Modern Cartoons Are Full of Classic Game References I was recently watching an episode of Disney Channel’s new cartoon Gravity Falls. The dry sense of humor and catchy character design made me fall for this show. Kristin Schaal (Mel from Flight of The Concords) voices the lovable and crazy Mabel, and that character alone should sell it to you. But the last episode I watched, titled “Fight Fighters”, was what tipped me from an interested party to a full fledged fan. This episode gives a modern commentary on classic arcade games. Based clearly on the Street Fighter series, this episode see the main charter, a 12-year-old boy named Dipper, wish a character from the game to come out and defend him against an emo bully. The following scenes are comedy gold and anyone who grew up with 16bit games will find something to relate to and remember. As my partner and I watched this, we wondered how much kids today are going to pick up. Will they know about arcade machines? What about poorly animated characters? But perhaps it is not for them and a nod to the parents in the audience, just something to say “Hey, we know you’re there too!”
