IGN: As the first guys to get our hands on the new PlayStation 3 Super Slim, we naturally decided to unbox it so you guys can see what you're getting.
(PS3)
WTF is up on the cable? How is Sony not giving HDMI with this unit? And the top loading aspect would be problematic in my current setup, wish they could have kept the front loading bay but oh well. The size does make it attractive for sure...but I think my slim will keep its spot.
Not sure what the point of a 3rd whole new redesign is? I think the biggest factor was trying to come out with a sub-$200 system and from what i read the 12GB flash drive system is still over $200 and only available in Europe. Why only there?
It's almost as though they knew the Wii U was coming so they decided to come out with a new model and have a line-up of games to counter it such as LBP Kart Racing, Playstation Battle Royal, and a new Ratchet and Clank game. Plus these;
I don't think it looks good at all TBH.... ...it looks cheap and 'plastic'.
Absolutely HATE the top-loader instead of the cool 'loading bay', especially when you look at the speed at which it shoots open when it's lying down. That won't last long.
HDMI should be standard by now, I think everyone can agree on that.
Seriously NOT happy with this, considering I'll have to buy one of them in December when I move to Hong Kong :(
The 'Phat' is still the best design. So slick and sexy. Especially the white model.
My launch Phat has had no issues and it fits perfectly in my set up. I see no reason to "downgrade" to this model even though I do like the ultra slim appeal.
I would have thought this would have been cheaper then the slim....not too often a company releases a downgraded system with removed features and still charges the same price as their current model...
Take a look at the "ethernet cable" at about 39 seconds in. Is it an HDMI or a USB? It's sure as $h!t not an ethernet cable. The guy next to him looks like he's going to burst out laughing.
Great stuff IGN. It's good to see somethings don't change even when reality shows otherwise.
@LostDjinn You're right, that is not an ethernet cable. Looks more like the standard USB charger that comes for the DualShock controller, unless Sony is getting rid of USB cords to charge our controllers with... that is definitely not a ethernet cable.
Well im quite mad.I wanted either a price drop or backward compatibility (or both) and we get neither... Well more than likely they will drop the price holiday seasons. I do like the new design tho.
Its funny that people keep asking a question that is so obvious to answer.
"Why is the a smaller PS3 still the same price?"
Sony wants to make profit from their hardware, and with the redesign they are using less and cheaper materials. They are also using less packaging with smaller boxes and such.
If you look at how well the PS3 is selling every month, they obviously don't see the need to drop the price quite yet, and I don't blame them. The PS3 is currently the top selling home console, and has been the top selling console for the last 3 years, and I don't see why that would change in the near future. WiiU might sell well for the first 4 months, but once the rumors of the XBOX 720 and the PS4 start swirling around, the WiiU craze will be long gone.
yeah im happy with my current slim, the design looks so cheep, im not sure what sony were thinking but they had a great design with the current slim that still managed to have great features like the front loading disc drive, this new version is not attractive in any way.
and bringing back the old groove design from the ps2 days looks dated and ugly.
I'm guessing that their reasoning behind using very cheaply made parts, yet still keeping the exact same price as the previous PS3 Slim, is because they lost so much money on the PS3 and are trying to regain some of it back with a higher profit margin.
That's the only logical thing I can think of as their reasoning behind the PS3 Super Slim.
Yeah I don't see the point here. Yeah fair enough it helps Sony make more profits but for us gamers, it doesn't really add anything like the 360 Slim did.
Anyway, its not that big a deal. I don't really mind the looks that much but I've got a working PS3 so a redesign doesn't really benefit me.
Agree on the cable bit. Although I can get a "gold" plated HDMI 1.4 cable at my local Dollarama for $2, that argument just warrants the question: "If its so cheap, why can't they include one?".
But if you look at this version of the PS3 you'll see that Sony tried to cut as much cost on manufacturing it as possible. Just look at how ugly it is and that top tray design. I feel like we are back in the 90's when I look at this system.
So the whole point was to save as much money on each unit as possible for Sony and this is the result.
Probably because HDMI is not standard yet. Many people still use RCA cables and have non HD tvs, especially kids rooms where alot of these will end up. I just upgraded my sons tv from a tube to a flatscreen hdtv this past Christmas myself.
I think I know why they can't include one even though they're cheap.
Companies like to make it seem HDMI is expensive and the more expensive, the better. Including one without raising the price would question the true price of an HDMI. And then Monster would get mad with their 10x overpriced cables.
if you thought this was tl;dr
They want you to buy one so they don't dispute the true price of an HDMI.
The reason Sony doesn't include an HDMI cable. Is because they figure, there's a good chance you'll walk out with a nice shiny Sony branded HDMI cable. The profit margins on cables, are probably the highest in the electronic industry.
I have no idea way they do not ship with a HDMI. You would think it was a standard cable. I also find ugly. I am also surprised there is no price cut for it. I do like the disk loader
edit: like have smaller memory and cut the price. Possibly bundle some with a vita to promote cross play
At least you'll get more memory. That my make up for the price. I also agree with the disc loader I think it's pretty neat. I hope US gets a white one.
To make the console smaller and cheaper they've obviously had to sacrifice a couple of things. Mainly the cosmetics. It really doesn't look as nice as the last slim console and it's a little bit louder apparently. But for £215 and a 500GB hard drive I can't see new PS3 owners complaining. But I'm happy to stick with my current slim model for the time being.
And surely now retailers will drop the price of the older slims to make way for the new ones? Especially in time for Christmas.
It is a bit odd that Sony aren't supplying HDMI cables, but you can pick them up for a £5 these days.
some people may not have HDtv....so they are thinking well tube tv and flat screens are able to use this cord and therefore sell the system with the cord....some parents may not no nothing about the cord differences and buy the ps3 for their kids and turns out they cant play it because they still have a tube tv....i do believe that whenever ps4 comes out they might come with the hdmi cord...but it really isnt a big deal if it doesnt come with one...if they are so cheap why not just go buy you one yourself besides complaining about it
they may be sacrificing a little bit more. My friend has a SLIM and a FAT and he has told me certain games (happens more with earlier games) would lag on the slim and be fine on the fat. so it could be the way the inner workings are handled as well.
If you actually appreciate decent audio and have a headphone amp, most of those little devices need an RCA output plugged into them to come out straight from the PS3. In fact, there's an audio setup exactly for that.
So if you ask "WTF is up on the cable", they're a requirement for those who have decent headphones (or any simiarly not-so-crappy audio output). Which means they're not completly useless.
That said, is it really that hard to buy a $5 HDMI cable the moment you get your PS3? Just saying.
they have an optical out for better quality. Also people with decent sound systems will have a reciever and then you can do optical or HDMI which give you a better option then the standard Left and Right of a simple RCA. I think they give the RCA jack because most kids get their parents old TVs that aren't HD.
Some places in europe we get xmas presents on the evening of the 24, so imagine some kid gets this ps3 and find "oh dear theres no hdmi cable". Kid will be crying all night. And the next 2 days since the shops are closed........
that looks really ugly with them sudden grooves. top loader potentially more easier for it to get damaged.
Sony dropped the ball this gen with console designs orginal ps3 was nice glossy but way to big and fat. slim ps3 looks ok but nothing amazing just bog standard design. ill be fine with mine. super slim cheap plastic ugly looking console.
sony is last place in terms of design of consoles orginal xbox 360 white black look better then all three.
Best looking console and design in xbox 360 s that just looks amazing and sleek. Then goes to nintendo wii the blue light looks great.
too bad this this look somthing from the 80s and 90s.
compare the xbox 360 s pics modern design looks amazing! even the orginal xbox 360
I agree, Microsoft changed things for the better when they introduced the Xbox 360S. I guess Sony had to do what they had to do to make it cheaper. The design is ugly, so I'd have it behind a curtain when playing games or something. Lmao.
I like the grooves but I'm skeptical of the longevity of that sliding door. I wonder how long before the springs break and you need to slide it over manually.
The upside of the top loader though is that if it ever dies you'll never have a disc stuck inside and you can more easily clean the laser, should you ever need to.
the laser maybe easier to clean but also 100% more likely to get a fingerprint on it compared to old slot. Also i wonder if the disk will spin up with the door open
I agree with pretty much everything you said, minus the setup thing, because I probably don't have the same setup as you, lol.
I think I'll just buy the current Slim to replace my dead fatty. Sony has sacrificed too much to make this cheaper, imo, so rather than downgrade, I'll bite the bullet, reformat my drive (didn't back it up or take the precautions I should have) and throw my 700 gig into a brand new Slim V.1.
It's time to get Ready for the Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls. That's my main reason for buying a Slim V.1
if you do not own a ps3 by now you are probably an every once in a while casual gamer if you're considering this latest version.
And considering how majority of those looking into this ps3 are of that type they probably aren't up to date with TVs. Meaning including an hdmi cable would be pointless because most of those owners probably don't have an hdmi setup.
Sony has never given hdmi with new consoles, what if you dont have and hdtv? It will work with all types of tv's if you include the regular av cables. You would be alienating some of your customers if you only included an hdmi cable. Furthermore the whole point of the superslim model is cost cutting to provide playstations to the consumer at a lower buy in cost. Why would they throw in expensive cables if they are trying to reduce costs? Think before you talk, its less embarassing.
I realize at this point it is only saving them money on overhead to produce these as they are selling them for the same as the original slim, but im betting they have a price cut in like a month or so for the holidays. Bet they would rather see PS3 slims under christmas trees than WiiU's.
Yeah but... they didn't lower the price for consumers. And unless you are buying some top of the line HDMI cables...they are pretty dirt cheap these days.
Its a blu ray hd console.. I remember the days that that was all sony would talk about. What if you do have a hd tv? Sure it will work with the cables but your not exactly playing in hd or watching a movie in all its glory are you!?
Did i miss something? How much is the super slim? Is it cheaper for the consumer or sony?
also their AV port is proprietary, HDMI cables are universal so that makes them way cheaper to make/buy because they are good for every new piece of AV equipment and they will sell.
@Dlacy13g how is it problematic with your currnt set up?.. How much of a tight space is your ps3 in?..(you really shouldn't have game consoles tight at all) and despite thise being a top loader it slides left rather than flipping up
Its currently in a space in my entertainment center that has about 4 inches top clearance. Its got plenty of side ventilation just not much top space. It just wouldnt be ideal for me. Sure it could work but front loading would be much more practical.
Enough already! I love my PS3, but DAMN how many times are they going to redesign this thing? What makes SLIMMER better? It's going to go the same place it would've gone even if it was a little bigger. Where are you going to put it in between 2 books?
I thought I read the 12gb will have a proprietary hdd add on that is available the day the 12gb model releases.
This redesign, while I understand will increase Sony profits, is ugly as hell to me. Visually it's a step backwards imo, especially with no auto feeding disc drive. I'll be rocking my 160 gb slim until next gen.
Honestly who cares what it looks like if it does what its supposed to. the only things on my entertainment center is a tv a ps3 and my cable box. And not once has someone come in and said "Wow you got a nice looking playstation there, not one of those ugly slim models."
When I'm playing my video games I try not to focus on how my playstation looks so i dont really see the point.
"owners of the 12GB model will be able to connect a 2.5 inch SATA internal hard drive with use of an official Mounting Bracket, or opt for purchase of an official PlayStation 250GB internal HDD."
I'm not sure about that ridging or the flimsiness. I'm on the fence about the design, but smaller is always better (well that's what I like to tell myself anyway)
And run hotter. If you are going to put powerful hardware in there then in the first gen the case will always be bigger if for no other reason than power and cooling.
Personally I'd prefer if they just make it look like your typical stackable AV equipment. I don't need to it look like a game console, it's just going to sit amongst all the other home theater bits.
In my opinion the 2006/7 models where the best looking Ps3 models , the supper slim kind of reminds me of the Ps2 , it's probably the materials and everything like having to push the disk into the spinner etc ...
i'd prefer them to separate the electric box from the rest to prevent overheating so in the worst case i have to change the electric adapter and it'd have been much smaller than this, and i'd prefer a better design on top. Is it a trainee who made this at lunch time break seriously ? And what about the HDD ? Poor video!
I rather that sliding lid to the slot load primarily for the reason that if the PS3 YLOD's then you have to tear appart the slim or Phat PS3 to get your disk out of it like I did when my PS3 died a year ago.
When I got YLOD I just took the whole thing apart and took a heat gun to the Mobo/GPU/CPU per the instructions of a youtube video and now my 80GB phat PS3 is still chugging along. I assumed that I would end up getting a new one since it went YLOD so what did I have to lose if I ended up trashing the old one.
Not sure why everyone is like "I'm keeping my slim", this console obviously isn't designed with the purpose of all the current PS3 owners going out to buy another PS3. Its clearly Sony looking to get families and casuals involved with the PS3.
Its plastic look is going to appeal to kids and parents might be more willing to get their kids something like this. Surprising it isn't getting a price drop though, because the console itself has a cheap look to it.
I'll take that black piano finish over this mat finish but as you said, it's all opinion. But the first PS3 didn't look cheap, this does and that's a fact.
My opinion is that shiny or brushed look is the best.
The matte slim is not exiting at all, doesnt need to be but I found the 60GB ps3 to be the most sexy looking console til then and it still is.
The new slim looks real cheap though, it might be cool and reliable and all that, maybe exept for that slider. Dust that get heated up burns stuck after a while and will eventually cause problems. In an open tray dust will most certainly get in and there wont be much air moving it through so that could be a potential problem in dusty environments.
It looks cheap with the manual disk slider , but then again it was made to cut costs for both Sony and consumers .Il stick with my Ps3 slim and just upgrade the harddrive to 500 gig or more .
I think Sony are actually in a better position than ever because for the first time, this holiday, they aren't the most expensive on the market. For the same price as a basic Wii U you get 500gb and an awesome game(assassins creed 3), it's just way more value. People going out to buy gifts for the holidays will see this and they can essentially piggyback off of Nintendo's new console hype which is probably why they didn't feel the need to drop the price as I'm sure they would have if the Wii U was only $250.
I see no reason not to wait for the 500gb bundle though. You get double the hdd for only$30 more.
300 for a 6 year old console or 300 for a brand new 2012 released one.
Casual/mass of people isn't smart, they will go for new stuff, not looking at the value of the package.
Too bad Sony didn't put the 12GB PS3 Slim just under 200, because the mass of people sees 200 bucks as a very important psychological barrier for buying stuff.
Most casual people, parents, etc know nothing about game consoles or whether one's 6 years old or not. They may have seen PS3s in stores before(and perhaps they haven't) but don't know how old it is and when they see it has comparable graphics/features to the other one that's out they probably won't think anything of the age of the systems other than they're both out at the same time and one is cheaper.
You seem to forget that shop clerks perfectly tell the customers what is the newest device to get.
Besides that, you that parents don't know about it? Eh, kids tell their parents PERFECTLY what they want or what their friends have. Kids see the WiiUpgrades commercials with the tablet controller and will moan and cry their parents ears off.
There is one thing that could have made it a bit different, that is if SOny dropped the new PS3 slim under 200 bucks. Thats a magical psychological price barrier for possible buyers.
But now that its about the same price as the WiiUpgrade...
One thing to consider is that if Nintendo actually does have a supply shortage this holiday season then people could look to the PS3 as an alternative.
There's really no point in a sales clerk pushing a product they don't have in stock, and instead could go the other way and tell how the PS3 is a better value. Given the fanboyism that can be inherent in sales clerks, they could push the PS or the 360 instead regardless.
It didn't get a price drop, but it did get more value, so that's cool. For the same price as the current 320gb w/ a game bundles, you get a 500gb w/ a game bundle, so it's a better value. And you can't overestimate how important more hard drive space is on the PS3. I've got a 500 GB in mine now, and I'm constantly deleting demos and stuff to make room for more. 320 wouldn't even be close to enough for me, but 500 GB is enough if you don't keep demos around forever.
So including a bigger hard drive is a huge bonus.
Otherwise you'd want to go out and buy a bigger hard drive. Including 120, 250, or even 320GB hard drives, for my personal style of usage, is just a slap in the face, because you know you're paying extra for the hardware to be able to get that hard drive to begin with, but when you realize it isn't big enough, you have to go spend even more for a replacement, and then you've got a near value-less smaller hard drive with probably no use for it, and you have to transfer all your content over. Either you're inconvenienced by needing to transfer everything over (requiring a third hard drive for the backup!) later, or you have to plunk down the extra cash for a bigger drive right up front. Either way is not ideal.
Finally including a legit amount of hard drive space is a huge benefit over the previous model.
People seem to think this model is to get people to buy a new system, but its not. This is a way to cut cost and make profit. The ridges on the top serve a purpose. If you have a glossy cover on it you would be constantly wiping on prints when you loaded games which would lead to you tray possibly being broken. The ridges also give you something more to grip with as you close the tray. On the HDMI cable well people will just have to stop being so dang cheap and get a GOOD HDMI cable factory inserted cables are crap and always have been. I think its a smart more for future price cuts.
I can't believe people are still complaining about hdmi cables. I literally have 3 being unused around my house and ive been giving others away to friends for free cuz I have too many of them and out of all the hdmi cables i only bought 2 of them.
Anyone who doesn't like the PS3 4000 model look, buy the older 3000 model quickly.
I still think the original launch models with PS2 BC have the most stylish look because the surface is shiny with mirror metal plating around the console. The later revision models without PS2 BC changed the mirror metal plating to dull look.
does it really matter how it looks? tell me who looks at their ps3 when their playing a game or watching a movie on it..... the point of it now is to play the ps3 at a reduced cost, if you prefere the others then fine, you still have the option th buy those....if you wanted it to look less cheap, then your missing the point of why it was built
Definitely looks cheap, almost like a Chinese knockoff. The sliding top door seems weak and I don't like how it functions. I always buy new hardware revisions but this is one I will pass on. Plus it should have gotten a price drop. Yeah the HDD is bigger for the same price but I'd rather pay $200 for a 120gb or 160gb and upgrade to a bigger HDD later on if I need to. To the casual gamers, the Wii U is only $50 more for the basic model, is new hardware, plays their old Wii games, and uses their old peripherals. Missed opportunity there Sony.
The pricing allows Sony to maximize profits on units sold now, then lower the price and advertise it as such to coincide with the holiday season/Wii U launch.
The opportunity remains. We'll have to wait and see what Sony does with it.
Doesn't matter if people own an hdmi cable or not, its a matter of principle. At this point, with the "3rd generation" of the ps3, they should've added hdmi cables period.
As for the rest of the console, I, like plenty, think its ugly as hell and the cheapest crap I've ever seen. When I look at it I can't help thinking that if I sneeze over it I'll dismantle the whole thing -.-
i dont think it looks good at all and still cant see the reason for releasing it. the top loading tray is an bad idea (are they trying to bring back that nostalgic feeling of the betamax). 500gb is a nice addition but i still havent filled up my 250gb (believe me i'm trying). honestly if it was side by side next to the slim i would pick the slim, but if it is that much cheaper then it would tempting especially to those who havent got a ps3 or they have had one die on them recently as a replacement.
but honestly if you havent got a ps3 by now well...:)

Apple...
The problem here is not the shape of the console, it's the Fact that is more expensive than the current Slim PS3, for real WTH!?
no one mentioned that.

agreed. It's a usb. I would doubt sony perfected recharging by simply setting the controller on the top of the unit.
I wouldnt put it past them though, that could be a feature for the ps4. lol
As for the lack of hdmi cable. Yeah they arent expensive but they arent standard either. We know pretty much 98% of consumer TV's have RCA.
But 98% of consumers dont have HDTV.
Well more than likely they will drop the price holiday seasons.
I do like the new design tho.
What does lighter shipping weight and smaller dimensions mean for companies and charge the almost the same as when the items were bigger and heavier?
"Why is the a smaller PS3 still the same price?"

Current slim uses 200W.

I have already PS3 320GB, but I wil be getting this one aswell!
*Heads up* Just for shiz and giggles, I have preordered Wii U ZombiU :D
This model looks very cheap and it should be cheap to make so why not lower the price at least $50?
Is it a trainee who made this at lunch time break seriously ? And what about the HDD ? Poor video!
I had to constantly clean the lens on the PS1 because it would freeze sometimes.
Its plastic look is going to appeal to kids and parents might be more willing to get their kids something like this. Surprising it isn't getting a price drop though, because the console itself has a cheap look to it.
But when it comes time to grab a PS3 in 5 or 6 years, I'd be more inclined to this one.
I think, still the first design of the PS3 looked the best. Shouldn't have changed it.
I see no reason not to wait for the 500gb bundle though. You get double the hdd for only$30 more.
Casual/mass of people isn't smart, they will go for new stuff, not looking at the value of the package.
Too bad Sony didn't put the 12GB PS3 Slim just under 200, because the mass of people sees 200 bucks as a very important psychological barrier for buying stuff.
There's really no point in a sales clerk pushing a product they don't have in stock, and instead could go the other way and tell how the PS3 is a better value. Given the fanboyism that can be inherent in sales clerks, they could push the PS or the 360 instead regardless.
So why not Sony?
It doesn't bother me but I can see people being annoyed.
I still think the original launch models with PS2 BC have the most stylish look because the surface is shiny with mirror metal plating around the console. The later revision models without PS2 BC changed the mirror metal plating to dull look.
The opportunity remains. We'll have to wait and see what Sony does with it.
As for the rest of the console, I, like plenty, think its ugly as hell and the cheapest crap I've ever seen. When I look at it I can't help thinking that if I sneeze over it I'll dismantle the whole thing -.-
but honestly if you havent got a ps3 by now well...:)
