NPD August: Darksiders 2, Xbox 360 dominate

VG247 writes: Xbox 360 once again dominated US retail during August, according to data released by Microsoft in a separate press briefing. The platform holder claims to have sold 193,000 Xbox 360 consoles during August, taking it to its 20th consecutive month as the US’s best-selling console.

The Xbox 360 held 48% of console sales; again, this gives Microsoft a new record to boast of, with 18 months in a row with over 40% of US market share. Total retail spend on Xbox 360 hardware, software and accessories reached $196 million, which Microsoft says is more than consumers shelled out on PlayStation 3 and Wii products combined. (3DS, PC, PS Vita, PS3, Tag Invalid, Wii, Xbox 360)

here comes the " oh i guess the US equals the world" spin
calis  +   671d ago
How is it spin? It certainly isn't fact, unless I've been taught wrong and I do live in America.
Mustang300C2012  +   671d ago
Because it is irrelevant to say it. It clearly states NPD. The only reason it gets said because of the sensitivity issues of Sony fanboys and it has been said every since things didn't pan out with domination.

Thats just how some fanboys justify things... sales in one market equal the best sales,
Take one thing that proves you right and run with it, and take no other information that proves you wrong... I also live in america
dc7070  +   671d ago
Because it sort of is spin don't you think. Obviously everyone should know that NPD equals only US so why do people get mad when headlines like NPD: Xbox 360 dominates in sales are posted.

I would understand if they said Xbox 360 dominates worldwide in the NPD report something like that is understandable but those people who makes those comments obviously know that NPD=US only they are just sensitive and try to spin it instead of giving credit where it's due.
Dante112  +   671d ago
@ MadMen, Videoxgamexfanboy, Mustang, midnight.

Wow, alot of spinning here today.

USA actually doesn't equal the world. The 360 only held down 48% of the sales in the US this month and Xbox360 hardware sales were down by 37.3% (According to Neogaf that puts the PS3 at 140k-150k units sold for the month. Only a 40k difference between the Ps3 and 360. Source: http://www.neogaf.com/forum... ). Not exactly great as you all make out lol. Currently the PS3 leads in overall WW sales by 1.9 million "this year" as well (Source: http://www.vgchartz.com/cha... ).

No, you're just trying to start a war
miDnIghtEr20C_SfF  +   671d ago
Exactly. People forget NPD is about the best area and most important for sales of all the people that live here in the USA.

NPD, USA, Month after Month, 360 is the King.
azazel665  +   671d ago
It is by far the largest market in the world. Posting the highest sales in the US is nearly equivalent to posting the highest sales in every other country of the world combined. That's why it's so important.
GribbleGrunger  +   671d ago
Yes, but you have to understand that lots of 360 owners just think that these numbers DO mean it sold better than the PS3 'worldwide'. If it did it wouldn't bother me in the least. It's just that misinterpretation that most Sony fans can't bring themselves to ignore, especially when you see posts like 'Owned'.

Do you seriously think that a PS3 owner is going to ignore that? There's nothing wrong with stating that America has sold more 360s than PS3s, but how would anyone interpret that word other than gloating at sales figures? You shouldn't gloat just because your console sold well in one region. It's as bad as when Sony fans gloat about selling better in Europe or Japan. Oddly enough though, there's less of that

'It is by far the largest market in the world. Posting the highest sales in the US is nearly equivalent to posting the highest sales in every other country of the world combined. That's why it's so important.'

Do you need any clearer proof than this? Which then automatically calls for the obvious response: Sorry but the PS3 outsold the 360 worldwide for the last six months... See, it's unavoidable. which then leads to someone mentioning that the 360 won last year and then someone has to balance the argument by explaining that the gap was 8 million and is now 1.9 million.

This then leads to the validity of VGChartz and automatically puts the emphasis on NPD which luckily favours the Americans and the 360 owners. And on we go...

If it did, you WOULD be bothered! There is definitely no doubt about that. XD
GribbleGrunger  +   671d ago
Why? Why would I be bothered? I spend the greater part of my time on this site explaining why I'm not bothered about Vita not selling as well as the 3DS. It doesn't bother me at all. It's about getting a big enough install base to get 3rd party support, not beating someone else. Why can't you people understand? What bothers me and other Sony fans (not Sony fanboys) is the constant 'gloating' when it's not even warranted. And then when the worldwide figures are discussed, dozens and dozens of 360 fanboys just can't accept that the PS3 outsold the 360 and either quote DPD numbers or dismiss VGchartz. Can you not see how that would warrant a response?

***"If it did, you WOULD be bothered! There is definitely no doubt about that."***

Just as you WOULD be bothered if the PS3 were to all of a sudden dominate U.S. sales charts? Seeing as you like to play finances a lot. XD

@Outside_ofthe_Box:

"Just as you WOULD be bothered if the PS3 were to all of a sudden dominate U.S. sales charts? Seeing as you like to play finances a lot. XD"

Does it bother me? Nope!

I owned all three platforms and could care less. I have been playing on PC, Nintendo and Playstation for ages, then I swapped to Xbox 360/Wii and is now sort of back on PC.

The only time it would really bother me is when it goes so bad, one of the competitors bows out. I would never want that, so when Sega bowed out it was a sad day. Less competition are less choices, and never good for consumers or even the companies involved.

Finance doesn't interrest me as much as business strategy, but yes, I do like to discuss that within an industry I have personal attachment to and hence, better understanding of.

Anything wrong with that?
Dante112  +   671d ago
@ iamgoat

Actually the PS3 kinda does. The PS3 leads the 360 by as much as 4.3 million in Europe. Guess the UK's 11k sales for the 360 each month didn't make the difference this year.

Meanwhile in europe/japan.. the 360 gets raped there
iamgoatman  +   671d ago
It hardly gets "raped" in Europe, it sells better than the PS3 in the UK which is the largest market there. Japan on the other hand, well you can't argue with that.
jjdoyle  +   671d ago
it doesnts?
Redgehammer  +   671d ago
The U.S. may not equal the world in total population, but it is impossible to deny we are, by far, the largest market.
AngelicIceDiamond  +   671d ago
It was an easy win for it considering Darksiders had an easy launch window.

Grats on Xbox being the number 1 selling console in the U.S.
oONinjavitiSOo  +   671d ago
First off I don't play xbox. But I'm happy to see excitement for any game or console. Great job!
JellyJelly  +   671d ago
Nice to see Darksiders 2 selling well, but if I had to pick I'd rather see Sleeping Dogs at the top. New IP and amazing game.

"The Xbox 360 held 48% of console sales; again, this gives Microsoft a new record to boast of, with 18 months in a row with over 40% of US market share. Pretty impressive numbers.

id rather pick darksiders, relatively new ip and amazing game. deserves every bit of its sales. that said, judging from the demo alone, sleeping dos prob did too. also transformers was an amzing game as well.

i would have liked to see it read....

1. darksiders 2 - 2+ million
2. transformers - 1.8+ million
3. sleeping dogs - 1.6+ million

of course thats just wishful thinking but id like to see the new and relatively new ips start putting up big numbers like all the usual suspects

If the Vita is any indication, Sony has a hard time in the USA.

Vita below 40k for the past 5 weeks. Probably around 6000 - 7500 in a week in the biggest market is terrible and nothing less.
StreetsofRage  +   671d ago
And people still think the ps3 is going to catch up? The Number 1 gaming market in the world goes to the Xbox 360. Europe is pretty much even. And one of the smallest markets in the world in Japan goes to the ps3. How is Sony going to catch up??? It was revealed not to long ago at E3 that the Xbox 360 is the top selling console worldwide.

It's a done deal. The Xbox 360 beat the PS3. No excuses, no whining, no this or that, I don't want to hear "if" "but" "if"...the 360 beat the PS3. Take your medicine like a man Sony boys and let's stop your silly ways. This site is riddled with sony fanboys that constantly spew lies and excuses and it's sicking. Throw the white flag and let's just play some games!!!

...End Rant. :)

So I'm then inclined to want to respond to this nonsense. In this case my response will be simple: 'In America'

See, inevitable.

He did make it pretty clear that he was talking about America as being the largest gaming market in the world:

"The Number 1 gaming market in the world goes to the Xbox 360."

He also stated that currently the xbox 360 is leading world wide:

"It was revealed not to long ago at E3 that the Xbox 360 is the top selling console worldwide. "

Your "In America" comment was pretty redundant and useless adding nothing to his comment nor discrediting it either. You pretty much just wasted your time feeling the need to reply to him. Almost like his comment made you feel bad enough that you had to say something....did his comment hurt your feelings?

Wow the disagrees for my comment. All I said was grats on Xbox being the number 1 selling console in the U.S?

And fanboys are hurt, why?
