SCE President Andrew House told Japanese Business paper Nikkei that the 'business model of switching to a new console' every few years is gone.
I hope it doesn't end up like getting a new console every 15+ years.
that we are familiar with. We are in a time where things can be changed and added to an existing platform to extend its relevancy. It's funny how a new coat of paint can make anything old feel like new again. By that i am referring to how the 360 old dash was changed into a new dash. Sony can take the existing xmb and retool it into something radically different and yet its still the same platform. However, even they know that playing software on tech that is 6, 7 or 8 years old just doesnt cut it. "Few" years maybe not but 6-7 is realistic and obtainable.
Don't fall for the feign. Christmas 2013-Spring 2014, the Wii U will see to that.
We're already well past the usual console life cycle, so...
He is banking on the Cloud to make PS4 last between 7-10 years before a new console is thought of being released. They only really added 1 year to their 5/10 year plan as far as I can tell from the PS2 days. From PS3 it appears 6/12. So PS4 is on the 7/14 year plan. I say that is a mistake, but only time will tell. Its funny how fast they jump into the game when a competitor announces a new console. I say it depends entirely on what the competition does. I wonder if they would let Nintendo release a real high end console before they push a new console. I expect the generation after the new one we will see all 128-bit gaming. As that is estimated to start around 2015 or so with CPUs or so I have heard rumors. Although some 128-bit CPUs do exist now.
why not? In a rush to shell out a ton of money again? I could be happy with 15+ years of a console. I'm happy with the games out now. It's why I've never bought an Iphone. Every 1-2 years, small gimmicky additions to every new version NOT worth the money.
I doubt a console would last 15 years without failing, so if I'm likely going to have to purchase multiple consoles within that time frame, why not a newer and better one?
Good, it means we won't see an Apple style business model. "new consoles! This time very slightly changed and it will be out dated in 6 months!" Bad because its exciting seeing a new console and ill miss that.
New consoles should come out when there is a new leap in tech or the 7 year mark when they can create much better games with updated hardware. Which ever comes first. Think about it, most great games take 2 to 3 years to make so a great studio can only do a couple games a generation.
Just make them backwards compatible so people don't bitch.
People will always bitch about something.
As long as the console is supported with great IPs, and the game engines keep getting better, console does not run out of steam, this is a great idea. Wii U is playing catchup with gfx.
