5 Games That Redefined Their Genres

"A game doesn’t have to be first at something in order to succeed—it just has to take an old element and find a way to make it new and enjoyable. These five games did just that: they took everything good about their genre, added in their own unique ideas, and delivered a new archetype that would change the way their genre was perceived for years to come. Without further ado, here are five games that redefined their genres." (3DS, Goldeneye 007, Minecraft, Nintendo DS, PC, PS Vita, PS3, PSP, Resident Evil, Wii, Wii U, Xbox 360)

... There are so many problems with this article, I don't know where to start.

"Super Mario Bros greatly increased the graphics standard of games on the NES..."

Super Mario Bros was a launch title. I would also argue that platformers didn't REALLY exist before it, so it didn't really redefine a genre. Could you argue that Pitfall or Pac Land were platformers? Sure... but... well... *pokes you in the eye and runs away*

"Legend of Zelda..."

Mentions everything that Zelda did except possibly the most important; introducing the ability to save your game progress onto the cartridge.

"Resident Evil was one of the first survival horror games and possibly even named the genre..."

Yes, the first Resident Evil coined the term "survival horror." As far as influence goes, I think just as strong of a case could be made for games like Alone in the Dark – which if you're old enough to remember, was mind-blowing at the time it came out. That game actually frightened me as a kid.

Sara: I hope you don't mind the criticism. I normally really enjoy reading your opinion pieces, but I just can't get behind you on this one; too many disagreements. Of course, you're totally entitled to your own opinion.

Standard list except for the elephant in the room. Minecraft history has yet to be proven. Good Game? Yes. On this list? No Way.

No doom? WTF!

Also, I feel COD: MW should be on here because that started the whole get a kill, get XP craze. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Alright.

Battlefield 2 started the XP thing. :)

EDIT: It should be noted that Insomniac created getting XP for every single bullet, instead of just kills. (Resistance 2)
