Best Video Game Endings of All Time

Some of the first video and arcade games ever released had nothing more than plain decorative screens for endings that said, “The End.” As we’ve been spoiled with some of the latest technology and thousands of game releases, we’re also offered much greater, elaborate endings. Whether futuristic or medieval, aliens, monsters or live people, these endings move the player in ways only a video game can (for those who are gamers, at least). (Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts II, PS3, PSP, Retro, The Legend of Zelda)

While not my favourite, Red Dead Redemption has a very memorable ending.

Good endings tie things up succinctly and concisely, and effectively finish the story arc. It should be an ending, as they say. While this sounds like common sense, few games actually get it right.

A recent example for me was Xenoblade Chronicles. It tied up all of it's themes, characters and story arcs and actually ended the game perfectly. No questions left unanswered, no head scratching and clumsy attempts at tying up the rather grandiose themes it tackled (existentialism, divinity, creation/destruction), and no unsubtle suggestions of sequels. No ambiguity. It was over.

There are innumerable instances of endings done wrong, so I won't delve into that, but Xenoblade really struck me as one that was done right. Some others (off the top of my head):

Red Dead Redemption
MGS 3
Chrono Trigger (and Cross)
FF VI

Final Fantasy 8 (made me cry :S)
Final Fantasy X (kind of the same I believe, just great overall)
Lost Odyssey (great ending to a great game)

Borderlands 2 was pretty good. Not saying anything but it had me saying "ohhh shieeet" :P...seriously said that to the person I was playing with.

I guess everything else I can think of might be a movie, or I'm trying to compare endings of games i enjoy...it just depends.

Wow I forgot about Kingdom Hearts game and they were in the tags! haha. Beat both of the ones on the PS2 and they were excellent. LoZ:OOT/MM was alright, I had beat both but nothing as enthralling as some others I have played, but that doesn't mean they're bad.

There are horrible endings, bad endings, good endings and fantastic endings...And I'm trying to think of ones with fantastic endings (that are of my own opinion)

Some games can leave the ending open, or end it well. It doesn't really matter to me as long as it does a good job of leaving a cliff-hanger (if a possible game comes after it) or a closed ending (which can always be revived anyways haha).
