Watch The Last of Us PAX Theater Gameplay Demo in HD
Posted by Eric Monacelli // Community Strategist, Naughty Dog -
Pax Prime was a blast! We were amped to publicly show off our behind-closed-doors gameplay demo of The Last of Us that only a very select few media members saw at E3.
(PAX, PS3, The Last Of Us)
Yea that got me too! I just knew that guy was gonna come out the blue and punch him.......Im loving the A.I. You never know what they'll do. And towards the end when Joel falls .......It all just looks so freaking amazing! Naughty Gods just keep outdoing themselves!
Sorry to be repetitive, but this game looks better and better each time I see it. Then they announced a possible multiplayer. ND is so talented and Ill likely vote this game of the year, unless MGS comes out next year as well. Then its gonna be a tough decision.
Wow. This is going to be a freaking amazing game. I think that Naughty Dog with a great a deal of help and millions in funding from Sony (good investment btw) are showing what the ps3 is capable of. Not doing the same for the Xbox was a massive mistake for Microsoft IMO. Granted the Xbox has had a great deal of success on the market, it still would have been nice to see Microsoft push for an advanced Xbox only engine, fully funding that engine's development, and then pooring money into a new IP the way Sony did. But then it is all about making the most profit possible from your product in the end.
When your idol praises this game constantly, and you keep trashing it... you are in serious denial
Oh and I played resident evi 6's demo... chris feels like a gears clone
They try to make leon scary by making him walk long distances, and slowly creaking doors.. which is boring, and they do nothing to make it interesting.. you just walk slowly and wait for something to happen
And Jake... egh, Jakes is the worst I played
Im just watching a walthrough and skipping RE6... its not the re games I loved just another action game that no one would care for if it wasn't called RESIDENT EVIL 6
Don't understand your hate for TLOU or ND... but man you really are in denial after all the praise Kojima gave ND and TLOU
Your hate agenda against Naughty Dog is pathetic, because you were going to hate on their next game before it was even announced.
Capcom have lost touch, and if you weren't such a troll you'd realise that Naughty Dog has beaten them at their own game. I'll say it now and I'll expect to get agrees from fanboys and level headed gamers alike... There's more suspense in this demo than any (entire) Resident Evil game in the last decade. How you can find those levels of tension "boring" is beyond me. This is real survival horror, and the horror comes from suspense and tension that the characters you grow to care about are in truly realistic peril - something that The Last of Us will deliver in metric shit-tons. With Resident Evil 6, that's what we expected, but it's not what we're getting.
Surely Resident Evil will be your prize game of this year, but it's doing barely anything to truly satisfy long-time series fans, or fans of survival horror games. Meanwhile, The Last of Us is quietly winning that battle in the hearts and minds of real gamers. Gamers who don't restrict their tastes to Japan. Kojima is a real gamer, for example: http://andriasang.com/con1b...
"slow and boring to play"
Hahahahahah. I'm sorry but that actually made me laugh out loud, but then I was sad that you're probably serious. You didn't watch the whole video did you? You don't have anything else valid to say do you?
Your "scripted" argument has been proven wrong beyond what I'm sure you ever imagined, your "linear" argument will be somewhat true, but then again, so is Resident Evil 6. Nothing else you say is true, because this game is far from boring, even if you think it's 'just your opinion'. This is one of the most exciting games to come along in a long time. The enemies actually feel real, the environments looks real in a convincing post-apocalyptic way. It's all so convincing, that it's hard to believe something like this could be real and run so flawlessly, especially on ageing PS3 hardware.
When this game wins a load of Game of the Year awards (because it will), expect us to be replying in the same manner, because the game will be out then, will be much loved, much purchased, and you won't be able to make premature excuses any longer.
I know alot of ND god fan gonna hate me for this but the AI's respond need a little work.
1. The guy ran out, saw Joe just kill his friend with a brick, he started shooting but ran away as soon as Joe reaching for the gun. Why didn't he keep shooting, he has the advantage right cause Joe was unarmed. So he ran hide and stick his head out to get shot later.
2. The guy behind the window duck when joe take a shot. But afterward, he just kept his head out looking around for what purpose? To lure Joe forward for the ambush or because joe wasn't aiming at him at the time?
3. The guy ambush Joe and take a hold of him so that his friend can shoot. Why then the guy (#2 above) didn't shoot then but he didn't hesitate to shoot later when joe used his friend as a shield and kill his team member?
There some minor nitpicking but like the blood spatter part when joe shoot that first guy hiding behind the bed. The blood disappear when joe ran back to that room later and appear on the other side of the window instead when joe move outside.
Now don't get me wrong, i would prefer this over the recent resident evil direction, but ND still have some work ahead to iron out the AI respond specially, some minor glitches, and maybe add a little atmospheric touches to the overall environment.
Based on the disagreement, I guess I did more for ND, and they would agree with my assessment, than the blind fan ever could. You guys never looks at game objectively don't you?
Lets see, would ND hire game tester (who look at their game objectively and find flaw) to test out their game or would they hire the fans on here who only see perfection in everything ND does?
And if anyone care to counter my assessment since you guys disagree? or perhaps you guys can't find anything to dispute my assessments about TLOU AI are actually legit, true, and helpful to ND development process?
@boedeus 1) He took one shot, but if you look carefully the animation is not someone taking a stand to shoot, but rather panic fire... the guy is literally stumbling to get away... which makes sense. If I have friends, I want to alert them that a guy with a gun is here, and group up with them to have strength in numbers. He ran to warn his friends... which is why you here him yell OH SHIT! HES GOT A GUN! HES GOT A GUN! As soon as he gets killed his friend runs over to some one else to say he only sees one person... which also explains why the first one ran, as he doesn't know how many people are with Joel
2) This one is pretty obvious... when you are behind cover the only way to look is too peek your head out. This has been done many times in games, movies etc.. where the person looks over cover to check if the person is still there.. if you look closely he hasn't even begun to aim his gun, because he ran and did not know if Joel followed him
3) Look at Joels movements.. he is moving to much and the guy holding him is not safe, thats why you here SHOOT HIM, but the guy with the gun yells HOLD HIM STILL... so when Joel breaks free.. he panic fires 3 shots, but Joel grabs the other guy in time to shield himself. This can also be looked at as a means for the player to have a larger margin of error.. the moment when Joel was taken down was punishing as it took half of his health... that can also be a factor as ND wants the player to not die due to one mistake
Also the stuff about tweeks can be fixed.. this is not the final build and you can see improvements over the e3 demo in terms of textures... the game won't be out till next year... so they have time to iron out the kinks
You can look at ANY game on ANY platform and you will find flaws like the ones you mentioned. Better yet you will find 10 times the amount of flaws on many games.
It would be fun to have everything perfectly realistic but there is not a game in existence now or in the near future (say 236 years) that is perfectly realistic in every way. It just won't happen so concentrating on such things is futile. You will never enjoy a game in your life if you are that critical/cynical.
J-blaze gonna hate on naughty dog cause they are surpassing crapcom. How can you not think this looks better then resident evil 5,6 which are shell's of their former self. This game has more suspense in a demo then resident evil 5 had in the entire game. So stop hating you jelly naab.
Coincidentally I just played the RE6 demo on PS3. I started as Leon my favorite RE character obvious choice then I play for about 6 minutes of just walking then finally I quit because it was so damn boring and the camera angle was horrible. I might give it another try when I'm not so impatient.
I am not too certain about GOTY as of now because we still need to see whats up with the last guardian and if/when the next gen systems do hit at the end of 2013 they will have something or two in the running too for GOTY... But it will be a candidate that is pretty much certain...
The game is definitely not as linear as Uncharted. And the game definitely isn't as scripted as Uncharted. If you STILL think otherwise after watching both demos then something is wrong with you to be honest.
The game is definitely open and so far the only scripted set piece shown was the elevator cord snapping at the end. Sorry to disappoint all those that were hoping for The Last of Us to be some sort of Survival Horror Uncharted game.
The more I see of The Last of Us the more my anticipation for the game grows.
This game officially tops my list for most anticipated games. I can't believe how great this game seems to be. I haven't bought a game on day one for years but this will be day one it seems. Can't resists.
I'm honestly surprised at how amazing this is, and the encounters with infected haven't even been shown yet. These are just the regular day to day events happening in the game, with the big threats not even shown yet. Masterpiece for sure.
the people I know would never play the game like this, pausing to see everything. they would constantly make the character run around exposing the bad animations and spoiling the cinematics
just saying the people i know would never play the game walking around exploring the environment. They would just rush through and not care about the story or back stories. And when you rush through it ruins pacing and almost everything that the artists have put into the game. I wasn't saying the game is rubbish, I was saying the general public would never play the game the way the person in this demo is playing it. Which is a shame because they won't get the true cinematic experience. Hope that clears everything up.
that demo was played exactly the way it should have been.
what clues me to that is the part with the last enemy.
when he throws the molotov and gets shot into the fire, and his feet catch on fire.
Id bet my bottom dollar that there is no other way to beat that section of the game.
nevertheless, i dont mind playing the way they want me to play because when you do you get a great world that is one of the most believable ive seen in a long time perhaps the most believable
DID THIS REMIND ANYONE OF HALF-LIFE? just the feel of the world?
Are you serious Autodidactdystopia? That play though was entirely different to the play through we saw before. I could see lots of different ways to go, including getting through it without being seen. I can't believe that even after seeing that you think that scene is scripted. Naughty Dog has already said that you can get through this section without being seen at all... Just how many times does that scene have to be played for people to understand the genius of ND?
@Autodidactdystopia, I doubt it's quite as scripted as you're thinking. Scripting to the degree of getting that enemy's foot to catch on fire would mean you'd be unable to shoot him until he was standing right next to the fire, and that you'd have to automatically have the ammo to shoot him.
My guess (as someone who knows nothing about game design) is that the enemies have preset patrols and a number of scripted reactions to being attacked at different points on that patrol by enemies with different weapons. Meaning if you always attack that guy in the room at around that time, the guy in the hall will be there to see you, he'll always run, you'll probably always just about see him climbing through that window and he'll always be hiding in that hallway with a Molotov if you chase him. But of course if you attack the guy outside of the room first or shoot the guy in the room from the other room you'll set off a completely different chain of events. Anyway that's my uneducated guess.
Oh, I simply couldn't make sense of your comment. Regardless, in the previous demo, we saw the ladder already set up, here we now see Joel needs assistance to find it, which means it does require exploring at times. Not to mention ND states that the supplies would be very limited, so exploration is definitely promoted if they want to keep their advantage.
It's just awesome that they ran a different path to the original footage and took out one guy, cannot wait to see more of this game, cannot wait to own it
we don't need next gen yet, this video proves that. Ea and the rest of you guys who are whining about next gen needs to keep their mouth shut or i personally tell you off lol
No offense to the game, but what we've seen so far doesn't even look as good (graphically) as Uncharted 2 or 3.
As for the game itself, I really hope Naughty Dog force the whole "having to use everything at your disposal, including your environment" and not give you the option to just treat it like an average third person shooter like Uncharted where you just kill everyone with bullets. Ammo should be scarce and you should NEED to use melee, stealth, distractions, and strategy. If the game simply lets you kill everything with a gun with a plentiful supply of ammunition, then it wont be much different from Uncharted, or any other third person shooter for that matter. Hopefully the playstyle that has been shown in the videos so far is mandatory, and not optional.
How old are you, 13? If you disagree with me, then state why, don't be an immature little brat and just call everyone who disagrees with you an idiot, that's what real idiots do.
I really don't see how people think TLoU looks graphically better than Uncharted. TLoU looks good and has better animations than Uncharted, but it doesn't look better, based on what has been shown SO FAR. The Last of Us even looks way more fun than Uncharted to me personally, but graphics wise, it doesn't look as good.
Not that it matters, because it still looks good and will probably be much more fun than Uncharted based on what we've been shown so far in my opinion, but as for people thinking this game looks graphically superior to Uncharted 2/3, I honestly don't see it, at all.
I watched the video, but it doesn't look better than what I've seen in Uncharted. Maybe it's the colors (grey, brown, dirt)and the whole "gritty" visual style, I don't know, but to me, Uncharted 2 and 3 look far superior to the last of us (graphically).
Nothing about the visuals of The Last of Us (I don't count animation as visuals) has wow'd me. In Uncharted, the snow was beautiful, the sand was beautiful, the water was beautiful, the forestry was beautiful. When I look at the last of us visuals, they just look "fine", nothing about the visuals impress me. Even the foliage doesn't look as good as U2/U3s foliage.
Don't get me wrong, I'm actually looking forward to this game more than I was with Uncharted 3, but I just don't see the whole "this is the best looking game evar!!!" thing. Maybe SOME people who say that are just riding off the hype (well deserved hype) of the previous Uncharted games and wont admit that the next naughty dog game doesn't look as good as their last game because every ND game has always looked better than the last, except TLoU (so far), and don't want to criticize anything about a naughty dog game. That's just a guess for some people though, though it usually tends to be true with the fanboys.
I'll watch the video a few more times and focus more on the environments and less on the combat, but I don't think I'll see what others claim to be seeing. I'll even ask a few of my unbiased friends what they think.
IMO this is the best looking game EVER! Not just in graphics but physics, acting, and very realistic movements and facial expression. Just amazing. Naughty Dog will probably make us pick our jaws of the ground when we see their next gen games:)
Just waiting on a Collector's Edition announcement. This looks truly phenomenal... I am curious as to see how the Infected Combat will differentiate from the Human Combat.
Anyone notice that Ellie look a lot taller in cut scenes compared to in-game actual playthroughs. I might be nitpicking but that that bothers me a little. I hope the balance it out. She should definitely be the same size. #IMO (The cutscene i'm talking about is the bill safehouse, check it out and you'll understand. feel free to disagree, not trying to troll)
EDIT: Quick to disagree but to not actually even bother comparing? Either way im buying this DAY 1! But still.. i stand by my opinion :)
I get what u mean but have u considered the possibility that maybe that scene is set months after the point which is shown in this playthrough. It could be that or maybe it is a balance issue and in which case u should hit Naughty Dog or one of their devs or community managers on twitter or facebook and let them know about your concern so they can answer u and fix this if its a issue. :)
"I hope the final build has more insects, dust etc, the air just looks too clean for an apocalyptic world imo"
This wasn't a city that was blown by some nuclear warhead. This was a city that was ravaged by the infected (by nature as opposed to some chemical) causing many people to flee, which in turn leaves the houses under disrepair with nature taking over. I am Alive was such an example, you don't see many dust in that apocalyptic scenario either. So you can't really use that as valid criticism.
However, I doubt they've near completion, there's still a lot more polish to be had (especially the graphics) since the most effort is definitely placed on the AI first, something almost no developer tries to put any priority on.
I can because it's my opinion!! The air looks too clean, apocalyptic was the only word I could think to describe it, as u say 'nature taking over' they'd be more insects and stuff, even the rotting corpses don't have any flies around them, so like I said, I hope the final build has more!
So you think that in a world with no cars and no industry the air would be dirty not clean? It is far more accurate than most films, let alone most games. The air would be fresh, and check your local park for dust and tell me what you find. Jesus, People. Corpses don't rot for ever and regardless of the rather shallow portrayal of decomposition in movies, flies wouldn't make permanent homes in leathery, fleshless corpses. No doubt there will be scenes like that, but you're thinking in cliches
I believe the reason for this is because this disaster did not just happen.
Check out how the buildings are old and crumbly and even have weeds growing out of them, those sorts of things won't just occur overnight.
Also i think it's been said/implied that Ellie has grown up in the post-apocalyptic world so that's got to give you some indication that it has been quite a number of years since the infected arrived.
Dust would have settled and bugs would have moved on. etc etc
Lack of insects would be because they are also affected by the fungi that affected the infected. Those that aren't affected would move extremely far away when it moves about on creatures they can't kill and move away from their nest.
And, lack of dust in an area covered by foliage and wet ground is typical.
I think you need to get the idea of Fallout and similar concepts out of your head.
never played fallout so that wasn't in my head, the Metro last light walkthrough has particle effects floating around the air and I just think this would look better with them too that's all!
I don't think that the animals would also be infected. I though the infection was more like a human form ,like how a human cant give give a cat a cold.
If nature took back the city, it'd actually have MUCH cleaner air than if the city was populated. As for insects, how many games other than the Last of Us will you play without judging that they "don't have enough insects"?
This game has more atmosphere than most of the games released in the past 1-2 years combined. And that's only from a 15 minute demo.
I think what you are saying makes a lot of sense maybe not the dust part although i think you should see it inside buildings but insects like mosquitos and other bugs should be present If nature took back the city. People saying the contrary makes no sense. Just my opinion.
I agree, It's a game it doesn't have to make sense it's just cosmetic, like when their clothes get wet but dry out within seconds, WOULDNT HAPPEN but its a cosmetic touch that just adds to the game!! Dont get all the disagrees!!People on here need to chill out!!
Looking good, take your sweet sweet time ND, because it looks like your onto something here. On the side not, I hope they give the option to turn off highlighting some of the objects in the environment, for a cinematic game it kinds breaks the immersion for me.
'Quick lads, folks are getting infected by plants, let's run around and throw stuff about. Don't bother to hide, make a noise and smash our houses up! Tear pages out of books and throw them from the windows into the streets!'
'Why?'
'Because that's how it looks in the movies'.
Just think about it for a moment. How would it REALLY look?
If u want to be all real life what do u think pollenates plants so they can grow and spread? Insects and they release spores too, without them plants wouldn't grow
Don't know why people would disagree with that. Lol. If the Helghast in Killzone were that smart. Then that would blow my pants off. Helghast have pretty good AI as it is too.
None of the videos I have seen has been spoilerific, so you could check some of it out. But I know what you mean, I am very careful about these things myself. I hate it when they show too much in the trailers.
I would've liked to have been with you but I'm weak. Don't give in anyway, next time you get that little nagging voice telling you just to check out a minute or two just to make sure it looks good and you're not just hyping yourself up for nothing trust me, it looks good and you're not just hyping yourself up for nothing. In fact if I told you how good it looks I'd be making it even harder for you not to watch so I won't.
Ps. Nice name if it's a reference to the song I think it's a reference to.
Thanks for your reassurance about it looking good. I think what killed Uncharted 3 for me was that I already knew about the desert from trailers and posters. Then when I played the multiplayer beta, I was already familiar with most of the maps and come to find out, those same maps are in the single player campaign. It's gonna sound weird, but I'm trying this out so that it'll be like the old days when I would go to a store and buy a game without knowing anything about it and experiencing it without the internet telling me how good or bad it is, or seeing pictures videos of it.
PS: Yes, it is referring to the song you're thinking of. I actually went and saw them a couple years ago in Portsmouth, NH. They were spectacular. Thanks for the compliment. I was thinking about it a few months ago and I realized that I should have been TriangleMan for the double meaning (triangle being a button on the PS controller). Oh well. PersonMan is good enough.
j-blaze hates ND? Shocking!!!
It reminds me of a technique as old as day we finally get to see it in games.
im not sure if its PRT precomputed radiance transfer.
or just plain old Pre Baked. like in UE
Id bet PRT the scenes look great.
I hope they finally use 50GB limit on PS3 disc
just go wild with content and dont waste it on video. that would be awesome.
But then it is all about making the most profit possible from your product in the end.

That pretty much summarizes what kind of gamer he is.
Mindless shooting is boring.
This game to me is an RTS presented in third person play. You strategize not just memorize.
glad to have a PS3. so much life on it.
Graphical detail is more than enough to make this game effective.
We still have yet to see how the run ins with the "Infected" will be.
If they have just as good AI as we've seen, then I'm guessing balls to the walls scary and intense. LMAO.
But it will be a candidate that is pretty much certain...

Ya know I've seen some of your comments before on a lot of cool games. Why are you even here when every game you comment on sucks in your opinion.
If games like Tomb Raider and this one suck then what type of games do you play exactly? Hannah Montana? Dance Central?
Great job ND, great job!
Joel: Are you ok?
Ellie: No you scared the sh#! out of me
Its all in the details.

My guess (as someone who knows nothing about game design) is that the enemies have preset patrols and a number of scripted reactions to being attacked at different points on that patrol by enemies with different weapons. Meaning if you always attack that guy in the room at around that time, the guy in the hall will be there to see you, he'll always run, you'll probably always just about see him climbing through that window and he'll always be hiding in that hallway with a Molotov if you chase him. But of course if you attack the guy outside of the room first or shoot the guy in the room from the other room you'll set off a completely different chain of events. Anyway that's my uneducated guess.
but i agree with sketchygalore.
Im just gonna assume that if you end up in this situation then the guy always hits the floor in that manner.
maybe if you kill him before you get there then yes.
whatever maybe im wrong.
but i FEEL a scrited event there, thats all. i probably should have just said that instead of that paragraph

Holy balls.................
Ammo is very scarce in the clip and environmental objects are used pretty much throughout the whole thing.
I am curious as to see how the Infected Combat will differentiate from the Human Combat.
(The cutscene i'm talking about is the bill safehouse, check it out and you'll understand. feel free to disagree, not trying to troll)
EDIT: Quick to disagree but to not actually even bother comparing? Either way im buying this DAY 1! But still.. i stand by my opinion :)
I hope they straighten that out, remember Killzone 2...

Thanks, thats all i needed to know. That make me hope that we may come into contact with infected animals.
Not that it would make a difference..
"dust etc, the air just looks too clean"
So the air looks too clean just because of lack of insects..
That's an even more ridiculous statement....
Just my opinion.
i agree. more debris would further immerse the player
Bet they'll announce it the next VGAs!
WHO'S WITH ME!
I haven't seen a single big of gameplay footage for this game yet, so it's going to be freakin' awesome when I finally get to play it.
I made the mistake of seeing too much of Uncharted 3 (and played the beta too).
Ps. Nice name if it's a reference to the song I think it's a reference to.
I think I will feel very bad when I need to kill someone in this game.

But I guess if she's not 18...
Yes..you are right
