The Dangers Of Overhyping Games

MasonicGamer.com: In the decade that’s passed since the release of MGS, the internet has forever changed the way we consume media. No longer do gamers have to sit by their mailbox, eagerly awaiting the next issue of their favorite magazine in order to see the latest screenshots of their most anticipated titles. These days we all have constant, 24-hour-a-day access to every piece of info we could possibly want, on even the most obscure releases. As a result, the hype-monster has grown from an unfriendly troll who lives under a bridge and occasionally tries to snatch up children into a giant Godzilla-style beast who can flatten entire city blocks with a single flick of its tail. Video games seem to generate more of this than any other type of entertainment, as hardcore fans will analyze every minute detail of screenshots and videos, coming up with their own conclusions which can be shared, instantly, with the rest of the world.... (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

You get a Wii u. Me and other nintendo fanatics overhyped the Wii and we got the Wii u. I useto hype the gimmick controls with the bad games and it seems like the Wii u is going down the same path. Last gen graphics, gimmick controls

Yupp, overhyping has certainly ruined my enjoyment of several games in the past....but comparatively, it's so refreshing when you find a gem that receives little to no coverage and turns out to be great.

That's true, same thing with movies. Another area that is damaging on hyping up a game is showing it way too early, or in some cases just CGI trailers.

oh god the CGI trailer thing...It frustrates me so much. What's even worse is that the CGI trailers aren't even part of the game. Publishers hire outside studios to work on these, studios that have no involvement in the games' development. If it was at least part of the game's intro or something, I could be ok with it, but they're completely irrelevant..ehm..Dead Island... ...ehm! :)

I think so called journalist who write up all these fancy previews full of lies also add to the problem
Godmars290  +   974d ago
Omissions you mean. ME3 is the best example of that. Nevermind the ending, its several aspects of the game mechanics, things like no side quest management and limited discussion, which were really its problem. Previews never even touched upon obvious issues like that, just like they game the ending a free pass as well.

There's only one game I ever fell for that. Superman Returns in GameInformer..

Seriously, if you could dig that one up somewhere and read the wall to wall lies and screenshots from some super computer at the time.

Well, previews are technically nothing more than fleshed out fact sheets. Those who bs in their previews are certainly harming the games and stepping outside of proper, journalistic boundaries. They're supposed to be objective, but it's clear that some titles get completely exploited by the time they're released. A shame, really.

That's all this gen has really been. Talking up games which wot be released for years if ever. Then if they come out and aren't broken because they needed more dev time still they're are just plain underwhelming. They rarely live up to the hype.

Over hyping a game only leads to disappointment. Not hyping a game leads to great fun and surprises.
