgender is hilarious just because it is, that's offensive to a lot of real-life people.

I'm sorry. I didn't realize Birdo conversations were plaguing the internet these days. Why hasn't this hot topic been brought up in the recent presidential debates? It must be addressed.
