Nintendo looks to be on cutting edge again

At first, you might think Nintendo is flat-out crazy.

The company is launching a new $300 game console amid the biggest slump in video-game sales in years.

It’s also taking on Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon.com and everyone else selling new Web tablets this holiday season. (Industry, Next-Gen, Nintendo, Wii U)

Excellent article, very good read.

Indeed. Anytime some new tech comes out I am always excited to try it out. Being a gamer, anything that offers more of an experience is definitely something I am willing to try. I don't care if it is Xbox, Sony, Nintendo or Flim-Flam Head.

If it sucks, well that will be my call based on my feeling about what it gives me in my gaming experience and I will stop using it. Elevated enjoyment is my main goal in buying new hardware.software.

They could take on Apple if they start offering IOS app to play exclusively on the Wii U Gamepad. People will gladly buy Angry Birds or that sort of games to play while in the bedroom, or while going to the bathroom and then resume their gameplay afterwards.

Using a Wiimote and or seeing it for the first time experiencing what seemed like virtual reality-human interaction with computers is something much different than a fancy futuristic= http://www.everythingicafe....

Give me a break, Wii is not going up against tablets anymore than an oven goes up against a microwave.
SolidDuck  +   640d ago
Again??? and an HD console 7 years late to the party that will be severely underpowered when nextbox and ps4 come out. Damn that is cutting edge. Do u think Nintendo could invent like a phone, but without wires. Like u can take it with u, like a mobile phone. Wow if Nintendo could invent phones without wires, now that would be cutting edge.

LMAO. Agree.

So many of you fanboy nerds are hilarious, stating the same bull about how the Wii U is going to be severly underpowered. Obviously all three of the next gen consoles will be able to output true 1080p 60fps with all kinds of brilliant lighting effects and gazzilions of polygons and particles. So I'm certain it has come to a point were art direction and asthetics will be far more important than technical specs and graphics fidelity. Nintendo has always excelled at those first two not to mention innovative fun gameplay. I'm not so sure it will be worth the year or two + wait for the PS4, 720 just for slightly more powerful hardware. Regardless it's an awesome time to be a gamer unless of course your fanboy that has a grudge against Nintendo and obsesses over specs etc, sucks to be you lol.

LOL!

ya meant the traditional small ones or the big ones? or both?

LOL "ovens" is a general term because they are both ovens

i don't use microwave ovens

these Wii U articles are driving gamers nuts

Sorry, the Wii U is not a preview of the next generation. It can barely do more things the current gen can.

The PS4 and NextBox will be miles ahead at launch of what the Wii U will be able to do its entire lifespan.

If Nintendo want to appeal to hardcore gamers, it's not gonna happen, not with the other 2 competitors who will release something miles ahead of it.

Oh jeez, another one of these comments? Really?

Four times the RAM of current HD hardware, a modern GPGPU and a CPU whose only alleged fault on the console is a low clock speed (which the guys at Namco said can be worked around).

Not to mention that this thing can project video game imagery on both a TV and on the gamepad with very little latency issues at 1080p resolution at 60fps WHILE multitasking.

"It can barely do more than current gen" has to be the most misinformed and ignorant statement about this console all week.

you are correct tho it trashes what current gen can do and then some

I think most will find that the graphical leap between the next xbox/ps3 will not be all that much more impressive.

Cutting edge is great but I agree it would have been nice to see them bleeding edge. Back in the day when Nintendo came out with a new console it was ahead of its time. But what do I know they sold millions of wii and its not even HD.

i cant wait to see what the wii u is really like.. So much is still a mystery with its UI & network functionality.. Maybe someone will have a breakdown on youtube before launch day comes to show what it can do..

"Nintendo’s business model is also key, because it’s not competing with the video companies needed to make Nintendo TV a success. Unlike Microsoft and Sony, Nintendo is not running a video store that conflicts with services on its platform."

“Essentially we were the perfect vehicle to drive this type of innovation into the home, whereas all of the other competitors have maybe an issue from a partnership standpoint that is tough to solve,” Fils-Aime said.

"Instead of trying to become the new cable box, Nintendo wants the Wii U to augment whatever TV setup people are using."

This is extremely important and one key point in why I'm interested in the Wii U as my new media hub. If it can pull it off well, then I'm all in!

This was a very informative article full of key facts and was very helpful. Thank you!

that, and nintendo will STOMP ms and sony for the forseeable future

So I can finally watch DISC based MOVIES on my Wii U right?
ronin4life  +   640d ago
No, but you can watch them on any number of the other devices you are bound to own. AND you won't have to pay an extra $50+ dollars on your wiiu for what would amount to being a pointless feature.

i understand why u love nintendo cuz i have a place in my heart for them too but to say they have a lot of support has two truths.. In japan its killing it with all the great outside support but 80% of it wont make it to the west bro.. Thats my point about them not being useful for anything besides 1st party offerings.. did u see this? theres another somewhere saying they want the games to be released but theyre nowhere in sight & the damn thing is region locked dude.. Nintendo are innovators & i respect their work but the original devs rarely even handle ports for em.. ME trilogy isnt going on it but 3 is being ported by some other ppl, NOT bioware.. AC3 & COD seem to be THE ONLY multiplat games with simultaneous releases.. Listen i am buying one as soon as i see smash bros, metroid, & zelda but to say nintendo is good for 3rd party is just silly.. Tecmo/Koei wouldnt even publish ninja gaiden 3 on it, nintendo had to.. when the 2nd wave of titles start pouring in, thats when it will shine.. Depending on how they handle their network & features.. Great potential but as with all their previous systems, great potential doesnt always get put to use.. i personally would love to see accomplishments built in but thats not happening unless the devs take the time to build it into the game a specific way.. they wont be system level accomplishments.. WHY? even vita has em..Be careful pal, cuz i see all the new casual just dance type games get announced for it immediately with the others but no MG revengence? no splinter cell? thats fishy to me

I do not care. Just give me the games Nintendo, (Which so far, judging by the announcements made, you most certainly will). It's a shame Rayman Legends was delayed but that means Rayman Legends, Pikmin 3 and Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate within the space of 3 months? No console can claim it had such a killer line up of exclusive games within the first 3 months of it's life. Can't wait.

If this can play movies and TV shows from a HDD it could replace my HTPC.

nintendo is getting everything right with wiiu and all its offerings...here is to hoping 13 year old sony and ms fanboys stop hating and really take a closer look..
