Happy Wars: Does Free-To-Play On Xbox 360 Work?

Gamasutra- "Happy Wars" is not exactly a stand-out name for a video game, yet this newly launched Xbox Live Arcade title is rather special -- it's the Xbox 360's first ever free-to-play title.

Given how long free-to-play has been around (and has been dominating video game headlines), it's taken a while for Microsoft's current home console to take note of the industry curve and jump in at the deep end. The big question, of course, is whether or not the free-to-play business model will work on Microsoft's console.

So is this free for anyone on XBL or gold members? Because if its the latter, then its technically not really "free-to-play".

I read this article, and was just about to make the same comment....

killerhog1382d ago (Edited 1382d ago )

Yeah and if its the latter, it just means these devs/ms are screwing people over, as you're technically paying for the game, but they will still charge you for items and other things.

@maniac

Gold members pay for XBL in order to access anything online. So its not free-to-play because you are paying Ms and obviously the devs if you choose to buy things with cash. Free-to-play would be dust 514 as anyone can play it without paying Sony or the devs (unless you choose to buy items with cash).

The game is free to gold members. So yes it is free.

Gridloc1382d ago

$60 a year for gold=not free...

GraveLord1382d ago

That's like saying "buy a house, get a free fridge". The fridge isn't really free.......

Same goes for Playstation Plus. Except, Playstation Plus actually offers great value and the benefits the consumer.

maniacmayhem1382d ago

@Gridloc

This isn't talking about gold membership, Gold members (ha) get the game for free. It follows the same rules as other free-to-play games. Don't know why all of a sudden the rules for Xbox 360 has been changed.

@Gravelord
But the fridge is free, you bought the house you got the fridge for free. When I bought a house it didn't come with a fridge I had to buy one. I would have loved that deal.

You subscribe to PSN/Live you get free games.

IronFistChinMi1382d ago

It's mentioned in the article.

But the games we get on PSN+ are free!! Right.

vividi1382d ago

they are complete games, psn has free to play games that actually are free, everyone can play the games

InTheLab1382d ago

You don't need PSN+ to play ANY F2P games on PSN. They are available to all and no additional cost.

That's what some are trying to point out and what some are blatantly ignoring.

vividi1380d ago

Lab, exactly, nice to see some common sense here LOL!

Ahhh comments sections like these remind me of the days of PSN+ emerging.

The whole issue of are the games free or part of a service.

However, XBLG has just added the free to play game project. Before today gold was still there and had X amount of services. This is a new one....and no additional charge.

So yes, it isn't free because you need to pay to play it.
But no, it is free because you are not paying anything within the service and getting more content.

Similar arguments could be made for PSN+.

Either way, just game and get over it.

InTheLab1382d ago

And what of the actual F2P games on PSN? None of them are walled off by PSN+.

And what of the difference between F2P Live games and games like Borderlands or The Walking Dead?

I don't think anyone would be talking about this if the games were on the free version of Live...as they should be.

ItsTrue1382d ago

The whole 'free' not being free thing applies to both Xbox and PS3 in my opinion.
For PS+, you pay for the service but get free games from doing so. This wouldn't strictly be considered free.
Same goes for these so called 'free to play' games. You have to pay for gold before you can play for free.
Just as an opinion, I wouldn't necessarily either free because you have to give something to receive something.

Xbox Live Gold is a paid premium service. Happy Wars is part of that service. The game itself is absolutely free if you have Xbox Live Gold. The big difference to this and PSN+ is that once you have the game with XBL, and if you decide not to renew your Gold, you'll still have the game.

I like to think of this as an extra step in getting Gold Members more value. I have never paid more than $35 for a year of Gold, in the last couple of months I've gotten 3 free games. Mars Rover, Haunt and Happy Wars. I'm more than happy with the service and the only people complaining are those well known PS3 trolls that try and battle semantics unsuccessfully.

I don't even know what this game is about, but it's free so I'm trying it.
