Iwata mentioned that Wii U features a "GPGPU" numerous times throughout today's conference, but what exactly is it? And why should we be excited?
(Tech, Wii, Wii U)
Most people I've seen have been speculating at a E6760, which makes sense. It's AMD's first embedded GPGPU that launched last year, and it's performance is essentially a 4850, for those interested.
Its a low end PC which is locked down lol, just like rest of the consoles.
I could make a PC for 500 usd that would rofl stomp this and be open to whatever i would like to install on it. Imo this is pretty darn over priced for being a locked down low end PC.
@therealspy he is excited because it is not a budget card lol. Most gpgpu are not integrated like soc systems. Plus this means way less bottlenecks. Or it could mean it has a gpgpu and a power7 CPU all coupled together with edram lol! The ndas are not up yet so who knows! No one has cracked the chip open. Ethier way it would be a smart design and physics will work great now! AI path finding can be more creative now!
Funny console fans are now getting excited over 4 year old tech.
4850 was mid range tech back in 2008, sure it was way more powerful than the PS3 or the Xbox 360, however it was strictly mid range. For todays standard, 4850 would get beaten by 100usd GPUs. Why would anyone in their right mind pay 300-400usd for such old tech. Specially when a PC for 500usd could be made with a GPU as new as a GTX560 (that is alteast 2 gens ahead of 4850).
Dont believe me check this rig out at tomshardware.com:
Imo console gaming has gone from cost effective to rip off all in one gen. Assuming someone already has stuff like a casing, DVD drive, HD etc, then the above PC could probably be made for under 400usd, plus you get to maintain BC with any games you would have bought previously. Console gaming looks sad all of a sudden.
it's not really that surprising, coming from nintendo... i'm sure we're all going to hear the "gameplay is more important than graphics" argument now knowing that the wii U is running off of antiquated tech, which virtually confirms the fact that the wii U is not going to be that much better than the PS3/X360.
sure, 1GB of RAM for games is good, but i don't think it's going to be enough to blow what we're currently seeing on the PS3/X360 out of the proverbial water.
but before you start calling console gaming a rip-off, we're still waiting on what sony/MS are offering with their next gen systems, which will undoubtedly destroy the wii U in terms of specs.
and PC gaming isn't the utopia you're making it out to be... sure you could build a high-end PC for not a lot of money, but then you have to deal with hardware/software compatibility and all that other driver nonsense that can cause problems.
eidt: and you'd think nintendo would have included a HDD on their new system?? if they ever expand their digital distribution, 8 or 32GB of flash memory isn't going to get you very far...
Gameplay has always been more important than graphics. It's not anything new. The only people I have ever seen make the argument that graphics are the most important thing are Sony fans who say that if it isnt the best, it isnt worth their time. I'm guessing that now that we know for sure Wii U is the most powerful console out, or will be that suddenly graphics don't matter? Kinda like your post.
I agree that gameplay is more important than graphics always. But it isn't just idiot Sony fans that have said the opposite of that. I've seen idiot fanboys from all corners of the gaming universe make that retarded claim so let's be a big boy and not focus on one group. :)
"and PC gaming isn't the utopia you're making it out to be... sure you could build a high-end PC for not a lot of money, but then you have to deal with hardware/software compatibility and all that other driver nonsense that can cause problems."
Lol dude, this isnt 1995 any more. In this day and age windows updates itself, there hardly ever are any crashes, Clients like Steam keep games patched and updated automatically. About the only update users do have to do is the Graphics driver update every other month or so (even that isnt really required, its a bit like console firmware updates except its upto you when you want to update its not forced on you).
Clearly you havent been gaming on PC which is why bring up the hardware/software compatibility issue, i would say it was much of an issue when games were based on Dos, or when GPUs used different standards such as (opengl, 3DFX Glide, Direct3d). In this day and age not so much.
some people are b!tching for no reason i dont recall people comparing the ps2 or xbox to the pc. and some of you use to say that a pc should never be compare to a game console since they dont use there power the same way and dont require the same amount of power either
People seem to think that Hardware means GREAT SOFTWARE....it doesn't. It has EVERY thing to with the publisher and developer. For example Sony and Bluray. Yes Bluray is very much need to create games like Uncharted, Heavy Rain and Killzone etc, but it would mean pretty much nothing if a developer like Kojima didn't max it out, or GT5 used the full 50GB and had over 1000 cars! OR Killzone 2 having 3 to 4GIG LEVELS!
Those things TOGETHER are what made that happen. Nintendo is not really going to use most of that crap in the same repespects some of you think they will. On top of that, 3rd parties won't waste time trying to "max" out a system they can't even port to.
Nice GPU....six people care. It has nothing to do with GPU, it actually has everything to do with WHO is going to use such a GPU, heres a hint NOT 3RD PARTY PUBLISHERS! Lets waste time maxing out a game on Wii U OR making it maxed out on PS4, PC and 720 and profit. I mean really? LMFAO! We all know Next Gen starts with PS4 and 720.
To gamers, Next gen is more then about timing. So....how you guys like NEXT GEN! Have you all played the PS Vita...? Its next gen you know. LOL!
Plus the WiiU fitted with 2GB of memory for gaming... So far very impressive specs. Nintendo has surprise me this far... no incremental upgrade like their previous console cycle. I will be watching the live Nintendo press conference which start at 10am. One of three sites to watch it is.. http://www.nintendo.com/wii...
Its an incremental upgrade to PS3 and 360 for sure.
Wii U isn't going to be doing anything vastly beyond what the current generation can achieve, or anything beyond what a 4 year old gaming PC system can accomplish.
It might be massively faster than Wii, but then Wii isn't the benchmark for console performance. 360 and PS3 are.
1GB is sad, IMO. Basic PC's run at least 8GB nowadays. You can buy 8GB of solid RAM for $35-$40.
The Wii was a gen behind in hardware and it looks like WiiU will be the same. If nothing else, the WiiU will only be slightly better than the Xbox or PS3. I wouldn't call it next gen though.
You're missing the point about RAM. The 1GB of RAM for the Wii is most likely 1GB of RAM including VRAM dedicated solely to gaming. Which is about the same as low-mid ranged GPU's today. Good enough for decent 1080p and more than enough for 720p games.
PS3 has 256MB of VRAM while 360 has 512MB.
Its only recently with the 7000 series GPUs and Nvidia 600s that 2-3GB of VRAM is the norm for upper range PC GPUs.
So you cant really compare the two seeing as how PC uses RAM for everything, not dedicated to just gaming.
Any AMD mobile GPU supporting OpenCL could be a GPGPU as well really. Would not take much to make it one.
AMD 7870M for example is kinda similar to power as the 4850 at 1024 Gflops. AMD 4850 has 1000 Gflops. Max TDP is 45. Although might not be that exact GPU. Around 1000 Gflops is about my maximum of performance I would expect from Nintendo and its not too bad for me to shy away from the console.
Its a very interesting path to go down. As we could see a bit more from next-gen consoles than expected if they are all going down the same path with it.
"...it just doesnt happen. Unless you're absolutely pathetic and have absolutely no life."
You act like being pathetic and having no life is out of the question here. This IS the internet we're talking about, after all. I don't want to piss off Shok though, in case he really does have a ton of N4G accounts and starts raining down his bubble fury upon me.
I've been making sense in my posts on N4G, or at least have tried my best to, for years, and have yet to receive one extra bubble, lol. Well, I used to have more bubbles, but then N4G revamped and reset their bubble system, and I got reset back down to 3. :(
I don't really think it's easy to add bubbles to one account via multiple accounts. The mods can track single ip addresses and they're the one responsible for adding or removing a bubble no matter how many votes you get.
Do you guys realize that a 4850 has a 1000 GFLOPS performance? That's almost 5x the GFLOPS performance of the 360's and PS3's GPU. It may be 2008 but it's still a very strong GPU in comparison to last gen.
Will the 720 and PS4 GPU's be stronger? Sure, but really could you complain with a x5 performance increase from the PS3?
4850 with its gimicky numbers doesnt relate into performance. Theoretically yes, and for folding yes. But the 1000gflops is offset and downgraded graphics performance and decreased shader effectiveness.
4850 isnt anything to talk about, its low end stuff today. Stop trying to push your 'snake oil' bs about video card-hardware, the 4850 was worse then the nvidia counterpart. Its nothing ground breaking and to be honest they will be using drastically newer technology then the outdated 4850.
You clearly have no grasp of technology aside from reading of articles; where is your experience with it? I have both and know you clearly are speaking from a point of view of a console centric user; you should chill out a bit.
Pushing alot of BS to an already ignorant community.
Thats nice. UE4 needs 2 to 3 TFLOPs to run like what was shown at GDC last year.
No one cares. Its going to look like a damn Tonka Toy by the time 720 and PS4 come out.
Mind you, who on earth is going to max it out? Don't know if you realize this or not but, there parties jobs are not to make games on a single system. LMFAO!
It won't get supported. PS3 and 360 Ports will plague it. UNTIL PS4 and 720 come out, thus 3rd parties are working on REAL NEXT GEN GAMES ie PS4, PC and 720 (the whole industry knows when Next Gen starts and there money is clearly going with PS4 and 720, along side PC with is both Current and Next Gen)
Tell me this, what dumbass publisher is going to start developement are a Wii U game that maxes it out, when they can port? What 3rd party publisher will make a Wii U game exclusive and use EVERY piece of power, when PS4 and 720 are releasing?
OH DICE! Go make a Wii U version of BF4, while your making the PS4, 720 and PC version...u...no. BF3 plays rough on 4GIGS of ram.....be we want it on 1gig? OH we want BF4 on it too? LMFAO! PS4 and 720 will take slow, slow dumps on Wii U.
That is a 5x powerleap over PS3/X360. Every gen since PS1 has shifted about 5x the generation before it every 5 years or so.
Bad thing is all rumors point to Power7 being modified and gutted. A typical Nintendo tradition to cut the CPU power down. So that pulls it backwards a little.
@jaosobno - I do. I'm excited because it's based off a fairly modern design (of a 2011 chip rather than the rumoured 2009 chip from last year's leaks), and it supports OpenCL. It's modern tech, and it's power efficient, allowing Wii U to operate at a mere 40 watts and exist within a tiny box.
And the performance of a 4850 is more than what most have been expecting from Nintendo, a bit like how Nintendo have dedicated an entire 1GB to the Wii U's operating system - that's exciting.
In other words - I'm excited because I expected less from Nintendo. I'm pretty sure most of us who follow the company and their Wii U hardware leaks all did. It's all about expectations. We had high expectations for 3DS at E3 2010 due to the lineup shown and we only got a fraction of those games at launch, so it seemed disappointing.
Critics were similarly a bit disappointed with the iPhone 5 because they expected a lot more from Apple, even though in reality it's still a top class smartphone.
If the Wii U has more raw power than PS3/360, and also doesn't have the performance bottlenecks that those consoles have, then Nintendo will achieve great results with it. I think your excitement is justified.
Yeah real exciting. Typical fans wanting more but settling.g for less bcus nintendo has got them accustomed to it then doing damage control. Next gen starts with gearbox and next P's as expected.
Iwata is Aclown for even saying the Wii u will be comparable to nexgen systems from Sony and micro lol THE DIFF will be very noticeable. What he was really thinking was "oh,my the diff. Between Wii u games and ps3 and xbox wont be much.
The problem with the iPhone 5 is that all it did was play catch up to the rest of the smart phones that have been out a year already. Same as it was with the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.
And the new round of Android smart phones will probably have more features and vastly superior hardware specs to the iPhone 5. Then at this rate, the iPhone 6 will do nothing but play catch up AGAIN.
"I hope the next next gen consoles allow some "window" mode or overlay to see that walkthrough while playing the game in real time :)" WiiU does that with the gamepad, so your game stays uninterrupted and uncluttered.(If I understood what I was looking at earlier)
Incoming damage control. Ill let the computer techs here explain it but it is nothing to be excited about. Looks like the Wii u as most believed will follow footsteps of Wii and will be weak compared to what should be todays standard.
No please explain it. So what is more powerful an apu chip from amd or budget video card from amd? Oh amd is making the 720 chips too. Amd chips can run pretty hot lol. I'd also like to know why can't a power7 chip enchance a budget gpu with access to embedded ram?
What is better for gaming an apu or a gpu CPU soc design? Also what is the processing power of a power 7 and what where the short comings of that gpu you mentioned. Why will those shortcomings not be erased by coupling it with a power 7 chip or variant?
Actually AMD's top mobile GPUs run under 75 TDP. Which is a little warm, but not flaming hot.
If WiiU has power of 4850 its GPU is likely the AMD 7870M which runs at 40TDP with maybe 1 Tflop.
Now PS4/XB3 are 100% more likely to aim at 2.5 Tflops of juice. An APU design + a top tier Mobile GPU would work out together to about 2.5 or so Tflops. At least I expect that for PS4's case. XB3 on the other hand I expect to have two GPUs or GPGPUs to hit the same target.
I do not have a clue what having a GPGPU means for a console, but in the future I am sure we will learn how it works as the generation goes on as I expect Sony and Microsoft have already thought of doing this as well. It basically makes a GPU a co-processor. Adding in computing strength from the GPU to the games that are developed on the platform. That is my guess anyway.
Power7 is there for its purpose to be a CPU. As far as its power goes its basically Cell processor upgrade. Cell did 256 Gflops and Power7 does 264 Gflops with roughly the same Ghz range and other details. Power7 does allow for up to 4 threads per CPU core which will come in handy for game development.
A CPU can't erase GPU downfalls. As the GPU is the only thing that puts out the picture. CPU just runs code. Now with GPGPU it likely is running code as well as putting out the picture.
while the wii-u will be slightly stronger than 7 year old consoles, in 2 years when the ps4 and 720 launch it will be the wii vs the ps3 and 360 all over again (capability wise)
meaning as is tradition. nintendo will continue launching a console every 5 years. GC was supported for 5 years, the wii launched last this gen, lasted only 5 years, now wii-u is launching.
well i just hope there will be some good games. i will wait for wii-u to drop to 100-200 bucks before getting it
100, really? Not even the Wii is that cheap. If you wait that long Nintendo will be releasing their next console. And, it's more than slightly stronger. It's a huge performance boost over current gen consoles. Just the GPU alone is at least 5x more powerful. The PS3 is using an old geforce7800 that's about as powerful as the 7600. The xbox 360 is an r500 ati gpu.
its not weak, never said it was. but its not even close to current gen PC games.
i was hoping for atleast 2 gigs of ram. a better set of features and specs. again its great right now. but when MS and Sony's next gen launch its going to be a noticable difference.
i remember when people defended the original wii. Saying the wii was way stronger than the ps2 and xbox yet it never ever showed it even once.
people thought the wii would have games comparable to ps3 and 360, again it never even close to happened.
@ your second comment. You're right, it's not even close to PCs, but consoles will never be close to PCs. Heck when PS3 and 360 released they were already out of date by PC standards too. That said, because consoles run in such and optimised environment, the focus on a particular architecture to get everything you can out of it kind of trumps how weak consoles are. Heck look at how well Xbox 360 and PS3 have held their own? I really don't expect Microsoft's and Sony's next offerings to completely blow us out of the water because I think they've learned that strategy doesn't always work. Anyway, when it comes to the stuff that is really trying to push the limits, I have my PC.
Well if the ps4 doesn't hit until next year they may even be able to get the 660 GTX in it. Its not very expensive now and by that time it could drop in price dramatically.
GPGPU is not a thing it's a technology. It uses the gpu to do cpu like calculations but gpu's can do it faster using openCL or Nvidia Cuda. It's mostly used for video conversion, maybe cell folding & physics simulation..
Also if it really uses a 4850 the damn. That was 2008 + only 1 GB vRam? :(. devs are moving to dx11 nintendo moving to dx10. They are already out of touch with developers. As expected..
Pc gamers have been on 4gb ram for 4 years now.. I really hope sony doesn't follow nintendo. Console are holding back technology.
So explain how developers consistently optimize and use PC specs to their fullest.... While you claim that an r700 gpu or an e6760 is "out of touch" with developers.
consoles really don't need as much RAM as PCs, A PC performs a lot of multi-tasking on a heavy operating system but Consoles generally don't. 2gb RAM is fine, but more is obviously appreciated.
DirectX 11 is microsoft proprietary. Since the 4000 series, AMD(ATI) cards have supported tessellation which is the most important feature of DirectX 11. In other words, it's supported. The features. Not directX 11.
Could Nintendo take over? Bottom line is, we're all Nintendo fans, and if this console caters to the hardcore as well as all of Nintendos great exclusives, why would you own any other console? I'm still iffy about their online, something Microsoft has sewn up
Naughty Dog Geurilla Media Molecule Polyphony Digital SCE Japan Santa Monica San Diego Sucker Punch Lightbox Superbot Bend Minority Plastic Giant Sparrow Ready At Dawn My personal favorite...Quantic Dream
Uhhh...what? I know for sure that I'm getting the PS4. Sony has a lot of amazing in house developers, and I know I'd be missing a huge chunk of the gaming pie if I didn't get their next offering. Xbox on the other hand... While I do own a 360.... I'm thinking that most of the multi plats will probably be better on PC anyway, so, I might skip them next generation. Only time can tell, though.
I don't care how it stacks up to the competition. I'm buying the Wii U to play NINTENDO games in HD. I can't play Zelda or Mario or Metroid on Xbox or PS, nor do I want to.
I've always held the belief that Nintendo is no longer directly competing with Sony or Microsoft. They have their own thing going
Funny how people are assuming that the Wii U GPU is based off the 4850's power, when Nintendo or anyone hasn't even confirmed that. Just because the E6670 had a GPGPU set up doesn't mean that the Wii U will. Nintendo could have had their chip custom made based on another graphics processor, and had AMD make it out to be a GPGPU. People shouldn't really speculate on what they don't know.
Consoles don't need the latest 7970 GPU to match PC's, sure Wii U won't be anywhere as powerful but the games will utilise the hardware very efficiently which cannot be said for PC games.
Nintendo have always been about gameplay anyway, the fact that Wii U has pretty good specs is just a bonus.
Exactly. The truth is it's the PC holding the PC back largely due to PC game developers having to make games with lower specs to accommodate lower-end PC owners who happen to make up the majority of all PC owners/gamers.
Don't you guys see! Nintendo has been known to take a conservative balanced approach. Their console history speaks for it self. Can anyone name one overwhelmingly powerful system that Nintendo has ever made. It seems to me that Nintendo is aiming for a balance of power & flexibility.
Of course it will be a mid range GPU from 4 years ago, the system is $300 to $350 and the controller takes up half the expense, so of course the GPU will be less then what it could have been. I really see nothing special about this new console. Everyone is just excited because its the first new console in 6 years.
Also don't forget Ninty always makes money off their machines starting day one.
Looking great for nintendo this may be the first ninty i get since 64 and a full year to establish , i may not get at launch but will keep a keen eye out.
Its a low end PC which is locked down lol, just like rest of the consoles.

In other words, don't expect any Wii U game to look like a PC game running low settings from 2010 with even the most basic DX11 features turned on.
Last I checked, the E6760(which the Wii u GPU is supposedly based on) does support dx11.
WiiU is really "next gen".
Iwata is Aclown for even saying the Wii u will be comparable to nexgen systems from Sony and micro lol THE DIFF will be very noticeable. What he was really thinking was "oh,my the diff. Between Wii u games and ps3 and xbox wont be much.
And the new round of Android smart phones will probably have more features and vastly superior hardware specs to the iPhone 5. Then at this rate, the iPhone 6 will do nothing but play catch up AGAIN.
I've done this several times on my PC for almost 4 years now.
I hope the next next gen consoles allow some "window" mode or overlay to see that walkthrough while playing the game in real time :)
@thread: 4850? I was expecting at least a 4870.. bah doesn't really matter.
I'd be glad to observe this new console :)
WiiU does that with the gamepad, so your game stays uninterrupted and uncluttered.(If I understood what I was looking at earlier)
GC was supported for 5 years, the wii launched last this gen, lasted only 5 years, now wii-u is launching.
well i just hope there will be some good games. i will wait for wii-u to drop to 100-200 bucks before getting it
i was hoping for atleast 2 gigs of ram. a better set of features and specs. again its great right now. but when MS and Sony's next gen launch its going to be a noticable difference.
i remember when people defended the original wii. Saying the wii was way stronger than the ps2 and xbox yet it never ever showed it even once.
people thought the wii would have games comparable to ps3 and 360, again it never even close to happened.
It has 1gig of ram for games, 1 for other processes.
That's 2, though I'm guessing that's not what you meant.
Slightly over 6 years by the time it actually releases.
The Wii released on 11/19/06.
PS4:
Updated Cell (possibly a 16SPU variant)
GTX 460 1GB
4gb shared memory (DDR4)
Nextbox:
AMD FX-4100
ATI HD4890 1GB
4gb Shared memory (probably DDR3-1600 although not sure)
Obviously they wouldn't be off the shelf, some slight changes/optimizations would be made.
Why doesn't he tout how superior Wii U is over PS2 and Gamecube hardware while he's at it.
Nintendo 1.
2nd round pc
3rd round pc
Also if it really uses a 4850 the damn. That was 2008 + only 1 GB vRam? :(. devs are moving to dx11 nintendo moving to dx10. They are already out of touch with developers. As expected..
Pc gamers have been on 4gb ram for 4 years now.. I really hope sony doesn't follow nintendo. Console are holding back technology.
While you claim that an r700 gpu or an e6760 is "out of touch" with developers.
I'll be here waiting.

Good games. That's why we'd buy another system.
We may not see a PS3 emulator in a long while though (not because it's overwhelmingly powerful but due to the architecture).
I've always held the belief that Nintendo is no longer directly competing with Sony or Microsoft. They have their own thing going
Nintendo have always been about gameplay anyway, the fact that Wii U has pretty good specs is just a bonus.
And have been for the last 31 years and counting.
Also don't forget Ninty always makes money off their machines starting day one.
A CPu with a GPU blended together.
The CPu offloads a lot of "General Processing" work to the Gpu which easily rips through it and sends it back to the cpu for output.
...and since it's a GPU you have 3D graphics rendering as well.
What I want to know is.....The Specs of the CPu and Gpu!
that way I will know EXACTLY how the WiiU will perform and it seems Ninty is keeping that a big secret!
