Understanding Desktop CD/DVD Drives

CD recorders are very standardized and should be compatible with almost all equipment out there. Some CD burners maybe be listed as a combo or CD-RW/DVD drive. These can support reading and writing to CD media and can read DVD media ut not write to it.

The Blu-ray and HD-DVD options are available for those wanting high definition video. At this point the format is not used for data storage so buying a writer or burner of these formats isn't really that important. The costs for the drives is still high but rapidly dropping as they become more widespread. Of course, until the format war is completely resolved it is best to hedge your bet by getting one that supports both formats.
