The Essential 100, No. 40: Angry Birds

Angry Birds draws a lot of hate from hardcore gamers, an unfortunate circumstance when you consider its broad appeal and significance in video game history. That's no hyperbolic statement: In today's cutthroat world of downloadable, mobile games and entertainment, Angry Birds managed to establish itself as a juggernaut -- a record-setting success story that proved the potential of gaming on touch-based devices. Much to the ire of devoted Nintendo fans, Angry Birds is more popular today among kids than Mario, and it boasts the same potential to draw in new gamers that once allowed Nintendo to brag its own mascot was more recognizable than Mickey Mouse. (3DS, Android, Angry Birds, iPad, iPhone, PS3, Xbox 360)

Angry Birds bothers me because it's a ripoff of the Flash game "Crush the Castle". Even some of the level designs are straight rips. All they did was slap different art on it.

Have you ever heard of a game called Castle Clout?

That's like saying Halo was a ripoff of Doom, and that it's popularity and arguable quality was stolen rather than earned just because it falls into the genre that Doom established.

Angry Birds took the core concepts of Crush the Castle (and the many flash games of the same feather), stripped them down to make it more accessible, retooled the mechanics, and created an entirely new theme/premise as well as many original puzzles (something most devs charge extra for anyway). Like it or not, that is called making a new game in an established genre, no matter how recently that genre was established.

This would be true if they didn't literally steal some of the level layouts, and the mechanics for the shots in Crush the Castle.
