Vita Firmware Update Locks Memory Cards

A poster at popular internet discussion forum NeoGAF has unearthed some news that Vita owners might find somewhat troublesome. The newest firmware update puts the system’s memory cards under even more strict lock and key. (Industry, PS Vita, Sony Entertainment Network)

So they're trying to stop people from sharing downloaded games... right? I can see that, but totally locking them basically to one device? Sounds like a jerk move to me.
knifefight  +   267d ago
Yeah. It's a change that won't impact everyone, but there are a lot of people out there who like to browse the different things on the different PSN stores. This makes another memory card pretty much a requirement for doing that.
GribbleGrunger  +   267d ago
If you wanted multiple accounts you had to have different memory cards anyway, so this is nothing. If people are going to complain that they can't browse another region but never had any intention of ever downloading games from there, then it's a pretty pathetic thing to moan about

We just got an incredible update and guess what articles we'll be getting over the next few weeks. Gamers sicken me

I actually already thought this was the case, because it's not exactly easy to switch accounts on PS Vita. It's not a big problem for me, but I would have liked a multiple sign-in option like on PS3.

@GribbleGrunger
Actually you could change regions without having multiples memory cards .'ive done it many times

"We just got an incredible update and guess what articles we'll be getting over the next few weeks. Gamers sicken me "

This is what i've been saying before, forums seem to gather the most pessimistic and negative people out there. You can have a list of features and if 10 are good and 1 is bad you will see certain people flock to that one negative while ignoring the 10 positive features. Same thing within the comment sections. 10 people will say nice things and 1 person will have something bad to say and often most replies will be centered around that one negative comment. Which of course gives the negative person more attention, and with attention becomes power to them. Even reviews are not immune. If most reviews are posiitive and a few aren't it seems like the negative reviews get more attention. Even within a positive review if they made a comment that is negative people focus on that more. Why is that?

My feeling is there's a group out there that feeds off of negativity and are likey to overshadow everyone else. They seem to be more determined. Another reason could be it's more likely somone will go out of their way to give negative feedback on something rather than positive feedback. How many times have people played online and left negative feedback but never leave positive feedback?

As for the memory cards i can understand why Sony took this approach. It's the same thing with ITunes, you can't buy from other regions with your account. Publishers like to control their content and games/music/video may have different release dates and content in various regions. This makes things rather difficult in this day and age because consumers are more aware of what's going on since we are all connected online now. We also live in an era of self-titlement where we think there should be no boundaries or control. So the focus can't all be towards Sony because often time it's the publishers that want these barricades put in place.

No we didn't, i had only 1 memory card with games from both accounts and it worked fine, you just had to choose the option not to reset memory card and just reset the Ps Vita.

Is sony trying to kill the vita itself?

Overpriced memoery cards now this?

Vita is a huge fail, Sony should just kill it off now and write it off as a lost and just let Nintendo have the handheld market.

Final Fantasy X HD
Killzone: Mercenary
Bioshock Vita

Persona 4: The Golden Edition
Playstation All-stars Battle Royale
Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified

And we'll all be fine. Perseverance people! If the 3DS did it, so can the Vita!

So if I want to sign into another account just pop the memory card out and pop in another right? And the problem is? Oh right.. Less thievery. Tragic! If Sony was smart they would put the Playstation Home app on the Vita because I'm willing to bet they will buy it right up. No reason why they can't either, the lowest cache is 3 gigs.. Boom.. Even 4 gigers can play.

knifefight  +   267d ago
If by "less thievery" you mean "less money from people buying things off of multiple PSN stores," then yeah I guess. A lot of people buy content from all over the world. Check the source of the info.:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum...

Maybe it's not YOUR lifestyle to do so, but that doesn't make someone else's life any less legitimate. It might not have an impact on YOU, but it has an impact on a LOT of people who are legitimately using Sony's services and PAYing for it all the while. =/

Edit: Trying to bullshit? Come on, man, be real here.
Forcing people interesting in *paying* to download more content into *also* paying for a second memory card is the bullshit, many would say. ;)

Before, a single memory card would do the job, but now, one needs two in order to do the same thing. The impact here is on legitimate consumers.

Bowzabub  +   267d ago
Then you would legitimately put another card in. Might not be your lifestyle but it is for a lot of people. These things are happening because people have taken advantage of legitimate consumers perks.. You and I both know this, who you trying to bullsh!t? Look, I agree it sucks but people (I use this term loosely) have ruined for others. The only reason that the PSP outsells a device 3 times better than it is because it has had the dogsh!t haxxoredlolololoo out of it.

Depends what you class as "legitimately" using a service.
I'm pretty sure Sony just want one PSN ID per user. If you have multiple accounts for multiple countries, then I am not even sure if that is properly allowed. I mean my US account is definitely not legit, my address is in a McDonald's.
Most people abuse the use of PSN accounts from other countries because exchange rates and game prices are normally cheaper in US. There is probably less than 0.01% of users who have a proper legitimate reason for having multiple accounts.

Oh, I wish you could respond to this for everyone to see..

And as for me, I am against Sony for all the money making choices that are bad for them as a company, not just gaming. Money is being lost!

These memory cards are now bad for casual gamers (price compared to other storage). And now hardcore players who use the vita in a little different way then the mainstream.

Sad... I think that vita now can only hope to break even.... And that is the truth.

I have always been allergic to this multi account/memory card gestion with the Vita.
What does it cost them to have the same system as PS3 ? i dont understand.

I have my main account that i cant use because i moved to another country so i cant buy anything from it and my wife had hers because she's from the country i moved in so the multi account is kind of a number one NEED feature for me. i dont wanna buy two vitas for this, NO WAY ! @What do they think is going to happen? Hmmm? the very fact that sony and 3rd party developer's and
Look it's very simple why they are doing this, And it has nothing to do with trying to screw the consumer, its about keeping what little bit of money they could get and Making sure they at least get a chance to keep it! remember what happened to the PSP?

because the Piracy outweighed the money they would have from return on investment. Not enough sales to over come the loss. Sony's software does not sell very well, and people cannot have it both way's. You cannot say on one hand that, their software is not that good, than go right ahead an Pirate it because, it's Sony and why pay Sony for 2nd class software! because that's exactly what the consumer is saying with downloading ISO's off the internet. when the development resources, to invest in making the game does not get high ROI's than you can expect what you can expect to happen.

What do they think is going to happen? Hmmm? the very fact that sony and 3rd party developer's and publisher's put in money and time, cost's to production, cost's in building their development tool base, so that the small minority can make it easy to steal the result's of their work? but..but Nintendo get's hacked, and they still sell a ton, well Sony is not freaking Nintendo!. People want it both way's, and yet it seem's the consumer's would rather steal than pay for it..but..but Homebrew, and now Sony have made that a reality with the PlaystationMobile platform, that by the way works on the PSVita, and people cannot understand why they are locking the PSVita's memory card? really? Has people just already let it slip their d@mn freaking Mind about what happened to the PSP?

Look at the Game's that get released on the next Nintendo system and Look at the Games that Get released on the PSVita. do you think for a d@mn freaking min, that they cost the same d@mn money to make? unless it's a 3rd party Game, and the 3RD party game is multi-platform release, many of the PSVita games cost alot more money to produce than the Nintendo offering's, just by the fact there is not one and i mean this with not as an attack on the Nintendo platform, i am talking not a SINGLE D@MN GAME THAT COMES EVEN CLOSE, to the investment for development as it does for Uncharted GA: on the Nintendo 3DS but..but that's why Sony is loosing so much money, and that is also why Sony is locking those d@mn memory card's, The point is Sony's offering those type of game experiences that no other HandHeld Game system is offering, it may not be for everyone but it is someing that they can offer to Everyone. That's the point they can offer it does not mean people will buy it , it just means they can off those experiences for the person with that handheld. and that's why they are doing just that. To make Money, you may say that they must not be doing a very good job of it, well they seem to making sure what little bit of money that they do make on their iP's is at least protected as to give them a chance to make some money back on their investment. this part of the industry was established on a hobby, it by all right's set based on entertainment, and just like movie theatres many consumer's some times try to sneak in trying not to pay for the entertainment. Many times people just say, well they have to account for Loss, which is true, but after a while maybe they get fed up and not offer these types of experiences? would Microsoft offer a Handheld that offer's something like Uncharted? or How about Nintendo? would there 1st party offer something like that?

the Only one doing that is Sony! asking for some money in return for that part of offering is once again not for everyone, but they are offering to everyone!

Sad you can't have 2 or 3 cards work. I have a 16gb card with only 9gb left. I just have to use it sparingly.
WAR_MACHINE77  +   267d ago
No, it means if you switch to a different account on your vita you will need to reformat the card or not be able to use any of the content on it. You'll be fine if you only have one account and you can have as many cards as you want on any account. This is just to keep people from swapping cards to share games. If you have more than one card but one account,no problem. If you have accounts in more than on region but only one card... that'll be a problem.

It's really a shame.

All of the potential this platform could of been or ever will have been is gone.

The one platform that would of got me back into handheld gaming just denied me of re-entering that space yet again.

Here sweetie, you forgot your crown.

While I'm not buying a Vita and not trying to convince anyone that they should, your reasons for not partaking are pretty flimsy. Sounds like you decided you weren't going to get one first, and then started looking for reasons to support the decision after the fact.

- Accusing brand new systems of having "no games" is something that always sounds like Charlie Brown's mom when I hear it. Especially in this case. Not only does Vita have a relatively strong release lineup for *any console (seriously, name one of these consoles that releases with a bunch of AAAs that you're comparing this to), but there are a slew of games for it on the horizon in the near-future. And here's a secret: libraries only grow with time.

- Too expensive for some individuals' budgets maybe, but not "too expensive" for what the device is, not by a longshot. New and impressive hardware isn't something that you can find in the bargain bin normally, I don't know why you think a Vita should be cheap.

- It hasn't been hacked, you mean? That it's a closed platform? Does it not have room to hang fuzzy dice from? I don't get it....

- "More" implies "than". I'm not sure what you're referencing aside from this article, and while I think they should allow people a few accounts as w/ PS3, the measure seems to be in place for legit reasons. It's not a reason to not-own the platform, inconvenient as it might be for some people.

All the potential of the platform is still there, the only one denying you is you.

Sales speak differently.

My friend.

:)

-Look at E3 2012 and then compare now on the game line up front.
(Only 10 games announced. Not enough.)

-Yes, PS Vita is expensive especially when you take into account it costs about the same as a PS3 or Xbox 360.
(Games are only $10 less then a full retail console or PC game.)

-Lack of customization refers to using off brand accessories at cheaper prices for your own gain.
(You could buy an 8GB flash card online for $8 on Amazon but Sony is charging $30 for it. LOL.)

-More restrictions.
(This is factual. Look at this article for example limiting your memory card to only one account.)

Not to mention sales are slacking badly for PS Vita.

You've yet to debunk my statements.

Either your blind or don't want to admit the facts that Sony isn't handling the Vita very well on all fronts.

:)
FredEffinChopin  +   267d ago
"Sales speak differently."

Thanks, I was hoping you'd abandon the facade of a gamer who wants a great new handheld, and show your true colors as a Sony troll, hater, or just general ballbreaker. You also incorrectly assume that a participator in your fanboy hatred when you try to hurt my feelings in that first comment. Save it dude, I'm a gamer, not someone who has bick-dick contests with others companies' sales figures.

- E3 2012 was just a couple of months ago... But here, let me teach you how count to 10.
http://www.ign.com/games/up...

- 360 and PS3 are aging pieces of hardware whose production costs has been drastically reduced since they released, allowing for cheaper prices. The low-end PS3 was $500 at release, and they took a huge loss on it. While I have no firsthand knowledge of Vita production costs, it's safe to say that Sony is following their usual strategy of selling hardware at a loss to get advanced hardware out there at a reasonable cost. Again, expensive to you or I maybe, but when put in its proper context, the Vita is not expensive.

- While you're talking about it like it's a 3rd party peripheral thing, your issue seems to be with memory card costs. They are expensive. Congrats, you offered a single legit reason behind your statement, across two posts full of bullet-points.

- Yeah, I said *aside from this article*. You're pluralizing again ("restrictions"), so I'm wondering what all these things are that Vita is keeping people from doing. Are you saying that this single thing that only marginally effects a small group of users is one of the reasons you've been opposed to Vita since release? Can I borrow your crystal ball some time?

Troll on kid.

I do not see the big deal with this at all. Sure it is gonna be more of a pain to switch accounts but at least it still gives you that option.

All your data can be backed up onto a PC or a PS3 system so why not do so before one switches accounts over to like a japanese one. Heck most of us Vita owners have that 4GB memory card, why not use that as a 'dummy' card to switch accounts, download what you need onto it. Transfer it to your PC or PS3 & than move it over to the card you wanted.

Again it is more annoying & a hassle to do things now but it can still be done...isn't that all that matters?
SAE  +   267d ago
I'm buying vita today , i find this and the account thing sooooo annoying , why sony doing this to us ?.. The ps3 works great doing these things , if they are saying we will copy games then they are wrong , people that want copy games won't go and buy a ps3 if it cant do it so they are actully getting more money ...

Now they are annoying us all , the people that pirate and the ones that buy original , i never thought the vita would be like this , disappointing -.- , we dont get everything promised such as the remote , alots of problems , the accounts thing and now this

I want your opinion , does it worth it ?.
izumo_lee  +   267d ago
I understand why gamers are questioning some of the things that Sony does like this account deal. I get it but being the reasonable person i am i also believe people have to put themselves in Sony's shoes.

This gen they have not endured the success they previously had. With that said they are not as profitable as before hence trying to save some money will help alleviate some of the stress they are under. Sure we have to take the brunt of these but it is a small sacrifice we have to take until Sony & the PS brand is back to where it was at.

Back to the Vita issue. Like most PS brands that Sony has released there is a plan of action for it hence the 10 year plan they have in place. The Vita is no different. It will evolve over time with these firmware updates. Love them or hate them there is no denying that firmwares has the ability to add & change things for the system. Yes we were promised remote play but it does not mean that we will not see it at all, there are usually hoops that Sony has to jump through to make it work mainly for 3rd party games.

I hate to bring up the 3DS but the Vita does a lot of things that the 3DS does not but i do not see Nintendo fans complain too much about their system of choice. Most of them are happy with what they have so why can't we be the same?
SAE  +   267d ago
we already sacrificing by giving more money then they deserve , ps3 games are expensive , the console is expensive , we don't need to sacrifice a thing , they should not us , there are things that won't effect them such as the accounts thing , we just gonna change accounts so we can play our games that we pay for them , why acting greed on this ? they should at least explain why they are doing it and how they will fix it >.<' ...

do you know how annoying playing in a new account ?.. i have been playing on my account that doesn't have a psn store since 2007 , now i can't use it in vita , it effect us a lot , so imagine if we will have to buy the games we bought again just to play in one account ...

i still don't understand the accounts thing and the memory thing so i don't know if it will bother me , reading it feels like unjustic , more like a politic feeling to me xD
ThanatosDMC  +   267d ago
I think you're confusing some thing. You can still use that one account or even a separate account. Just have another memory stick to prevent the hassle of reformatting.

Also, what could you have bought on the PS store that requires two accounts?
SAE  +   266d ago
My main account doesnt have a store because sony didnt make one for my country , when i created it i didnt know about these things...

I have 1 us account and 1 uk account because of the demos/beta/dlc that depend on the game region /release time/ and depend on the card i get

So i want to play all my games (that i bought from the other accounts) on my main account , these accounts only for download , is it possible to do that on vita ?..

tiffac008  +   267d ago
Okay I must be a total n00b because I did not even knew there was a way to change PSN account without swapping the memory card in the Vita.

I have always assumed that you need a different memory card per PSN account in the first place. I have always thought this was the original intention from the get go.
ThanatosDMC  +   267d ago
Now there's a logical comment. People are whining over nothing especially those who do not have a Vita.
theEx1Le  +   266d ago
Here's a logical comment for you. I own a vita. I am also generally quite content (I wouldn't say happy but as a sony early adopter I knew what I was investing in) with it. But this update is rubbish. Crap excuse's to add "security" that screws the normal user over.

So I either have to A. Backup and reformat everything before I sign into one of my other several store accounts (which I have content on) or B. Fork out even more money on the overpriced proprietary cards so that I have one spare. Yeah, totally hassle free.
tiffac008  +   266d ago
Well I can honestly say that I am actually surprise that the Vita was able to have multiple PSN accounts on 1 memory card before this update.

Because I swear, when the Vita first came out everyone was saying this was not possible and you had to buy 1 card per account. I mean even IGN had a guide on how to do it.

http://www.ign.com/wikis/ps...

Sony even made a statement about it: http://www.joystiq.com/2011...

So I'm guessing this is not an intended feature (multiple account on 1 card) but something Sony overlooked and is now fixing it.

So its probably really high time to make a price drop on those memory cards and start rolling out bigger capacity cards as well.
