Nintendo Possibly Linked With Foxconn and Child Labor For Wii U Production

Nintendo’s name and the Wii U were explicitly stated in the Chinese press, and while Foxconn has responded confirming that it is indeed illegal, they are denying that they had any knowledge of the illegal activity and would halt it, immediately. (Tag Invalid, Wii U)

Update Mod edit: Some specifics not included this article include that the children were between the ages of 14-16 and worked in the factory for about 3 weeks. Then age in China when a child is legally allowed to work is 16. China agencies are reporting that those 14-16 year-olds have returned to school.

http://www.mercurynews.com/...

"[Foxconn] has agreed to third-party audits, however, and pays some of the highest wages for factory work in the country."

It's not some big surprise or secret that Foxconn makes products for Nintendo, but they also build electronics for many, MANY other companies. Do I agree with their methods? No, but it is what it is. Foxconn makes electronics for Nintendo, Apple, Microsoft, Samsung, Cisco, Acer, Motorola, Dell, Intel, HP, Nokia, Vizio Sony, Compaq. Any console you buy has some assembly of components at one of the Foxconn plants. So if anyone gets to feeling all high and mighty up in here, go check which electronics you have in your home first.

Think it stands for UHOH right about now. If this is true, I sure as hell wont be buying one.
AWBrawler  +   743d ago
really reaching. than throw out everything in your house thats made in china, cos i'm sure a child worked on it at some point
SolDojo  +   743d ago
i was really on the fence about it anyways, and there is no call for me to feed nintendo a few hundred more bucks when they do questionable business like this.

not sure that counts as reaching, as im well more than happy to spend that few hundred elsewhere

@Sol
This is a gaming website. What you are saying seems to imply you will buy from another games provider. Except... THEY ALL USE FOXCON.

You should probably throw away anything with a plug if that your attitude, and throw away whatever you are using to connect to the internet.

Shoes, and any other clothing are also made in Chinese factories or any other place that work is outsourced to.

Do the above or be labeled as a hypocrite.

cry.....about it.....

Sadly enough, most of our electronics involve child labor in one form or another: even more likely if they're products manufactured with outsourced labor (which are 99% of electronics).

No one will care ecept share holders. The world will continue to turn and all these mentioned companies will continue to sell thier products by the millions. They'll just shift their work force from Chinese child labor to Taiwanese child labor. The show must go on.
TheModernKamikaze  +   743d ago
I don't think we should blame nintendo for outsourcing their work to another company, nor be liable for what the company (foxconn) does.
DivineAssault  +   743d ago
Just wait til the press shows this.. Tho it prolly wont matter..

Man... can you imagine how much money one of those child laborers would make if they leaked the WiiU specs?
cgoodno  +   743d ago
The last time someone leaked/lost a product they were working on manufacturing (iPhone 4), the individual committed suicide.

So, no, I can't imagine it would be enough to cover the potential loss of life.
mr_magic_mike  +   743d ago
I know that I am asking a lot, especially after such a well known fact, but... link?

p.s.

Oh, could you also provide the link that proves that this wasn't a legitimate suicide?

There's a Wiki page dedicated to trying to track them. The one I'm talking about is second from the top, Sun Dan-yong. He lost an iPhone 4 prototype. He fell from the apartment building after supposedly being beaten and having his apartment searched for the prootype.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

Most people consider it a suicide, but even if it wasn't... it's not worth someone's life to get the info.

Revolution takes sacrifice!

Now, seriously, the only thing I hate about capitalism is how we seek profit at all costs. I still can't believe how much business we do with China - an authoritarian country, without freedom of speech, religion and whatnot, with so many cases of child labor, terrible work conditions, bad manufactured products, and so on.

It still freaks me out when people say that China will be the most important country in the future. Sure, let's give importance and money to a country that does everything we consider bad...
