Why The Metal Gear Solid Movie Is a Bad Idea

Pixels or Death's Patrick Lindsey talks about the recent announcement of the Metal Gear Solid movie, and why it's not as great an idea as everyone wants to believe:

"While the MGS series certainly has some cinematic aspects, it is still very much a game; just explaining the nuances of the plot alone has taken four AAA titles, each running around 12 hours of playtime. And that’s without any of the characterization or development of setting that you get naturally just through the act of playing." (Culture, Kojima Productions, Metal Gear Solid)

Im not really all that excited about this movie since I don't think it going to be directed by Michael Bay. He did a great job with the Transformer movies. I feel that this movie is just not going to be exciting without him.
I sincerely hope you are not serious right now
Irishguy95  +   264d ago
Do you seriously even need to ask that? Of course he's joking, he can't possibly be saying that truthfully. His sentence isn't even possible
lol relax boys Mika's joking. Good one lol she got us

-eerie silence- *cricket chirps*

You were joking right? :D

-silence continues- *chirp-ing continues*

right Mika? :o

-silence turns awkward- *cricket faceplams*

This could be good, the only reason i believe this movie has a chance is because Kojima Productions are going to be involved very closely to make this movie, and Kojima ain't going to let this movie be bad

Watch the Meryl and Johnny cutscene again and tell me you're not in the least bit worried. Personally, I am going to be cautiously optimistic until I see it. Don't get me wrong, some of the writing and cutscenes were great but others were just gut wrenching to watch.
Transporter47  +   264d ago
In all honesty i had no problem with it at all. Some people don't like it, that's fine, and if you're worried because of one scene idk man seems like nitpicking

Because it's Hollywood, they always ruin video game to movie adaptions. I'm also sick of people who choose different actors for the parts of Solid Snake and Liquid Snake.. They are twins, so if they aren't played by the same actor in the MGS movie then it will be stupid.

It may not be based around MGS anyway, it might be based in Zanzibar Land with Big Boss and Solid Snake. If they do go through with it, my top choice to play Snake is Josh Holloway, though his rugged looks would fit to play Naked Snake more.

I really wished they wouldn't make a movie and just leave it alone.. I had high hopes for Max Payne and that film was terrible, and so are those RE movies.

If you could get the Coen brothers to direct this I think it would be amazing.
TopDudeMan  +   264d ago
I have to see it, but I'm setting my bar at cautiously optimistic.

The MGS movie needs to be made by an intelligent director who understands that the characters, story and staying true to the source material is most important, not somebody who thinks huge set pieces for idiots to galk at is what makes a great movie.

Cutting a 20 hour experience down to 2 hours... yh I'm not that hyped
azshorty2003  +   264d ago
It never works out. That's why I prefer TV series. At least that way you can flesh out the story properly.
ZombieKiller  +   264d ago
Yeah really. WHAT Mika?

Anyway....I don't think it's a bad idea.
Yes, game adaptations of movies and movie adaptations of games are horrible. But that's only because they choose crappy direction! It's all a hunt for money. Uwe Boll is in charge of half of them anyway! That RIGHT THERE proves me right.

In order to make a successful gaming movie you need a 2 in 1 deal. You need someone who can direct, that is ALSO a very big fan of the game.
In this case, MGS being Kojima's flagship saga, his "baby" if you will...this isn't a hunt for money. This is more of a fan service. I believe he would not allow this movie to be bad...ESPECIALLY judging by the amount of cancellations this movie has ALREADY seen. Not to mention the fact that I bet he will be HEAVILY involved. Fans wouldn't let him make someone else in charge anyway. Kojima does what the fans want, because the fans adore him.
I bet this movie will work. I despise these gaming movies, trust me. The Resident Evil movie was OK, and that is a stretch IMO. RE1 was good, but after that, they got crappier and crappier, but look at the company. CAPCOM. Day 1 DLC and all that already tells you guys they're money hungry. Trying to get that "COD Crowd". Getting Paul WS Anderson was mistake number 1 right there. He's made the best of B-rated movies.
I don't think that Kojima would let the MGS name try to sell a crappy product like a movie. Maybe a keychain, or Iphone case or something. I bet he will even attract people and generate fans with the movie!

Have a voice actor play the part of the character in a hollywood movie!? Are you serious!? Might as well just post the damn thing on youtube for people to see it for free too, right?! I understand that no hollywood director on this earth cannot re-inact even the cut scenes from MGS1 on playstation. But, im telling you....if they can make those horrible RESIDENT EVIL movies (The japanese CGI movies by Capcom are 100x better), then I think hollywood can do a decent job with a metal gear film.
Dogswithguns  +   264d ago
It has to be as good as the MGS games.. or else don't make it.
xBigxBossx  +   264d ago
I think it would be a wise idea to steer clear of Big Boss or snake since they are way to recognized and developed characters.. But Hugh Jackman would be a good snake. I think doing something along the lines of D-Day and The Boss and the cobra unit. I mean the boss killing the sorrow, giving birth on the battlefield and just d-day overall would be a great way for Hollywood to toy with MGS.
Summons75  +   264d ago
I'll wait till after I watch it before I decide if it was a good idea or not. I won't think that while it's in PREPRODUCTION and barely and details are known about it!
juaburg  +   264d ago
Frank Darrebont as the director? the more i think about it, the more i fancy the idea. Need a director with a fcuk load of brains to pull this off. Im a hugeeee MGS fan, and a film student. To be honest, I dont want to see an MGS film, atleast in uncapable hands.
Parappa  +   264d ago
It's still a better idea than Rising.
tiffac008  +   264d ago
Well Avi Arad is producing the film and it sounds like Kojima Pro is going to get closely involved. So that's a good start.

I think they want Christopher Nolan to direct the film.
