Violent video games make teenagers more aggressive, study finds

Teenagers who play violent video games over a number of years become more aggressive towards other people as a result, a new study has found. (Culture)

They can take that study... And shove it up their ---. :D

See? I put a smiley face, so I can't be aggressive.

Wow, teenagers can be obnoxious, aggressive brats, in other news a new study found that water is actually wet..
DeadlyFire  +   1215d ago
I call BS.

Teenagers are naturally aggressive. Fact that they didn't kill anyone or get arrested should be evidence enough that video games helped them tone down their violence. This is just another bogus study.

What else is new? This is just common sense. Of course some people STILL refuse to believe it. sigh.

Sure it's common sense. Do some research by non-bias soruces and you'll be smacking yourself up your own head when you discover the truth.
madjedi  +   1216d ago
The truth, how about any activity that is violent or aggressive in nature will stimulate the areas of the brain that make the person act more aggressively. Like contact sports, hunting ect. Funny how every single one of them isn't on trial for murder, rape, assault ect.

"non-bias soruces" If humans are involved your going to have bias.

Actually common sense isn't that common despite it's name, and can vary greatly from person to person and the activity.

When someone can show me what video games hitler, stalin and ancient eygptians played, that turned them violent. I am all for it.

New personal observation(warning contains some human bias) violent video games will increase a individuals aggressiveness, just like any other form of violent stimuli will.

Do you idiots live in a bubble separated from all contact with humans.

There are somethings that deserve serious scientific research, this is a thing that makes you question how much money is wasted on these ridiculous studies, that could be better spent elsewhere.

Tired of idiots trying to use video games as a scapegoat for the actions of violent individuals in our society. Or refusing to accept the consequences of their actions, and blaming on everything else.

Humans have always been violent, likely always will be.

That isn't the issue, it's people who do not control their violent impulses or tendencies that is the problem. <-- Focus on the important issue stupid.

Common sense is the fact that a book, video game, movie should not be your parent.

I have been playing violent video games since I was 5 years old when Mario started throwing turtles. I am currently 25 years old without any problems. Still playing violent video games. My study has shown no signs of increased aggression.

You my friend need to learn the difference between a biased opinion/possibly rigged study and Bullshit.

Teenage years are naturally the more aggressive/violent ones. Everyone wants to be noticed and when they are not the mind starts placing blame. Its just how the mind works when it searches for answers.
mynameisEvil  +   1216d ago

As someone who's played games since the age of three, I can easily say that I've never hit someone unless hit first. Then again, this is The Telegraph, so I don't expect much truth to come rushing out of them any time soon.

Typicall, don't blame the parents for their spoiled shitty kids, blame video games!
hiptanaka  +   1216d ago
In other news, smoking is not good for you.
ChunkyLover53  +   1216d ago
Always have to blame something, scapegoats are nothing new. I remember when I was younger and I'd use Myspace my folks would always act like it was some illicit thing, mainly because Liberal news would always end a story with "Underage girl gets molested with man she met on Myspace". If parent paid attention, we wouldn't see all of these problems.

I know spanking and punishing kids isn't the "hip" thing to do these days, but its clear that this generation is full of angry and annoying kids/teens.
CrimsonessCross  +   1216d ago
"the kid fell into my hand at full force, I swear!"

"oh we were just playing a game, it was to see how long we could stare at a corner for 10 minutes"

True though. They make it sound like it happens for everyone and anyone. OH GOD MAKE IT STOP! (lol). You have to have anger issues in the first place, or at least any other problem. It doesn't make things automatically develop unless you're so disconnected from reality you were already loopy before the games got to you.

They do alleviate emotions and such, I would rather take a virtual world and do everything I KNOW would NOT fly in the real world in my own space.

Really cause video games helped me with my stress and anger cause by school.

What a bunch of bullshit! Who the fuck believes this shit?

metsgaming  +   1216d ago
Just because there is a correlation doesn't mean there is any proof of causality. I played a game and then went to the bathroom. Those two things happened sure but one didnt cause the other to happen in any way. Prove it was the games that caused aggression, it could easily be the aggression caused them to start to play the game as a form of an outlet etc.

The reality is that playing games is better they could be out joining gangs and doing dumb stuff for entertainment etc

Other studies say teenagers do not get more aggressive so who to belive? Been playing since I was 8 and now at a age of 34 I cant say it made me as a teenager or growing up any aggressive at all...

In fact it helped me in my childhood, instead of getting in to trouble all the time as many of my friends did I stayed home out of harms way.

And im sure games have infact saved my life as a adult, I suffer from really hard depression and when it all seams to fall appart I can escape in to all kinds of exciting worlds. Far away from any pain....

I grew up beating the living fuck out of non-existent computer generated polygons my whole life and I didn't turn out to be some gross basement loser sociopath in real life like this study suggests. This has no credibility at all.

But PETA believes you are learning to brutalize animals too! (aka the Pokemon crap going on) XD

What are these things coming to today? too much sensitivity trying to control everything we enjoy. -sigh-

A wise man once said, "...people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. 14% of all people know that." ~ Homer J Simpson.

Seriously, so many good comments already made that refutes this Canadian rubbish of a study. And "violent" games are what...things like Mario Kart? Because I think that game is responsible for road rage. Really, I do!

Anybody...ANYBODY who becomes violent as a result of playing video games is ill. Perhaps we should ban cereal mascots, because some sick bastard may end up mauling somebody because Tony the Tiger told him to over breakfast.
TheGOODKyle  +   1216d ago
I will keep on posting this as long as these bogus, biased studies keep coming out.

Back then it was Comics, then it became TV shows and Movies and now Video games. Can't we just all accept that everyone goes through a rough patch known as puberty and its all about proper and responsible Parenting.
