Telltale's The Walking Dead Deserves GOTY Considerations

Jeff from Holygrenade writes: "Telltale’s The Walking Dead, through a measly three episodes (about six hours of content), has accomplished what most games simply cannot. Presenting the mental, emotional, and moral chaos of human interaction in a worldwide epidemic, without emphasizing violence, believably. A game built for provoking survivalist tendencies, not bloodshed." (Industry, PC, PS3, Telltale Games, The Walking Dead - A Telltale Games Series, The Walking Dead Episode 2 -- Starved for Help, The Walking Dead Episode 3: Long Road Ahead, Xbox 360)

I wholeheartedly agree. Arcade GOTY? yes.

As a huge fan of both the comic and TV show I'd say the story in the Walking dead game is better than that of the TV show and absolutely on par with that of the comics, and I do not say that lightly. I've never been quite as connected to a character and concerned about their safety as I am with Clementine. I find myself spending about five minutes before leaving each screen making absolutely sure nothing is going to put her in danger.

Having said that I would probably hold off on a GOTY nomination due to the appalling way Telltale have handled the release of the game and their interaction with their customers. That may not technically be part of the game but it's soured my experience somewhat.

The developer's antics have nothing to do with the actual product itself, and to think that Telltale's behaviour is any reflection of just how fantastic the episodes are is ludicrous. I agree that their conduct has been atrocious, but the episodes are fantastic nonetheless.

You know I'd have to agree. This is coming from someone who HATES point and click games. This was the only one to ever receive any enjoyment out of me.
GrahamGolden  +   253d ago
i thought i would never touch another point and click game since broken sword (the 2d's) wich for me is the top point and click adventure, but then came the walking dead and loved it again

and the new broken sword looks to be the best ever and returns back in its original roots

Hmm, never played any of them. Is it like Walking Dead, as in you have choices that affect and change the story? Because that was the main thing that drew me into Walking Dead.

no its adventure, and puzzles, franchise was too old to have that back then.

the first one came in 1996

I've been saying this forever and my people look at me as though I have two heads lol. Easily my favorite downloadable game of the year and we still have two episodes to go.

absolutely not imo. is it a great game? well sort of. the story is absolutely phenomenal and imo much better than the show even. however as a game it falls very flat. the game could work just as well flowing from one cut scene to another with you able to simply make choices, in fact it would be arguably more enjoyable that way. it has virtually no game play, walking from point a to point b, clicking an item and walking back is hardly gameplay imo oh and the occasional shoot out.

that said, they are fantastic and deserve much praise but not for being a game, simply for its story telling.

I do hop they win some awards this year they do deserve it.

I agree that its a great set of games this far and I cannot wait to complete the last two parts in the series. That being said, they usually give out GOTY awards to AAA titles. You can bet Assassins Creed 3, Borderlands 2, Halo 4 and Mass Effect 3 will be up for plenty of those awards. Its just how the industry works, they reward hype a lot more then anything else.

I mention this at the end of the post.
