Xbox, Not Windows, Is The Future Of Microsoft - Says Steve Ballmer

The Xbox, the Zune, Windows Phone: in ten years, these products will be the model for Microsoft, as it evolves away from a software company into a hardware-and-services provider. At least, that’s the corporate vision outlined by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer this weekend.

Maybe they know that windows 8 is crap?

ChunkyLover532099d ago (Edited 2099d ago )

When you have 90+% of the market its hard to really believe what he is saying. It does say that they have a lot of faith and trust in the Xbox brand. They have come a really long way in a short period of time.

Also, just because they are releasing Windows 8 doesn't mean everyone will use it, I'll stick with Windows 7 because I think its beast.

I cannot wait to see what innovations we get with the Xbox 720, I really wish they'd announce it sooner rather then later, but I know it wont be announced before Halo 4 launches.

*Edit*
@Captain Qwark 9
I am not against Windows 8, I'll probably get it eventually. I hear if you have Windows 7 you can get it upgraded for pretty cheap. I'd just like to try it out for a while first.

Captain Qwark 92099d ago

i love windows 7 too but after using my windows phone for so long i have faith windows 8's new look will be pretty great. im excited to see the future of ms although im sure windows will continue to be its primary money maker for many years to come still

I'm guessing the main reason for this is the Xbox SmartGlass stuff, which it's obvious they are hoping will take off massively. I guess it could, but the demo at E3 seemed like the current features were a little redunant.

Clarence2099d ago

INNOVATIONS from M$? Yeah ok. Please tell me what they've innovated.

ALLWRONG2099d ago

Clarence you like those Trophies?
Do you have a tablet, or want one?
You like matchmaking?
Do you like your dlc marketplace, movies, music, social apps, video streaming, even HD consoles?
Do you like the technology PC gaming has brought to console?
Do you like that robust easy to use (windows based) UI that comes with every device?
Direct X?

Bigpappy2099d ago

M$ has the PC market and is not going to fight for tablet.

Xbox is where they see opportunity for the most growth. They are not only aiming at the current crop of gamers. They want to appeal to the masses. Don't expect them to fight clean. They will do what ever it takes.

nukeitall2099d ago (Edited 2099d ago )

@ChunkyLover53:

The performance increase in Windows 8 alone is enough to get me to upgrade, let alone all the other nice features.

Remember when people used to say Windows XP is all I need, and the same people are probably saying "I'm sticking with Windows 7" even though it is just Windows Vista re-skinned!

I have been using Windows 8 daily for several 3-4 months now and it has been a great experience. I am really looking forward to MS Surface Pro.

If you think Windows 8 sucks, I would like to know what specifically.

BitbyDeath2099d ago

'Remember when people used to say Windows XP is all I need'

That was when Vista came out, people were happy to move on when Windows 7 arrived.

Vista =/= Windows 8

'If you think Windows 8 sucks, I would like to know what specifically.'

For me it's basically the look and feel.

I'm not liking Metro, it needs to be far more customisable to be of better use. Even then its just like someone slapped a hundred icons to your desktop.

Also the ribbon in Windows Explorer, nobody liked it in Office why is this still around and now in Windows Explorer.

I'm sticking with Windows 7, no reason to move from it.

nukeitall2098d ago

@BitbyDeath:

"That was when Vista came out, people were happy to move on when Windows 7 arrived."

There is almost no difference between Windows 7 and Vista other than mostly a few tweaks under the hood and some minor things. Yet people "are now happy to move on when Windows 7 arrived"?

Point being, this is something people will again accept once they see the benefits.

"For me it's basically the look and feel."

That is a preference, and doesn't really make something suck other than to you at best. I expected something more along the lines of "my start screen is cumbersome", not "the colors or icons aren't to my liking"....

"I'm not liking Metro, it needs to be far more customisable to be of better use. Even then its just like someone slapped a hundred icons to your desktop."

What sort of customization would you like that isn't present?

To me, the start screen is far more usable now, because I can quickly glance at the icons and get information. Otherwise, it works exactly the same way it did before, just significantly faster and it is better at finding apps (that I'm looking for) instead of random files. The only complaint I have is that the applications tends to overpopulate the start screen. This should be hand picked by the user, not thrown up by the applications.

"Also the ribbon in Windows Explorer, nobody liked it in Office why is this still around and now in Windows Explorer."

The ribbon was disliked by the millions of users that had been using MS Office for ages and refused to learn a new way to use it. Most "new" users found the ribbon far easier to use than the old toolbar.

"I'm sticking with Windows 7, no reason to move from it."

Your choice, but I have found very little to dislike about Windows 8. The performance gain is immense, and the ability to load my entire profile that is complete with settings from the cloud is a godsend. The versatility across devices is also nice, so I'm upgrading as fast as I can.

"The Xbox, the Zune, Windows Phone: in ten years, these products will be the model for Microsoft"

The Zune = DEAD
Windows Phone = Very Very Poor Sales, pretty much Dead
Xbox = Better have more Exclusives, Multiplats are not gonna cut it Next Gen.
Windows 8 = SUCKS
MS Surface tablet = is NOT an iPad or Galaxy Note killer

If that's the case then in Ten years Microsoft will be hurting.

So Windows 9 (Windows XP v3.0) will have to once again save Microsoft!

MadMen2099d ago

I was with you until

Xbox = Better have more Exclusives, Multiplats are not gonna cut it Next Gen.
Answer:
Its successful regardless, your point here is moot

Windows 8 = SUCKS
Answer:
Not out to masses, opinion does not count as a statistic

MS Surface tablet = is NOT an iPad or Galaxy Note killer
Answer:
Why does it need to be? Products of success co exist

mcstorm2099d ago

I can see your a fan of MS then.
The Zune = DEAD (Turning into Xbox Music) Also have you ever used a Zune device or Zune Pass?
Windows Phone = Very Very Poor Sales, pretty much Dead (Wrong it is far from dead. Sales are not as High as the Iphone or Samsung sales but Nokia sales are picking put fast and with the Lumia 920 coming to the market later on this year it wont be long before Windows Phone is 3rd in the Market behing IOS and Android)
Xbox = Better have more Exclusives, Multiplats are not gonna cut it Next Gen.(360 already has a lot of Exclusives just depends on what type of game you like)
Windows 8 = SUCKS (Have you used it as it beats Windows 7 in more or less every performance test)
MS Surface tablet = is NOT an iPad or Galaxy Note killer (I don't see why it needs to be a killer but it will give them both a run for there money as its a Windows pc made for a tablet and at around £200 it could pickup a lot of sales as the Ipad and Android tablets still need a pc/laptop at the other end for printing storage ect Surface or any windows tablet don't need this)

The way I see it 10 years ago was when MS messed up in a big way with Windows Vista, Wimo, Office 2007.

If you look at what MS are doing now there products now work very well. Windows Phone is one of the best and usable OS's in the smart phone market. Xbox is a very good media hub as well as a good gaming console.

MS have needed to bring all there devices together and have less devices to do the same thing.

Having a Phone, Games console, PC, Tablet, Ultrabook, Skydrive, Bing, Skype, Xbox Music, Xbox Video all syncing as one service gives a lot of people a reason to pick the Windows Eco system just like people have picked the google or Apple one.

I don't hate Apple or Google in anyway and I think having Apple, Google and Microsoft all pushing each other for each others Market share gives us all a better choice and keeps each other on the ball as if anyone drops it they could lose a big chunk of there market share.

tokugawa2099d ago

ati elite yawn.. typical nonsense spouted on here.

makemyteapunk2099d ago

At least MS knows how to run a profitable business, unlike your fav company.

They have submitted to Valve taking Linux to be the gaming platform of the PC. This is news I expected much sooner than this.

The thought that Microsoft would try to promote PC gaming. WTH are you thinking!

greenpowerz2099d ago (Edited 2099d ago )

Yes because windows 8 will be the last OS. That's your Sony loving opinion that it is crap.

What he said has more to do with a radical implication of how advanced and futuristic the Next Xbox will be and the ones that follow.

Future Xbox's will be essentially MSFT's own PC-ish platform for all their products. That is how the Xbox platform will be leading MSFT(Multi media Home theater PC owned by MSFT)

PS3 fanboys attacking windows 8 as if Steve was talking about windows 8 only and with fanboys pretending windows 8 is the last windows to come out, some how implying the future only shares a window of the life span of windows 8 is moronic at best.

fermcr2099d ago (Edited 2099d ago )

"Xbox, Not Windows, Is The Future Of Microsoft - Says Steve Ballmer"

If that's so, then they better start purchasing (or creating) more studios... or are they thinking that releasing a Halo every year will make their console sell more then Sony's and Nintendo's.
... OR are they thinking to make the next xbox essentially a media center and not a game console ?

ChunkyLover532099d ago

They own over 20 studios right now, they just opened 2 new studios within the last week.

Just because they haven't gone out and bought up a bunch of established studios doesn't mean they don't have any. Most of their studios have been busy with Xbox 720 games, they opened 5 new studios in 2011 alone, including one in Vancouver that is working on the first ever AAAA title. They also bought Twisted Pixel, which was a huge plus, I love everything they've done.

Microsoft has had a ton of new IP's this generation, the only reason people complain is because the console generation went on too long, Microsoft has most of their developers working on next gen, the rest on current and XBLA games.

I'm surprised and happy that were still getting AAA blockbuster games for the Xbox 360 7-8 years into its release. No other console had titles and support like that, that far into its cycle.

DeadlyFire2098d ago

The problem I am seeing is that most of the future of PC games according to that statement means Xbox 3 ports to PC instead of any PC to console ports. That is a big concern for the PC audience.

Now sure Microsoft might be opening more studios, but how many are dedicated towards a new next generation game IP.

First party studios from MS that are possibly not Kinect or XLBA centric. I see are these.
343 - Halo
Lionhead - Fable, Black and White.
Rare - Perfect Dark, Banja-Kazooie, Viva Piñata
Turn 10 - Froza
Microsoft studios London -
Microsoft studios Vancouver -
Microsoft studios Victoria -
Platform Next Studios -

Now even so at 8 studios possibly working on 1-2 next gen games it would work out quite well. Knowing Microsoft's history. I already have a picture of what is to come out. I do expect 1 new IP from somewhere. I am betting Vancouver might have it. It is nice to see if it does.

Well, they finally admit that they left the backdoor open and Google stuck it in. They cant recover from the business they started. BAD, BAD BUSINESS my friend.

Especially since its dubious where Xbox and consoles period are going.

TongkatAli2099d ago

No offense to any of his fans, but I completely loathe this guy. Michael Patcher is a saint when it comes to predictions compared to this guy and he has to be taking coke or crystal meth.

Microsoft would be way way way better off without this guy.

wishingW3L2099d ago (Edited 2099d ago )

true that. Ballmer always says and does the craziest things ever. The guy is nuts.

http://www.youtube.com/watc... LoLz

AngelicIceDiamond2099d ago

Hes charismatic, nothing wrong with that. Would rather have somebody act like a frat boy than a super strict buissness guy lol.

But then again, I do wonder what he does when he gets a high score in a Kinect game. 0_O

r212099d ago

Im sorry but im pretty sure windows is their main profit. Also, where in the article does he say that quote?

greenpowerz2099d ago

You have a nasty brain. Your thoughts make me sick.

abzdine2099d ago

sorry you must be uglier than he is :) No offense! or is he someone from your family ?
