Yeah and it looks smart, when the rumours came out everyone didn't like the ridges, but I liked it :)

Will most likely pic this one up too.

Which would mean I have my dead phat :(

My wowrking slim

and then this new one which i think is pretty damn good looking but still it doesn't hold a candle to the phat desgin.

@stoneGazers Hey great opinion am glad you feel the wii is better but the reflectivness of the ps3 phat combined with the desgined curve i think is much btter looking. But thanks for the contrasting opinion.

are these units closed to users expandable hdd? I read the 12gb would use a dedicated hdd. It does not specify if it would be internal or external.

As for the models that include the hdd, it is assumed they are internal but now it would appear they are locked to those sizes.

Is that correct?

Less tech than the Wii U and still consume more power (watts). I already have a PS3. Absolutely no reason to invest more money in the same tech. Next investment will be the Wii U, till the PS4 comes around... then the PS3 gets traded in.
one2thr  +   1238d ago
And what does it have to do with Wii U?... There's a point being missed, in your thinking process about this system revision....
donman1  +   1238d ago

I am not sure why you cannot understand what I wrote. Its does not take much brain cells. So let me try this again in bullet points. Try and keep up.

* Sony had a revision of the PS3. I see no value in the revision if you already have a PS3

* I looked at the specs sheet of the new PS3 revision and I used the WiiU to makes a comparison of the fact the PS3 (old technology) still use more power (watts) than the WiiU (more advance technology).

* My third point is that I will consider doing away with my current PS3 when the PS4 is released.

Do you understand my point now?

Until there are shipping Wii U games that are ported from PS3/X360 running side by side with PS3 or X360, it's only hype from Nintendo.

Ever wonder why Nintendo is very selective in showing Wii U games that are ported from other consoles? They refused to show the graphics on Wii U in details compared to PS3 or X360 than showing the tablet controller.

i dont really understand your point at all, simply because there really is none.

This ps3 revision is likely sony's attempt at reducing production costs, increasing efficiency of the unit with respect to older units and reducing the price for new adopters.

it baffles me that you think this is somehow aimed at existing ps3 owners as an upgrade, and your comparison with the wiiU wattage is just plain nonsense. of course new tech is more powerful but its also much more efficient as a direct result of it being more cutting edge, that's where the research goes. modern chips are evolving to be much more efficient so why would you expect this revision to be any more energy efficient than a next gen system.

i'll reiterate an above point, let's keep it classy.

I'm curious to see what the 12gb model is priced at. I imagine we'll see it at $199, but $149 would be preferable to give the industry overall a much needed boost.

As I pointed out before, you can certainly draw parallels with what happened with the PS2. The PS2 launched March, 2000. In 2004 they announced the PS2 had reached 70 million consoles sold, and in November 2004, almost 5 years in they unveiled the PS2 slim with a price of $149 and 70 million ended up not even being the halfway point in the PS2's lifetime sales. At 5 years, 9 months the PS2 had hit 100 million proving the $149 price point to be the sweet spot last gen.

By contrast the PS3 certainly faced an uphill battle with it's initially pricing, competition and the worst economic downturn in a generation staring down households. This holiday season will be 6 years for the PS3 since it's initial, limited launch (if you remember it wasn't available worldwide until March 2007) and it looks set to pass the 70 million mark this holiday season.
The PS3 took it a bit longer to reach this milestone than the PS2 but in a declining market, the PS3 seems to be the most resilient console hanging on to more sales year over year than it's competitors (Microsoft's last financial updated showed 360 sales down 43% for the first 6 months of the year compared to the same period last year, and Wii sales have dropped off a cliff ahead of the Wii-U's launch).

We all saw what effect the PS2 slim and $149 price point meant to the PS2's long term success, but the market is different. Would a $199 PS3 have the same sales impact? Would a $149 PS3? The industry in general could certainly use some stimulus, but is this enough? Or will the Wii-U be the factor that provides the much needed boost?

I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Marquis_de_Sade  +   1238d ago
At 229 Euros, the 12GB is way too expensive.
ABizzel1  +   1237d ago
12GB $199 ($149 - $179 would be better)
250GB $249
500GB $299
xtremeimport  +   1237d ago
I dont understand their thinking in not dropping the price...maybe the system is cheaper, but just because the bundle i makes it more? idk.
traditionally a redesign comes with a price drop, without a price drop whats the point??
Darrius Cole  +   1237d ago
They probably want to sell the existing stock first. They will probably drop the price in a month or two.

Tuxmask55  +   1238d ago
Totally. Especially the blackness. It's a huge departure from the previous two PS3 units.

Read the article. Both black and white models will be made available. If you want more than that, get it skinned or painted.
DiRtY  +   1238d ago
I actually liked the fat PS3 the most. It just looked powerful. Too bad the first games did not show what it was capable of. It even had the most features (PS2, Linux).

I don't get the point of removing features though. How can a 6 years old console be more advanced than a console from next week?
HammadTheBeast  +   1238d ago
It's not that it was advanced, it just cost about $700 with taxes and such, and Linux created a major flaw in security, which would've basically killed online play.
MagicAccent  +   1238d ago

I pressed the agree...
button because you're right about it not coming don to $99.99. But you're wrong when it comes to global economics. The euro is the highest form of currency in the world followed by the Canadian, and then the dollar. The US dollar was almost on par with the euro back in the '90s when America's economy had a surplus. While things aren't ideal I believe we are way better off then when Bush was in office.

If it was indeed being tested in Brazil (either SCEA or Sony Brasil submitted it) and Europe (SCEE must have been the one responsible), my guess is that this is going to be worldwide IF it actually come to be... Maybe as a cheaper model closer to holidays, just to rain on Nintendo's parade! LOL

Adva  +   1238d ago
They probably want to get more profit out of the new units for a little while.

Perhaps around December they will either drop all prices by $50 or introduce the 12GB version for $199 while other units will stay as is.
Hicken  +   1238d ago
If that VGChartz report is to be believed, their current situation is as the highest selling console in the world this year.

Besides, this still doesn't prevent them from dropping the price at the holidays.

Edit: It's selling well enough. May as well say the 360 isn't selling well in Japan, despite it doing well enough elsewhere. Worldwide sales will always trump figures for one region.

It is when it is convenient for Hicken. Otherwise, it is VGChartz! XD
SDF Repellent  +   1238d ago
Hicken, I dare you to use VGchartz as a reliable source when it is in Sony's favor. At this point in the life cycle of the X360/PS3, who gives a rats about console sales, it is all about games and both systems has 99% third party games but Microsoft definitely won this year with a blockbuster known as Halo 4.
cyclonus007  +   1238d ago
They are waiting for MS to make their move. Every time Sony drops price, MS follows suit and I'm sure MS won't be dropping price until after Halo 4, around the time the WiiU is released aka Thanksgiving in the US.
Knight_Crawler  +   1238d ago
Ah no...Sony has dropped there price twice and MS has not budged - The 360 is long over dew for a price drop.
cyclonus007  +   1238d ago
@Knight_Crawler When the Slim PS3 came out MS not only dropped price but they released a slimmer 360 the next year. A redesigned PS3 with a new color & bundled with games puts them in a better position this holiday to cut price whenever.

Looks better than the current PS3 but those grooves in the middle were unnecessary a matte finish would have been better those grooves will also be a pain to keep clean and did Sony replace the elegant grab disc tray with a cheap open lid drive? I wish Sony would go back to their colored PlayStation logo as well the all white logo is bland and takes away the feel of a gaming console.
snowman2149  +   1238d ago
They REALLY need a 12gb $99 model..that would slow down Wii U sales by A LOT.
colonel179  +   1238d ago
They will never sell the PS3 at $99. Not at this time though, for the PS3 to hit that price the PS4 will be at least 1 year old.

The cheapest the PS3 would get is $150, which it should be by now. Sony made a mistake by not lowering the price at least to $200 for Christmas.

People without a PS3 will go to a store and see the Wii U at the same price, and will choose it just for the fact that it's a new console, and better (even if it's not by much) than the PS3. If Sony had lowered the price to $199.99 at least it would get a better chance to sell better this holiday.

rainslacker  +   1238d ago
I was really expecting to see one come in at $199 or less in response to the Wii U, although I did expect a high capacity model for $299 to make it seem current with Wii U's in not outdated and worth just as much on the market. I think the 12GB version would have come in at $199, but I guess it's not coming to NA?

Edit @ below:

That's my point though. It doesn't really matter about added value when going up against a new system. Have you ever talked to an average consumer about storage space? They have no idea what the advantage is of more disc space, or why they might need it. For the $299 model it's the same price as the regular Wii U, so people would likely opt for the newer system on the market, just because it's newer. to the average consumer newer == better.

The $249 one may serve it's purpose in this regard though, however a 12GB model could have been a great selling point for Sony over the holiday when up against a $299 Wii U.

LKHGFDSA  +   1238d ago
it's already $50 cheaper than the Wii U, should be good enough. (though I know what you mean.)
colonel179  +   1238d ago
They kept the same price with more HDD Space, but they should have lower the price. People don't care about the value as much as a lower price. We all saw the proof in the launch PS3. Outstanding value, but nobody cared at $599.99.

Also, the 12 Gb for Europe or Japan is €200 so it doesn't sound cheap either. By this time, the PS3 should be the same cost as the Xbox 360 at the very least.

IMO, this is a bad move from Sony, but I am not an expert in marketing.

When you figure in the cost savings of a blu-ray player, the included acceptable hard drive storage. If I was in position to buy one or the other I'd pick the ps3
Ju  +   1238d ago
Me, too. For $199. But maybe Sony is waiting how the US market reacts. They can simply do this here when needed with "lowering" the price because it simply isn't available, yet.

I am curious what the HDD mounting bracket will cost. Should be built in already. But probably $10. More would be ridiculous. Rather less.

rainslacker  +   1238d ago
This article is saying that the only upgrade option for the hard drive on the 12GB model will be a dedicated that I assume they mean proprietary add on peripheral similar to Xbox's one. This seems at odds with how the other PS3 models worked, and no NA release for it.:( All that and no significant price drop is rather disappointing.
LKHGFDSA  +   1238d ago
It's not really odd when you consider the Wii U will doing it. and the two consoles are now competing.
rainslacker  +   1238d ago
The Wii U actually has two rather lackluster storage options imo. But they aren't asking you to use proprietary and expensive accessories to enhance that storage. They're giving the consumer the choice and asking those that want more storage to bear the extra cost. Sony originally had a standard HD with decent storage options and then you could bear the cost of adding if you wished to. Not being proprietary you could find inexpensive options for to upgrade.

If this was a competition issue then Sony would keep that choice available for their new models. It also leads me to believe that the hard drives aren't upgradable in the other two models, so you may not be able to just swap out with a bigger hard drive like a lot of people were hoping.
Ju  +   1238d ago
Sony said ANY HDD will do - or their 250GB dedicated add on. I presume, Sony's kit includes the mounting braked, while you'd have to buy this extra to add your own storage. Nice that it's internal. No external case or space required.

BTW. Does the WiiU come with Wiggle controller and Nunchuk?

If you can use any hard drive with the new slims then I apologize for saying it couldn't, but I could only go off what the articles were saying. Maybe something was lost in translation, or a convenient omission to stir up trouble on the media's part.

As to the Wii U wiggle and nunchuk, no they don't. Nor does it come with a pro controller. Accessories will always be around to sell, but things like dedicated peripherals such as a hard drive marked up well beyond retail value is a step in the wrong direction.

Anyhow if you can use any hard drive, thanks for clearing that up for me and others.:)

Yep it sounds like Sonys doing what ms is doing with the hard drives. Whats funny is sony fans have been shoving this down 360 owners throats since launch. It should be fun to see how this one gets spinned. What im wondering if the hard drive is going to be proprietory on all the new models or just the 12. If it fits on one it will fit on the new design so i would not be surprised as sony is trying to make money on he accessories and will be charging for what I believe alot more in the future.
