* Big companies try to wait and see what is popular within the indie circle and then create they're own version of it, but this fails because they don't have the hands on experience of 2-3 years developing said title so they are just guessing at how the indie guys were so successful.
I believe that the staleness is from action shooters this generation. A "very old" concept is not a "tired" concept by any means, otherwise Starcraft 2 was a rehashed cash grab (which we both know isn't true).
You can't reinvent the wheel i'm afraid, much like any industry most things are based on a working formula. Once every so often, a game pushes that formula a little further then others replicate this idea until the next step forwards.
And originality doesn't necessarily make it automatically appealing or succesful. Cooking Mama is about as original as it gets, absolutely no f*cking appeal to me whatsoever.
its because developers are running out of ideas. why? because back in the early 90's there were only like 2 genres: fps's and sidescrollers, and it was kinda easy to do some innovation
Oh the irony, XCOM is a remaake of sorts of a PC game from decades ago. Read the topic of this article then read what you've said.
Not slating you, just funny that Xcom is appealing to you yet its a very old concept its based around. :)

Here in the west otherwise there is a BIG lack of originality.
