Square-Enix: Developer Review

Discussing the positives and negatives of Square-Enix as a developer/publisher. (Dev, Nintendo DS, PC, PS3, PSP, Square Enix, Wii, Xbox 360)

I really hope that Square-Enix will do better next gen, but I have a feeling they'll just continue on with the handheld offerings and produce decreasing quality games for consoles.

With the exception of publishing Sleeping Dogs, Square-Enix have been terrible this gen.

Yeah, at least for consoles anyway. Their development really only did well on handhelds. It's unfortunate that last gen we received masterpieces from Squaresoft and this gen we've received garbage from Square-Enix.

To be fair Squeenix make some great handheld games, its just Final fantasy 13 and 13-2 that are awful

They are publishing some great games, (Deus Ex, Just Cause 2, Sleeping Dogs, CODMW3, ETC....but they needs to go back to what made them SquareSoft. get those minds to dig deep in that vault of fatansy, magic, and sheer brilliance,...I wanna experience titles like Final Fantasy 9 or Vagrant Story or Chrono Trigger only in next Gen format,...those was truly a fantasy game.

Publishing is easy though. It's just throwing money around. Like you said, they need to get back to being great developers. I'd love to see an FFTactics sequel done in the gameplay style of Valkyria Chronicles (minus the guns of course) that tells the story of what Ramza was up to after the events of FFTactics.

Square's main issue with consoles this gen is that they tried making "AAA" titles, when like Capcom, they've only ever been a "B" to "A" level dev. It was fan support which made their games AAA.

My biggest complaint with Squarenix this gen is that they have way to much on their plate before going up for seconds. There are too many games in development or announced before their previous games are completed eg. Final Fantasy Versus 13.

I want Squarenix to finish what they started before announcing a new game in development. Heck even stopping development of a game to finish a just announced game eg. Lightning Returns & Final Fantasy 13-2 at the sake of Versus is frustrating for the supporters of the company.

If I were in charge here is what I would do:

- Localize Type-0

- Finish Versus 13

- Sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics

- Final Fantasy lightning returns would be canceled.

- Use money from ^ and put it towards Final Fantasy XV ( console release )

- Final Fantasy XVI for PS Vita & 3DS ( Both US & JP )
