Back in July we did an article that began the discussion of which game should be considered the Best Console Game of this generation of consoles. Through comments and emails from readers, there was a clear winner for what game is considered by gamers to be the best this generation.
Although I do agree, Uncharted 2 was brilliant and is up there with the best of the best this generation.
And all Halo games mediocre this gen? Halo 3? A full package with great campaign, long lasting multiplayer with loads of features like Forge, theater mode etc? Or are you going to give credit to Killzone, the prettier but more hollow experience? Myswordisheavebly, you clearly don't understand the meaning of mediocrity.
1. Uncharted 2 - 9.5
2. MGS4 - 9.4
3. Batman Arkham City - 9.3
4. God of War Saga - 9.3 (GOW3 got the same score)
5. Red Dead Redemption - 9.2
6. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - 9.2
7. Killzone 2 - 9.1
8. Little Big Planet - 9.0
9. Bioshock - 9.0
10. Gears of War 3 - 9.0
Honorable Mentions (aka the other 9.0 / 10)
Mass Effect 2, COD MW4, Portal 2, Mario Galaxy, Halo Reach, Forza Motorsport 3,
And before you blab about the campaign mode Lol Halo 3 has a longer campaign than Killzone 2 and 3 put together, and its nowhere near as linear the story is better as well.
And people still play the online ,the community is so much more robust, has anyone swung by KZ2 recently its a ghost town. And note this is just Halo 3 dont get me started on Reach. And if thats not enough for you look at the metacritic/ gameranking scores there higher than Killzone.
You can say you prefer Killzone to Halo thats fine but to say its better please thats just delusional, Thats like someone saying Gears of War 2 is better than Uncharted 2, you would laugh and tell them to shut the fu*k up.
For me, in order for a game to be the best game this gen, it would have to be a game that had a fun single player and multiplayer OR if it didn't have a multiplayer component has to be a single player game that you can player over and over again with multiple endings and decisions.
My choice would be Mass Effect 2 for it's single player campaign OR Halo 3 for it's single player campaign and multiplayer scope.
I personally enjoyed ME2 more than UC2 simply because I could replay it so many times and have so many different outcomes.
As for Halo Reach though? That would certainly be up for debate since like Killzone 2, Halo Reach was also a absolutely fantastic game. When it comes to sheer content, I'd give the advantage to Reach since it has the singleplayer, it has co-op campaign, it has the horde mode, it has forge, it has the great multiplayer etc, whereas KZ2 is strictly solo campaign and standard multiplayer (although it was very innovative). There's definitely something about Killzone 2 that makes it edge ahead in the gameplay department but different strokes for different folks, right?
Both Killzone 2 and Halo Reach are excellent games though. I think I'd rank them as roughly equal, personally.
Though I agree with UC2 and MGS4 being top 2.
Tier 1 ( in no praticular order...)
LBP 1 and 2
Uncharted 2
Gears 3
Red Dead Redemption
Tier 2
MGS4
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
SMG 1 & 2
Tier 3
Demon souls
Uncharted 1 and 3
Assassins creed 2
Witcher 2
Batman Arkham City
Skyrim
Battlefield 3
Dark souls
Call of duty 4
Killzone 2
Ratchet and clank FTOD
Halo Reach
God of war 3
Mass effect 2
I find the Killzone franchise over rated... it has great graphics and has good gunplay, but the rest of the elements are pretty bland
Still though, Demon's Souls beats out all of these in my opinion.
If not Battlefield 3 is on a whole other level.
MGS4, Mario Galaxy, Red dead, Bioshock, Assassins Creed 2, Halo 3, Twilight Princess,Portal there are loads of great games... that its really hard to declare one as the best
I think the best game this generation has yet to be released.
Ground Zeroes, GTA5, Watch Dogs, and The Last Us(which I see having that Uncharted 2 impact) are all candidates for best game this gen.
Other then that, i agree with the post.
I own a PS3 and a PC and can say that KZ2 was one of the best FPS i've played all gen, its pretty much what "NEXT GEN" should mean.
I can tell you, even with KZ2 at 720p, it blows away any FPS i've played in terms of detail ON ANY SYSTEM TO DATE! I think it has to do with them having a format like Bluray.
I've yet to even own a PC FPS that came near KZ2 in terms of quality and the shier amount of detail and take up 50GBs.
Bluray is one of the reasons why KZ2 has so much damn detail.
As a gamer, its one of my favorite games this gen. Its quite a treat for the eyes.
Nothing on PC is really getting me excited (not to say i don't like it) when Sony talks about PS4 and Killzone 4.....i will SHIT!
It just has to do with the publishers that make games on PC, they are not going "BALLS DEEP" in terms of tech, they are going bare minimum, ie what is the max power of the PS4 and 720 and thats just how powerful we will make our game...type motives. LOL! Its why when a game like KZ4 is a announced, it will get a little more excitement just based on that we as gamers know its made to take 100% full capability of the console, vs BS PC port.
No publisher has Sony's number in terms of amazing ips this gen. They truly did a great job.
tailor made
PS3:Motorstorm Pacific Rift
Wii:Metriod Other M
These games I have loved to play, great fun.
Not to everyone's liking I know but I did. Must say the Uncharted games and Halo games are a big favourite of mine aswell.
and what were supposed to take his word and 55 lol comments and have the best game of this generation hahahahaha. please stop.
First off its definately not Killzone by far. They're many titles that have been outplayed outsold and out talked about by far. The entire Halo series. Gears of War, Fallout 3, Uncharted series, MGS you pick, Splinter cell 1.
55 comments from only 9 different users is NOT what anyone would call a fair and just discussion. Hows about letting a discussion go for say a couple monrhs on n4g and then have a basis for a game. Guess what, youd have to base it on sales or played hrs bc fans all have there different favs and you and i wont agree and everybody wil be just giving an IMO answer based on console only or other biased reasons and not a well thought out true answer.
2 games that changed a generation though was GTA and HALO.
Again just like the rediculous
post of trendygames now we have this one as well. hahaha whatever. lol 55 comments:)
lil sony fangirl wannabe I see.
Dont you remember the first Halo on the original Xbox. what did it do for gaming, think about that for a moment or just go play ratchet and clank some more.
I love all games but i dont like fanboys with blinders on or either side. sorry people.
it didnt have much hype.
(obviously it gained some after it was shown, but people were more impressed with how it looked)
the first uncharted was great, I loved it.
but the second just took the series to such a high level. I dont think anyone saw it coming. an amazing experience thats for sure.
Everybody that says it's Killzone 2, has very poor taste in games, or just being a fanboy..
Mass Effect 2, BioShock, Fallout 3 and Call of Duty 4 are great too
If they can fix those things, and make LBP3 where you can literally chose a genre of game and build it with solid gaming mechanics for the PS4, the LBP3 has a chance of being the best game of all time IMO.
Love LBP, just fix the problems.
10/10 when fixed
9 / 10 in current states IMO
Most ground breaking game would be cod4..
It changed a generation.
@Carl_Shocker
Doesn't matter I just stated a fact. Not cods fault it's the console gamers fault. Cod doesn't just create money from thin air.
Minecraft, Skyrim, BF3 and the witcher 2 outsold mw3 on pc though. nice!
...for the worst
Uncharted 2 was probably the most iconic generational-leap game, encapsulating that "playing a blockbuster movie" feel that was only a distant dream last gen.
My personaly favorite would be something less linear than either of the above, but there's no denying that those games shaped what we've come to expect from AAA titles.
Ok lol
Double that will comment on this article.
Rated E For Everyone
Therefore, it's better.
Also, it's better because it's more fun. ;)
These type of articles are always fun though. Most of the comments are pretty entertaining.
Galaxy 2 is a step above Tools of Destruction (which I loved). the creativity is unmatched in the platform genre
not a nintendo fanboy, and i played all those game (MGS4 IS FAVE GAME THIS GEN)
55 comments, out of the 30 million hardcore gamers in the world (Extremely light estimate) and so the GAMERS have spoken?
Ok chief. I'll take your word on it.
Suddenly all other games afterward that keep cropping up do reference Uncharted 2 in particular.
It gave me the outlet to do what I've wanted to do for 30 years. Create stuff myself.
I only hope the next one goes full 3D in its gameplay.
Mario Galaxy 2
Metal Gear Solid 4
Read Dead Redemption
Gears of War
Bioshock
Little big planet 2
God of War 3
Mass effect 2
Killzone 2 (from a tech pov)
Zelda skyward sword
Call of duty 4
While there were plenty of other great games I feel like these stick out the most.
Not to mention we are still getting:
Halo 4
Metal Gear Solid ground zeroes
Beyond
Last of Us
Assassins creed 3
Bioshock infinite
This is more like it. But don't forget Batman: AA, Deus Ex: HR, Portal 2, Heavy Rain, Metroid, Dead Space and Ratchet & Clank: ACiT.
And the upcoming GTA V!!!
I love every game you mentioned especially r&c acit and batman but I feel like they are slightly below the ones I mentioned when it comes to defining this gen. Personally I prefer ratchet and clank over Mario but Mario was more memorable and a bigger hit.
but it really doesnt matter as long there´s great games coming out every year like these.
Maybe even Watch Dogs, if that is released this gen.
O_o
UC2 nuff said
skyrim
oblivion
demons souls
dark souls
the witcher 2
diablo 3
bioshock 1
halo reach
uncharted 2
lbp
smg2
RDR is a great game
Crap list.
I myself can't pick one game. I enjoyed Uncharted, Mass Effect, Dead Space, Red Dead Redemption, Forza, Mario Galaxy, there are a ton of games.
I'm gonna go with "no".
Story: Halo's story spans millions of years dealing intergalactic genocide, forerunners and prometheans in the mix, with a deep storyline that I can't even begin to explain to you here
Gameplay: People are quick to forget how Halo showed the world that consoles can do online fps'. Proper vehicular combat excellent combat enhanced by original designs in weaponry and excellent maps plus forge which gives you the tools to make your own and share them online.
Soundtrack: Do I need to go into this?
Halo outclasses Killzone in almost every area except maybe raw visual prowess. Even then, Halos art style is extremely unique, making Killzone look more generic albeit impressive.
Killzone hasn't even come close to managing to dethrone Halo. In fact, Halo 2 is still arguably a superior title in its multiplayer. Maybe in the future Killzone might finally manage to pull of the feat but for now, anyone with any objective and logical insight will know that Halo has yet to be surpassed by any FPS exclusive on the PS3
Now lets look at things from a balanced perspective. The reality is YOU ARE RIGHT!:D Halo is superior to Killzone, but not by the amount you and many fanboys make it out to be.
Story: Yes Halo does have a truly outstanding experience when it comes to story, It spans 7 games 1,2,3, odst, wars, reach, and now 4, along with numerous books on the topic. But that is exactly the problem Killzone only has 3 games so far halo is much older, and therefore has had more time to develop its story into the titan that it is;. On top of the fact that Killzone's overall story has some great depth to it as well, (the only reason anyone would disagree with that statement is if they havent played killzone 1, because the events of killzone 1 will enchance every moment of 2+3's stories. Plus killzone 2+ 3 had a GREAT cinematic experience. Killzone talkes about genocide as well(just like halo) forcing the helghan off of helghan in an extrasolar war. Who knows mube in the future killzone will do what halo did and do backstory games to add depth. Halo 1+2 had very shallow stories when compared to reach and now 4. The creators have allowed the franchise to mature, and then they added onto it. Killzone from the get go was always dark and gritty. Som what I'm saying is purely this. Dont compare the story of a 7 games, book selling game thats had a longer running time than a 3 game series.
Gameplay: This part is purely subjective, Halo is much more hair trigger fast skill, and killzone is more slow paced skil (especially on higher difficulties). But I would argue that killzone is MUCH harder.
Soundtrack: This part in your argument made me laugh. Halo's composers are Very respected ( Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori), but do you know who the composer of killzone is? HANNS ZIMMER one of the greatest composers of the modern time, he worked on The dark knight and MANY blockbuster films. The halo composers have only worked on halo and minor TV shows.
Graphics: Its killzone because simply it wins awards every year for graphics, halo doesnt.and the art styles are opinionated, killzone is realistic/gritty. Halo is cartoony.
Let me go through your points and offer my rebuttal
Story- From the outset, Halos story is one of intrigue. It came down to affect the actual gameplay- the enemies (flood, sentinels, covenant, heretics) and the amazing maps (the iconic silent cartographer, the ark, covenant ships etc). Halos story, especially Greg Bear's new novels adding more depth art extremely deep. Humans being advanced millennia ago, then devolved by forerunners, the flood bring the final test of the Prometheans, the 50 year conversation between Mendicant Bias and the Gravemind etc. It's far more unique than Killzone's. And now the shield planets protecting life from the Halo arrays....its crazy and all ties up so well. My mate, who has even played the Halo games apart from anniversary just recently absolutely loved Cryptum.
Halo led the way and popularised many features that are now the staple of fps'; two weapon restrictions, no health bar etc. The unique way you control vehicles with the camera view. Halo was and is far more innovative.
Soundtrack: I am aware of Hans Zimmer's work and have most of his albums. Whilst Killzone's soundtrack is suitably epic, it doesn't tie in to the core of the experience as much as Halo. Halo has that iconic choir sound that marries so well with the game world. But yes, I concede that it isn't necessarily objectively superior.
Thinking that Halo's graphics are cartoony is completely missing the point and just plain wrong. Halos style is amazingly unique and vibrant. It's use of colours in a generation where browns and greys have dominated is refreshing. Killzone merely relies on raw visual prowess. Killzone's visuals are great but you cannot deny that Halos are original. Look at Halo 4 for proof. But yes, Killzone is spectacular to behold from a visual standpoint.
Halo is the definition of a killer app. Without it, we most likely wouldn't even have the Xbox 360. Very few games can lay claim to managing a similar feat. In comparison to Halo, Killzone is a good looking but generic shooter. Halo popularised online fps gaming on consoles and proved the pc crowd wrong when it said that it consoles couldn't do it. Halo's legacy isn't a fluke. It is a result of its merits. Killzone 1 was actually a very mediocre game as will be agreed by fans and reviewers. The series from the start was hailed as a 'Halo Killer' but we all know how that turned out. Halo continues to eclipse Killzone, and rightly so. Sony have yet to find their 'Halo Killer' because when it comes down to it, they haven't had their true fps exclusive 'killer app'.
Halo is the better game without a doubt.
Both Halo and Killzone have their major fine points and in my finite opinion and as Angels3785 stated, the Halo franchise is a more established series due to its broadly established brand across multiple games titles and novels. After playing all the games in the series and reading the novels filled with great story and character dynamics which are full of intrigue, walking away from such an encompassing experience and overall the Halo universe is a magical experience. However, all that aside, when comparing Halo to Killzone from a sheer interactive experience, it is all subjective. While Halo's soundtrack is great tying well into it's experience, the Killzone soundtrack is just as amazing driving home the tension of the intensity of the gunplay. (My opinion: They cancel each other out)
Visually Halo has offered a list of great looking titles except for Halo 3:ODST and Halo Wars. Yet, the best looking games of the Halo series have not been as memorable as its counterpart. No one today heralds any Halo game in graphical debate to today's best looking titles, yet Killzone 2 was released in 2009 and still is considered for many visuals debates as well as KZ3. Technically with what both franchises have offered so far excluding the potential of Halo 4, Killzone 2&3 are more technically sound having made this position an objective point. (My opinion: Killzone)
When it comes to features Halo I believe gets the edge as it simply offers more features. Online and offline co-op, forge mode, gameplay record sharing, etc. Killzone on the other hand offers a more traditional approach with a standard campaign and online multiplayer with only offline co-op play. (My opinion Halo)
Again when it comes to gameplay it comes down preference while both games offer a high level of AI enabled enemies. I personally find the gunplay affair in Killzone to be more according to my tastes. Upclose, personal and very brutal.
Also, the weapons create an immersive sense of reality while muzzle flashes realistically light up the environment. While both shooters now offer an upgraded melee maneuver, the Killzone melee attack holds much more shock value and awe. Hit detection is also very important in a shooter. Halo has solid hit detection while Killzone goes the extra mile revealing how the body reactions to being riddles with bullets making for a bloody mess. During most of the Halo affair you are alone fighting the enemy (except for REACH) going from objective to objective killing the enemy along the way. In Killzone the same can be said about going from objective to objective killing the enemy, yet you are oftentimes accompanied by an ally which assists with driving the story forward but this doesn't necessarily make the gameplay better. Again, gameplay is subjective (My opinion Killzone)
In the end it's up to you to decide which you prefer. Both franchises are great shooter entirely, however I prefer a more gritty and intense feel to my shooters and Killzone take the cake.
i don't know if you could call them the best, but they were two of my favourites.
Nice fail
But obviously UC2 is an epic Game and definetly in the Top 10, How can anyone say a definitive Number 1 this Gen, you have to remember there are Games like MGS4, Halo Reach, Zelda, Mass Effect and so many others that i couldnt pick one over the other. Especially when you like me have more then 1 Console.
