To reveal or not to reveal: When should Xbox 720 & Playstation 4 be unveiled?

When do you believe the next-box and playstation 4 should be announced? Is there a better time or event than another to unveil them? Is E3 to late? Is PAX-East the perfect time? What do you think? (Industry, Microsoft, Next-Gen, Sony)

Pax East? umm....NO. It needs to be in a venue that gets lots of media coverage not lots of gamer coverage. Pax just isnt a good venue for hardware launches...East or Prime.

It wouldn't matter as much as you think it would. The word will get out ridiculously fast whenever and wherever we have official confirmation and showing.

That and 6+ months before release, and everyone who wants to know will.

Agreed, and even those who don't want to know will. These type of things do not stay quite and all media will pick this story up regardless of where it's announced. I would like to see E3 be more about all of the games each console will have. That will sort of make things a bit of a competition as it already is. How epic would that be? Both systems showing off their best titles at the same event. Sign me up for that.

Oh I get what you are saying. Most assuredly the word would get out. But Pax just isnt that kind of show. The console makers want press to be there so they can make a big splash with coverage. I know some press are there but its not the level of E3. E3 the worldwide press comes. Pax...its mostly US press and limited at that.

@Dlacy13g, I see you point on that one. Worldwide press will certainly be at E3 and I guess not so much at PAX-East. I'm also thinking along the lines of time before the console releases. I think people ultimately want to see what games are going to be released with each console and what they will look like on each system. So think E3 would serve a greater purpose for that versus just for the announcement of the systems. It'd kind of feel like things were crammed if they did both during the same conference. Why not stretch the great news out a bit? That's what Nintendo is doing in a way.

2010 would have been nice

Agreed.

The only reason (IMHO) we haven't had announents yet, is Christmas sales expectations. It would be counter productive to announce beforehand. I think we will get the nod in January from one or the other and then things will hot up nicely.

As you say, it would be fantastic to see Sony and MS go "head to head" on the games front at next years E3.

I understand that they don't want to undermine their own Christmas sales but with the Wii u launching wouldn't it be sensible to announce sooner?

How many people would wait for the Xbox or ps4 if it was announced?
