Capcom: Developer Review

Discussing Capcom's actions as a developer/publisher this gen, both the good and the bad. (Capcom, Dev, Industry, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360)

I would have given them 0/10 if not for Dragon's Dogma, but a lack of a numerical score helps people decide how awful Capcom is on their own scale.

Capcom used to be one of the best publishers out there back in the day, you could expect nothing but perfection in all practicality similar to Squaresoft. Where did it all turn around? I guess in those times it was the golden age for them, either that or we as gamers were lucky to have been exposed to such great publishers.

Yeah, this gen has really done a number on Japanese devs. They are following the footsteps of EA and Activision far too much and they've lost their identity. It's the fault of the idiot media that made Japanese devs believe what they were doing wasn't what we in the West wanted.

Hopefully, though unlikely, Japan will reclaim it's identity in the gaming market next gen.

It all started to turn around when video game development started to mimic the development methodologies of other industries. They are just not compatible and suits have a hard time understanding that.

No matter how you look at it, the bad outweighs the good.
DragonKnight  +   924d ago
Very true. An entire article can be written about the bad, and not much can be said about the good. It's pretty hard to find to tell the truth.

Well there was a time when Capcom would release a solid, great game after game. Seemed like back than the customer came first more so than now or that there were a lot more gamers within the company making a better impact on the games that were released. While no publisher is perfect Capcom sure came close to it before.

i totally agree with him about Capcom's bad business practices and their stupid decision for rebooting dmc by mediocre dev but all that aside.... Capcom imo is one of the reasons why this gen didn't suck, thanks to them we have
RE: Revelations
Dragon's Dogma
SF4
Monster Hunter
SFxT "yeah i know what everyone is thinking but it was a great game!"
Ghost trick
Lost Planet
these are some of the best this gen, and next month my GOTY will be released RE6!

Here's the thing though SF4 is a symptom of the problem. 4 versions for one game? That's ridiculous. Plus, most people still consider SF3 to be the superior game. I personally believe Dragon's Dogma is really the only good thing to come from Capcom this gen.

I'm with j-blaze!

Add to that Dead Rising, Mega Man 9, Bionic Commando Rearmed, Zack and Wiki, Final Fight Double Impact.. the entire Phoenix Wright series.. like, the list just goes on and on and on. One or two good games my hole!

SF4
Great game, one of the best fighters this gen.
Vanilla SF4: bad balancing, great character choice because they listened to the fans. (Cammy,Sakura,Dan)

Super SF4
The best iteration of SF4. Listened to the fans about the characters, balanced the game to where you can be really good with any character, great online. simply the best.

SSF4 AE
Ruined it. They added another akuma and another Ryu. Added Yun and Yang and made them too good. Unbalanced the game to where only high tier characters would win (Yun,Viper,Fei Long). Added unnecessary buffs to Zangief.

SSF4 AE 2012
Apology edition. By this time they were trying to revive a dead dog. The game died for me in AE and its sad because SSF4 was such a great game

SFxT
Copy paste characters. did not listen to the fans about the characters we wanted. On-disc DLC. Horrible balancing. Did not cater to Teekken fans. Tekken characters were not loyal to their Tekken counterparts. decent online. No hype in tournaments.

Capcom started out good but they just completely messed up their way of making games. I mean they cancelled megaman legends 3. what kind of BS is that?

My grade for Capcom this gen as far as fighting games.

4/10

As an overall company.
6/10

After Capcom lost the Fab 4, the company went to the dark side........

To be fair, Capcom has yet to disappoint.

Dragon's Dogma,
Asura's Wrath,
Monster Hunter,
Zack Adventure,
DMC 4
Street Fighter 4 AE
SFXT

all has been great games in my book this gen. You can say they have bad business practices, but Capcom quality has been consistently good since the NES period. They know how to make great games. The fact that they are supporting the PC is a big plus for me too.

Some of you have different reasons to be angry at Capcom but you have to be fair.
