Though the next generation of gaming consoles is, for the most part, a far-off abstraction, GameStop has already begun its transformation to prepare for the deluge of hardware and software coming from Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft.
SCE America CEO Jack Tretton said in June that quality is more important than getting to market first, stating: "We've never been first, we've never been cheapest, it's about being best." This Is why I respect Sony but they need to be the first real next gen console out. They can't let MS beat them to it. Otherwise it would just might be a repeat of this gen.
Yeah Jack said that but at the same time I remember Sony saying they wanted to beat Microsoft to the market first this time around. If what GameStop says is true, it's hard to say which company will be releasing next year and which one wouldn't.
My guess would be Sony since i too heard that they wanted to be first.
It has to be the new Xbox. Why would Sony release their one first? They have a lot of big titles that are coming to the PS3 next year: God of War Ascension, Last of Us, Last Guardian (hopefully), GTA V, Metal Gear Solid: GZ and probably even more I missed out. I really think that they should take their time on the new console, just like they did with the PS3. It might've been the last, might've been the most expensive, but hey, look at the 360 and PS3 now and tell me which one is collecting dust and which one is pumping out the games.
It most likely will be the new xbox. That doesn't mean ps4 won't be right behind it. However if they miss the holiday season then it won't have a great jumpstart like it could.
It wouldn't be that hard to guess, Microsoft has all their developers working on next gen games, opened a ton of new studios over the last few years and none of them have released a game for the Xbox 360. The leaked Microsoft documents that state they will release in 2013, the fact that they have the oldest hardware right now, and the fact that they don't have a single game scheduled to release after March of 2013. I'm not doubting Sony releasing in 2013 as well, but they are still churning out PS3 games and trying to help Vita get some sort of market share, if I were to guess, I'd say they want a new generation to start the least.
Sonys only big problem this Gen was 1.Online 2.Price 3.Controller (to Some) Not Launch Date. But they still managed to sell over 65million and growing.
@black 911 Really? It was just the price. If Sony had released a reasonable price for it systems, we would have been seeing all gen what we've been seeing for the PS3 for the past two years as far as sales.
3.Controller (to Some)
4.Release date(it's easier to attain a customer who is new, than to get a customer to buy a PS3 when he already has a Console).
5.Marketing or rather the lack of it.
6.Horrible launch line up.
@black 911, yes you may stand corrected.
@black911 How do you say their "only" problem is 3 problems?
I vote Sony launches the exact same day as MS. It'll be a fun battle, but Sony really needs some stellar launch titles this time around...
@black911 Sony's only problem this gen is they don't understand America. They don't understand that in America people buy products based on marketing. You don't need to spend money on a lot of games, you only need 1 or 2 big ones with big marketing budgets.
I doubt either console will get a big lead next gen. The 360's early launch clearly helped the system take off, and both MS and Sony know it. As such, smart money says that both new consoles will launch within the same general window (I wouldn't expect them more than 60 days apart).
@-Mika- give it a rest already, just play video games and relax. who gives a shit which system sells better its about playing games not sales for a company you have no stake in...
I care. If you didn't realize. Sales do matter for gamers and the stock holders of the company. For example, Us Vita owners would love more sales for the handheld because then that would mean we'll get more third party support. Same applies to the PS4. That the console I plan on buying so being first and getting alot of sales would mean more third party support and more AAA exclusives from sony. Also here another example you can relate to. If the original half life or any other valve game in the past sold like crap constantly. Valve would most likely not be around today and you would have never got a sequel to that awesome game. So again sales do matter for us gamers. Please keep that mind before you make another comment like that.
People on N4G only care when it's convenient for them...
Sales don't matter to the average gamers. The core gamers may care but most don't. In the reflection of life it's nothing. Just another thing for people to compete over. In general I think competition is good because it forces improvements you wouldn't get.
I agree with Blu_flower in one way but not another. The trouble is that people make it a competition and we end up discussing who outsold who. That is of no consequence whatsoever. However, getting decent sales is. It's not about beating someone, it's about getting enough consoles out there to warrant 3rd party support. So yes, it doesn't matter which console releases first or which console sells the most, what matters is that it sells well enough to get support. Unfortunately this distinction gets distorted when talking about sales figures and even I sometimes get drawn into it. On a side note: with the Wiiu getting a bigger storage medium, it's imperative that the 720 does too, otherwise we'll get the same situation we had this gen where 3rd parties hacked huge chunks off their games and then sold them as DLC later. No thanks In fact, the Wiiu could help lengthen this gen simply because devs have the option of making a 360 version and a PS3 version of any games coming to it (once the ports have run out). Clearly Wiiu devs are going to have to cater for the traditional controller too, so there's no reason for that extra screen with the ports. There are some workarounds as I've mentioned before, but regardless, Wiiu devs have that option
"We've never been first, we've never been cheapest, it's about being best." ...It's that mentality that's going to make sony file for bankruptcy. Investing on vita, gaikai for $380 million, an other $600 console in the making. they need to slow down, they're spending too much on their investments. they need to make back some of that. what ever happened to the old $299 console days?
In my opinion, it's not the release date that made the PS3 not as successful as they had hoped, it's the speed at which devs picked up the technology. I think if they focus on making it easy for the devs, then they can come back easily next gen.
@Jockamo no, only reason Sony didn't dominate this gen was that $599 price tag. $399 launch price and the PS3 would've been doing PS2 numbers, maybe more @the bastards Sony is a high end electronics manufacturer. they only know one thing and that's to build quality electronics, and you pay for what you get. finding a reason for Sony's recent slump of form is difficult, but it definitely isn't because they take their time to make quality goods, and then sell them at high prices. it's been working for them for about two decades, and has now suddenly stopped. I blame complacency and lack of advertising but yeah it's hard.
Yeah that was a pretty arrogant opening price...you're probably right.
They were first last gen though. If you ignore Dreamcast. Its honestly hard to say when Sony will launch next generation. They are focusing on making Vita successful and making PS3 as profitable as possible. But yes, it will hurt them if they are last out the gate.
in other words be a fool, dont wait for a new xbox or ps, waste your money and buy the wiiu.. smart inseption, make people think on not waiting for a real next gen console. plus f&^ what ever Sony or m$ says they lie and lie over and over again... i will be really mad they they don't really give us a real true amazing new teach.... all this waiting is to much already
why can't I buy a Wiiu, and wait for the shocker, The Next Xbox and PS4. Nintendo this year, most likely microsoft next year, and sony the year after. I'm a gamer first i'll find a way to spend the money on all three. To many great games exclusive to each company. No need hate on any system. And if you can't afford to get them all, then pick the one or two that you think will be the best for you. only a fool would pass up a system based on graphics alone. base it on the games.
true some people will keep buying ps3 and 360 even once the ps4 is out... that does not change the fact that you could buy old teach "wiiu"
Mika said "They can't let MS beat them to it. Otherwise it would just might be a repeat of this gen." Honest question, why wouldn't Sony want a repeat of this gen? The PS3 has handily outsold the 360 since they were available head 2 head despite being the most expensive console by far during the worst economic downturn we've seen since the great depression. That's not a secret. I'm sure they would have loved to see a repeat of the PS2 but the way it's going now the PS3 will probably break 100 million in the next 2-3 years.
They're still in last place though 6 years in, no matter how you spin it. Nobody gets in a competition thinking it's ok to be last. You aim for first place and that's what Sony were aiming for when they launched the PS3. They never would have imagined that things would turn out they way they did.
Your smoking some serious crack kid. Sources? Didnt think so.
This darkrider kid sure does live in lala land. That's how desperate these sony fanboys have gotten. The evidence and facts are clear as day, yet they refuse to believe them and stick with their fantasy world. These kids actually believe in their own lies.
I dont care who comes out first, my ps3 has plenty to play until ps 4 releases. So i can wait comfortably. Plus, with graphics like MGS Ground Zeroes, Last of Us, and Watch Dogs, i'm content. No way i'll buy a microsoft system, with their lack of exclusives, xbox live fee's, and kinect-only support. If they fix those issues, then i'll get both next gen.
You know hopefully Sony goes last because being first isnt always good. I mean they will be the new kids in the block plus i bet if they were the ones releasing in 14 then it will be in the first few months. It could be that they are very secretive with info on their next console.
Both companies have "locked" the specs, first chip are going to production late this year and there is no way one will be 2014. I'll believe EA CEO over GS guy any day of the week.
Sonys only problem this Gen was 1.Online 2.Price 3.Controller (to Some) Not Launch Date. But they still managed to sell over 65million and growing.
Cause suddenly being first matters..... (See what I did there YOUTUBERS!!! I HATE YOUR "FIRST" COMMENTS!!!!!)
Sorry bUt both are important. Sony already lost a lot of market share compared to ps2 days. After 7 years being first to the market + quality should be there. They are not building a rocket ship.
What...take the PS2 off the shelves? NOOooo wait until a bit after the PS4 launches at least? That way we can reminisce and be like "Dang, we've come a long way! :D" But oh well, guess they gotta prepare stuff ahead of time.. About Sony trying to be first; I think it would be interesting to see how it plays out, but I still want them to keep the quality or increase it even more. Here's to next-gen folks.
i think there refering to the Wii U
Nah Wii U is suppose to release this year.
ahh ok well ms has had the most slip ups so its probably them.
That doesn't mean that he isn't far enough out of the loop to be referencing the Wii U. Think about it, no date at E3, and the fact that this guy PROBABLY doesn't troll N4G...He could totally be expecting it next year.
Wii u also might be that console. I mean until this day many still ponder about that system and it has no hype what so ever. So maybe nintendo might release next yr instead.
Wii U is out the end of this year.
I am excitied for E3 2013 for the Sony and Microsoft conferences, then we will find out if it is one console or two for 2013
I'll buy both of them after a while, but again, the console with the most exclusive that are NOT FPS, I'm buying it.
who cares. Wii U is the only console for 2013
Wii U should be out this year...
It would make since to release the Xbox 2013, then ps4 2014 it will give us three years to get excited about new console releases. With the wii u coming out this year. If you cram 2 consoles in one years they both will sell less.
it will be sony but this statement really means nothing its up to m$ and sony. I don't see 1 coming out to far ahead of the other(months)
Like gamestop would know. they are a seller, and they have no more clue when X product is coming to the market than anyone else. Both consoles are still being devloped, and as such the companies themselves cant put a real date out there yet. they have a target, and those dates can shift depending on if they pull in dates to hit a better spot.
Wouldn't expect to hear these sorts of comments from a CEO unless they heard something though. That said this could always change even if true at this point in time.
and we have also seen CEOs (or i think it was) talk about abortion which has nothing to do with chicken. *chip manufacturer* doesnt know when the chips will be done, the consoles are not in production, they are still in development from many angles. theres no possible way Gamestop knows more than an estimated time table. the CEO could very well be right, Sony could be aiming for Spring 2014, Sony has moved most of their big titles to the spring after all. We will see.
As long as its microsofts sytem next year I will be happy that's the only one I care about!
considering MS hardware issues with the 360, I would wait with them.
So should people wait on PS4 do to PSN hack issues?
Not so this time round, MS partners this time round may well be SAMSUNG or TOSHIBA as SAMSUNG i believe are responsible for building the XBOX 360 (S)SLIM (SAMSUNG relied strong on MS when is came to launching there HDTV.) As MS begins to venture into the hardware production market like Apple. If MS builds the consoles itself we may see some the of the problems return, but i would'nt bother holding my breath on seeing the return of RROD. The bottom line is that M$ and Sony have learnt a great deal from this generation, now lets see this apply it in the next. I look forward to all the new IPs on there way, Sony has this gen lead the way of exclusives and M$ Lead by Time delay DLC Exclusives, i don't believe that will happen next gen, M$ has bought too many new studios and opened many new ones too and we are yet to see what IPs are coming. Like i have stated Sony has exclusives but still fails in the important part money, that is what is important Sony are strongly in the RED and M$ are sitting pretty in BLACK(WONGA). Remember this nothing in life is for free.
if i had to guess then i would say sony would come out 1st this time, seeing as how they have fallen behind microsoft in hardware and software sales in the last several months, and after their operating loss last quarter they certainly would need to get a jump on things cause they have a lot to make up for especially if nintendo ends up leading the way through next summer.
I believe the PS4 and Xbox720 will offer what those companies do best, I will buy both XBOX 720 and PS4 first minute they're available. I can't wait. I'm hoping to see uncharted 4, killzone 4,Gears of war 4, Halo 5, Forza on launch day for ps4/XBOX 720
Halo 5,Anniversay 2 and Forza next are already confirm as launch titles, Gears will not be a launch but a summer one, it all depends on when the console is released.
I don't really care who or when because I personally am in no rush. I have close to 30 disc games I haven't even opened yet ( just got to ME2 ) and then add in the PS3/PSN games I have gotten from plus and the games still coming like BioShock Infinite, TR, Borderlands 2 to name a few and I could go years without needing a new console.
O.,O I envy you T_T But still , it wont harm you if it released even if its this year , the early it comes the better for you people that just bought the ps3 or didnt plqy the games they want for 6 years >.< When you finish all your games in ps3 the ps4 will have hundreds of great games , updates which mewns fixes , bring more features , drop prices to everything...Etc You understand what im saying ¿~? its better for everyone .
bahahaha... ouya... good one.
Well, it fits what Pachter said: http://www.computerandvideo...
I think the timing in 2013 is just right for a new console. Being first is important. The differences in the tech are not THAT big in one year, so this will result in some minor advantages for one manufacturer - just like this gen. Except one manufacturer does not want to make a big leap (like Wii U). But newer tech will always be more expensive and you are trying to sell a more expensive product to a consumer who has friends that already play the competitors console, which is a few bucks cheaper and already built a decent library. Releasing one year later would be an uphill battle, especially when your biggest franchises are not available at launch. Just imagine: E3 2013: Xbox 3 announced / Gears of War 4 coming in 2014 with graphics you just have not seen before. holiday 2013: Xbox 3 launches for $399 with a decent launch lineup. E3 2014: PS4 announced! / Halo 5 announced for 2015! 2014: Gears of War 4 releases exclusively for Xbox 3! PS4 launches for $449 with a decent lineup. That scenario is an uphill battle for Sony. Of course it would be an uphill battle for MS as well, if they just changed positions.
Don't forget the 2014 launch date for Microsoft's xbox glasses
PS3 has outsold 360 since PS3 launched. What hurt Sony was the lost market share because they were selling a 600 dollar system (introducing blu-ray format) when the competition was cheaper. For most of this gen they have been the most expensive. They won't make that mistake again with the price next-gen. As for releasing first ahead of MS.....I don't really know
