Pressure's off: What Square can accomplish with Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

It's been a long, strange ride for Final Fantasy XIII. From long delays and substantial disappointment, it has lately seen its stock fluctuate wildly between the improved reception afforded Final Fantasy XIII-2 and the rumors of Final Fantasy Versus XIII's demise. Now Square Enix has a chance to make its definitive statement on the series with Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII – an ambitious sequel that defies the accusations that Square is only out to squeeze a few more dollars out of its expensive engine. (Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, PS3, Xbox 360)

I think your article is amazing! FF rules.

The same thing they accomplished with the first sequel to FF13...hardly nothing.

They'll hype the game up, big up minor features to make them look like huge, game changing features for the game when they arn't, they'll keep saying they listened to fans when they havent and they will try to trick as many people as they can to buy the game one last time for more money.

Come on guys learn from your mistakes

Fool me once...remember.

I can't agree with this more. Why keep throwing FFXIII at us? It's like they are trying to make something good out of FFXIII. Just forget about it and give me an amazing FFXV

hardly nothing? 13-2 was a good game. It had a better combat system, was not linear, more exploring, and story was still pretty good.

Yeah, but Carl Shocker didn't like FF13 and probably didn't give it much of a chance. So he's tricked himself into thinking they didn't make any improvements over FF13 which they did. For the most part they made the changes fans wanted, but some people will never be happy with anything FF13 does. People complained about linearity so they made it more open. People complained about the characters so they tried to make Noel and Serah likable. Noel and Serah weren't the best characters imo but they werent bad either.

@Capt-FuzzyPants

I've played it and I still found it was crap, the improvments were just minor improvments that didn't really add anything to the game

FF13 was so bad though that anything is going to seem like an improvment.

Fact is the so called improvments didn't make it any more like a FF game. It was a cheap cash in made of cut DLC with a forced time travel story full of paradoxes and plot holes.

XIII-2 was great imo, i didn't felt "fooled" by it.

SE accomplished some money off of FFXIII-2.

Because developing XIII-2 was cheaper and faster than making an entirely new game from the ground up.

A lot of the assets are already done like character/monster/field/prop models, character/npc animations and various other things. Even the game engine/coding and what not. Sure they tweaked most, if not all of it and there are even a lot of new additions. But it sure must have cost cheaper than remaking everything from scratch.

I imagine it will be the same for Lightning Returns.

What can they accomplish?

The end of this crappy saga and the start of finishing Versus.
stuntman_mike  +   693d ago
what improvements can they make...tell everyone to buy Ninokuni when it comes out as thats more final fantasy than anything square has put out lately and also looking like the best JRPG in ages.
Kurisu  +   693d ago
A game can't be more Final Fantasy than Final Fantasy because the game/s are their own entity. A Final Fantasy title will always be a Final Fantasy game, but they will be evolved versions. We have to face the fact that Square Enix are breaking the mold and experimenting with their franchise in order to keep it fresh.

Fresh? How is a sequel of a sequel Fresh ?

Making FF XV will be fresh.
stuntman_mike  +   693d ago
i just think they need to move on from this story arc, i'm playing 13 at the moment and plan on playing 2 and i will probably play 3 as well but the story hasn't been great and the game hasn't gripped me like the others, just feels like there's something missing.

not that i'm saying their bad games but they aren't that great either.

A spin-off that isn't even part of the same genre that FF is known to be.

The treatment that the XIII series deserves.
