'Skylanders' will not replace portal with Wii U's NFC

The GamePad for Nintendo's upcoming console includes near-field communication functionality, but studio head Paul Reiche believes the portal will remain a "fundamental" part of the franchise.

"The problem is, if you look at the NFC, it's in the GamePad, which is really convenient if you want to do the traditional 'swipe your card', but trying to set a toy on there, it slides off," he said.

"At first, we looked at the NFC feature before we got the hardware specs and we were, like, 'Uh-oh, now everybody can do this'.

"Then we saw the Raving Rabbids and the video that showed them putting the toy on the GamePad."

Reiche added: "Unfortunately, [Ubisoft] dropped that feature, and I think for potentially the same reasons, which is - for an ongoing game mechanic, it didn't seem well-suited, as you are holding the GamePad." (Skylanders Giants, Wii U)

I've never played the Skylanders game, so probably I'm missing something here, but... I don't understand why the toys would need to stay on the portal, or the NFC detector of the Wii U's gamepad.

Wouldn't it be enough to just put the toy near the NFC just long enough for it to recognise said toy, then let the game open whatever unlockable the toy unlocks?

Why does it need to stay there at all times? :/

The toy is basically a storage device. When the character finds treasure, collectibles, levels up, etc - the game stores that data onto a chip located on the toy. The idea being that kids can bring their toy to their friends house and play with "their" character. It sounds silly, but it works well and it's the main reason why the toy is required at all times.

Who cares its a childish gimmick and im glad as all i want NFC for is security reasons paying for micro tranactions or Downloads ect couldnt care less as i was worried about this feature being used in hardcore games making them cheap keep the feature for gods sake it sounds gay.

So why couldnt someone use the Pro controller, while placing the Gamepad on the table with the toy on top of it at all times? Is this hard to comprehend? I dont see why that option would be a problem if its needed.
