Will Ouya be a Threat for PlayStation and Xbox?

TechPP: Ouya, the console set to be released March next year (or even later) with an Android-based operating system, has created quite some waves since its over-successful fund raising campaign. After gathering enough funds to fuel projects, attract game designers and ship thousands of units, it is time to analyze the possible impact of this product, in a modern battle of David, versus several Goliaths. (Ouya, PS3, Xbox 360)

c'mon now, whens the last time there was even a peep of ouya? when the wii U finally got more press and got a release date all the ouya talk stopped.
doogiebear  +   1018d ago
Yeah, and EVEN STILL, the Wii U isn't that big a threat to ps3 and 360's already massive install base. It's more a threat to ps4 and 720 which will come later. So this Ouya thing has no chance. BUT it can still succeed outside of the major console race just by doing what it does best--cost very little and provide android games. Simple enough of a goal.

is OUYA pronounced..
Oh Yeah? If so then...(koolaid man voice) OH YEAH it's a threat.
ZombieNinjaPanda  +   1018d ago
@Darth

I believe it's pronounced Ooo Yuh. Also I'd just like to mention that the OUYA isn't a thread to anything. If this thing even gets released (The developers have nowhere near enough money to produce the amount of OUYAs they've promised), it will already be out of date, and game developers aren't going to want to develop for a console marketed as "hack this console".

OUTA a threat to PS3 and Xbox 360? Hahaha...

Hahaha... You can find this kind of content only on N4G.

It's not a threat at all.

But I hope it sees decent success. It clearly has a lot of passion for indie developers and ease of use. Unlike the consoles that are adapting more restrictive models and services like Steam that are only bringing on high profile indie games and, with their Greenlight thing, the flashier minecraft ripoffs and mods, Ouya has a model of ease for both developers and players. And if they secure deals with TV manufacturers to have them built into TVs, they'll definitely make a splash.
NYC_Gamer  +   1019d ago
Nope, because those same indie games could be bought on PC/console.
bangshi  +   1019d ago
Or phone.

Mobile phone games on my TV! Yeah... can't wait...

Not.
KMCROC54  +   1019d ago
Or tablet ,maybe even on a mobile device.

Yeah I forgot its N4G.

Sarcasm Mode: {ON} {Off}
ON {Off}

You all really think this little thing will be a threat to the most known and widespread consoles of today? Come on people....
Locksus  +   1019d ago
I think it caters for a different audience altogether, so no, I don't think it'll be that much of a threat for either of them.
OmniSlashPT  +   1019d ago
That's like saying Huwaei is a threat for the iPhone and Android because it's cheap.

No, the OUYA won't stand a chance if it tries to compete with the big 3. It has its niche and could be a sucess if it caters that niche. But don't expect it to sell millions.
jetpacksheep  +   1019d ago
I can't wait to get my OUYA, its use as a media box alone justifies its price and it brings proper controls to games that desperately need proper controls. Not sure on the threat to the big boys though, it could carve out its own little hacking/indie market for people who like the raspberry pi type of hardware.
RubyToTheMax  +   1019d ago
Not at all.

If anything, the OUYA will be a threat to smartphone gaming. I can see smartphone gamers easily adapting to the console since they're familiar with the games and now they have buttons.

But I doubt you will see any games on the OUYA that are as good as XBOX 360, PS3, or Wii games. These dedicated consoles have a long history with games, and you won't find triple AAA titles with the quality and user end experience as the big three.
GameLord08  +   1019d ago
No. Ouya is an evolved concept of mobile gaming that is meant to diminish the problem of our set of gamers being rendered niche on mobile platforms, as well as opening a more expansive console to developers.

With astounding portability (it's the size of a Rubik's Cube), a music player, better controls and thirty-minute game demos available as well as the console being open-source, it opens the prospects of mobile platform gaming being matured and catering to a wider audience than is perceived achievable at the moment, especially as it is also a cheaper option for less privileged gamers.

The only benefit Ouya has that can be considered competitive to mainstream consoles is its use of the OnLive cloud-streaming service, which makes it possible to deliver AAA titles to gamers on the console, especially non-adopters of the PS3 and 360 (and now, possibly Wii U).

In short, it's a neat concept but to me, it has a whole other objective than being a direct competitor to mainstream consoles.
ChunkyLover53  +   1019d ago
I forgot all about this thing, I really think it did well because people are starving for something new, but its definitely not the answer.

I am getting one, but mainly to run roms of other games on my HD TV.

i am laughing my ass off right now.

Piracy will be too rampant
m2stech  +   1019d ago
I think the next-gen competition will be divided into two categories: low-end (wii-u and ouya) for casual/kid games and high end (ps4 and xbox720) for core games
SOULJER  +   1018d ago
NO. Because i'm hacking that system to death.
ajax17  +   1018d ago
Not a chance.
MastaPiff  +   1018d ago
I think it's funny how soo many ppl think graphics = great games. Variety is the spice of life. I'm all for more competition in the console market. I really hope the Ouya does well forcing the big 3 to step their game up. or bring their prices down. (*cough Sony)

Is there any doubt? Playstation came out in 1994 & xbox 2001 the ouya is new. Double check the title it says "Will Ouya be a Threat for PlayStation and Xbox?" :) sorry coudltn resist!
AlexMyDG  +   1018d ago
kma2k, the title was chosen taking in consideration not only the PS3 and the Xbox360, but also past and future generations.
BitbyDeath  +   1018d ago
I don't see it surviving long since it'll be going up against mobiles.

Who?

"Will Ouya be a Threat for PlayStation and Xbox?"

bahahahahahahahahahahahahahah ahahahahahahahahaha

no, seriously... is this a joke? there's no way that a console that's barely better than a mid-range cellphone, that will likely be completely ruined by hackers can compete with X360 of PS3.
thebudgetgamer  +   1018d ago
Remember when Onlive was going to be the end of consoles.
Holeran  +   1018d ago
No. Question answered.

InTheLab  +   1018d ago
Ouya is still a thing, huh?
b_one  +   1018d ago
All "open software" and "linux" nerds should buy it, and leave big consoles alone :D
Dlacy13g  +   1018d ago
It got enough support to ship thousands of units. Let's just let that statement hang for a moment.....Vita ships tens of thousands of units monthly and yet it is largely considered a failure to this point. Ouya will be a blip on the radar.
