One Guy Hit Borderlands 2’s Level Cap in a Record-Setting 43 Hours

Matt Siegfried wanted to be first.

So, the championship gamer—who's already notched #1 rankings in various titles—got Borderlands 2 as soon as he could at a midnight launch and started playing right away. (Borderlands 2, PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

Damn, surprised he didnt die from sitting in place that long.. Some ppl are more core than ill ever be.. I dont have the time for that kind of dedication.. Even if i did, i wouldnt play something that long like this.. Now what does he have to look forward to?
JellyJelly  +   267d ago
I'm sure he'll find other games to feed his OCD.
guitarded77  +   267d ago
Exactly... Speed running and speed completionists aren't exactly what I consider gamers. They typically aren't playing to experience the game, but to prove a point to themselves. I'm not knocking them... it's their time and money, but then you have people who say "____ game is too short because some guy in South Korea bet it in ____ time period", when in reality, games like Borderlands 2, Skyrim, etc, etc are meant to be enjoyed over a long time period... Not rammed down the pipe, chewed up and spit out.
lastdual  +   267d ago
Eh, whatever makes them happy. I prefer to take my time and soak up the atmosphere of a game, but if someone else prefers speed runs or trying to top the leaderboards, etc., then more power to them.

Just try not to damage your health. Even if a game you've been waiting for just released, it's still important to get a little exercise every day.
badz149  +   267d ago
this is not normal speedrun
43 hours of any game is LONG no matter how you see it! you don't ask about atmosphere or anything if you've played the game for 43 hours!

the way I look at is: he finished the game in less than 2 days, breaking a record, but ultimately destroying the entire experience of playing a game.

I love milking my own experience with a game, taking my time, hell I'll stop a game after an hour or so just to get excited about the prospect of jumping back in later.

It's hopefully his playstyle, and if he's doing it to be an elitist prick and chest thump his achievement, than who is to stop him?
scotchmouth  +   266d ago
I am right there with ya. Taking my time and enjoying the details
showtimefolks  +   267d ago
I rather play take my time open every little chest for weapons, money and ammo than to rush through it

I spent over 150-200 hrs into borderlands 1 with all it's dlc and that's playing single player no co-op

But great for him and his achievement
Legion21  +   267d ago
That's ridiculous, the game hasn't even been out for a week.

Eh I guess. Me and my friend already beat every mission on true vault hunter and got Terra down to a 1 minute 30 second fight. When you factor in his down time and such, it's actually a MUCH shorter fight.
Dms2012  +   267d ago
Pace yourself man, jeez.
AzaziL  +   267d ago
what's funny is the boatload of gamers that follow this guy's example and a week from now will be complaining about how short the game was.
badz149  +   267d ago
seriously
how is 43 hours "short"? as a beginner, I finished Kingdom Hearts 100% in under 30H...that's short, but this, not even close!
steve30x  +   267d ago
@ badz149: To a lot of people a 43 hour game is short.
AzaziL  +   266d ago
Last I checked, a lot of best selling titles could be beat in 5-10 hours. 43 hours on a speedrun is love.
BeAGamer  +   267d ago
hardcore!
TheGOODKyle  +   267d ago
This is newsworthy? I can name 5 people off the top of my head who are already level 50 or damn close to it around 45 hours as well. This isn't anything special especially in a SP and Co-Op game.
Jumper09  +   267d ago
he should get a live...
cra2yey3z  +   267d ago
It's life first of all and it's not your life he's wasting.
RustedMan  +   267d ago
Typo or no typo,
take out the words, "get" and "a"
and your left with a similar sentiment:

he should live.
RonaldRaygun  +   267d ago
He's actually on my friends list and we've gamed together for a couple years now, so I can vouch for him being a pretty normal college kid who is in good shape and has a social life. He's just extremely good at time management and will occasionally clear his schedule for ridiculously long gaming sessions when a new game comes out.
HammadTheBeast  +   267d ago

Some will call that hardcore... I think there are other adjectives to use...and many aren't too complimentary. But, clearly he is young so what the hell... congrats you win a ... ummm...well...yeah..you win the... pat on the back.
bubblebeam  +   266d ago
Congrats to him. I myself take longer to beat games (even the more linear ones) than my 9 year old cousin.
I could beat it in half the time as him, but I always soak up the experience and look for easter eggs and collectibles.

He did a good job, I myself wouldn't do that If I was paid, as it wouldn't be enjoyable AT ALL (for me) so therefore that game would be ruined forever for me.

I suppose there are many more 'Tiers' of CORE than we gamers think about.
jd666  +   267d ago
His life is now complete!! He's peaked, it's all downhill from here!!!
Bathyj  +   267d ago
how is that even possible?
ive played this so much is less than a week and im only level 20
ABizzel1  +   267d ago
LOL, I'm guess you're a bit of an explorer.

I've been playing since launch and I'm Lv. 42, beat all mission on first playthrough, and almost finished with my true vault hunter playthrough, and I've seen people further than that.
Bathyj  +   267d ago
I guess. I do tend to sneak and look around alot.
People are always complaining about 6 hour games buy I usually beat them in double that.
ABizzel1  +   267d ago
I can see it now. You carefully look at each and every item you come across, trying to determine it's worth.

I was like that, but it's kind of pointless in Borderlands 2, because you'll find purple gun then find a white version of the same gun that's 5 levels higher and it'll trounce the purple gun. Borderlands 2 kind of forces you to constantly upgrade your weapons and either sale or give your weapons to lower level players.

Also it's best to collect all available missions, and go the the town and do all the mission on that one map, rather than traveling back and forth over and over.
Bathyj  +   267d ago
Yeah, I do pretty much look at every item and check if its better than what I have.

There so much hoarding in Borderlands, its almost as bad as Skyrim.
admiralvic  +   267d ago
The fame is a LOT faster if you have a good partner or know what you're doing. Me and my friend decided to do a co op of it and have done the following things...

Nearly 10,000 badass rank
Can defeat Terra without dying and in minutes (the only one I timed was 1 minute 30 seconds)
All missions complete on True Vault Hunter
9 Legendary level 50 items (only counting the mod once)
Over 60% off the skins
All Area's explored
All arena's completed (including Moxxi)
Missing 1 trophy (plus the platinum)
etc.

Even getting level 50 in 2 days isn't an insane feat. This being said, how can this be a "record setting" time when there isn't even a real record. For all we know, he's just the most vocal about being level 50 or the most well known.

MrAnderson  +   267d ago
there's a difference between challenging yourself, making the game harder, or doing like a 3 hour dark souls speed run for fun/difficulty....but playing pretty much 43 hours straight, get a damn life...
Donnywho  +   267d ago
To each their own Sir. To each their own.
Bimkoblerutso  +   267d ago
^ In many cases, that's like saying the same thing to a drug addict. I know several people with similar gaming habits, and it's NOT just a healthy predilection toward challenge.

In fact, it's not about "fun" in any conventional sense of the word at all. It's JUST a compulsion, like any other addiction.
MrAnderson  +   267d ago
there's a difference between doing what you want, and unhealthity playing a game for 43 hours for an arbitrary sense of self satisfaction, no washing, eating sleeping or going to the bathroom properly, it's unhygenic, unhealthy, and utterly pointless. he'd have done less damage to himself if he just snorted coke for an hour instead...
Captain Qwark 9  +   266d ago
@BIMKO

i agree, i know several people like this, a game comes out, they put aside any responsibility they have, work, girlfriend or wife, kids, cleaning, bathing themselves, gym, etc and just play the game.

this one isnt as bad as say skyrim was for those people but 40+ hrs of gaming in a week is just sad. 20 for me is prob the most ever and thats still neglecting half of my chores, responsibilities, not going to the gym, etc. it def seems like an addiction too them, they cant seem to just play it in moderation it has to be nonstop until that level cap is hit. i imagine if bethesda or gearbox made the level cap double what it was they prob would have died gaming
Donnywho  +   266d ago
How many collective hours have you three spent obsessing over other people's obsessions? That's not healthy either.
GrahamGolden  +   267d ago
thats nothing...there are guyz who finished morrowind for example in 4min and 7min xd
MysticStrummer  +   267d ago
Congrats I guess, but I think it's a horrible way to play a game for the first time. I have two different characters going, at about the same place in the story. I just got to Opportunity and I'm loving this game. Speed runs aren't my thing anyway, but I wouldn't try it until after I've enjoyed the story to it's fullest. Definitely my Game of the Year so far.
MasterD919  +   267d ago
There is no way he actually got the chance to enjoy everything though...It was probably more like a race, therefore he skipped over certain things other players most likely enjoyed...

And I'm sure he also lost a lot of sleep during this period as well...mixed in with fast food and very little shower time.

annus  +   266d ago
Less pathetic than only doing something solely for the purpose of benefiting society or gaining a financial status.

Imagine doing something for fun or enjoyment.
Inb4 he doesn't enjoy it. Just because you wouldn't, doesn't mean others don't.
omarzy  +   267d ago
I love speed runs. Last good one i watched was Wind Waker in less than 5 hours.
Gamer1982  +   267d ago
I dont know whos sadder the guys who played it in 5 hours or the saddos who sat and watched him play for 5 hours.. In fact tats an easy one.. The guys who sat and watched somebody play and complete it in 5 hours. Thats 5 hours I could have been enjoying a game or having a life. Time is too precious to be doing crap like that.
omarzy  +   266d ago
people have movie marathons, i have this. People real fiction novels that have almost no benefit for anything, i have this, and i also read those fiction novels as well.
