Videogames are on the cusp of something “really exciting”, says Tomb Raider dev

IncGamers: Videogames have long struggled with serious themes. Whenever sex, homosexuality, drug dependence and the like are depicted in a legitimately (i.e. adult) way, the reaction from the mainstream media – and even sections of the dedicated videogame press – has been less than friendly.

It seems there are large swathes of the population that continue believe that games should be just that, games. They shouldn’t be a medium in which themes, idea and issues are depicted and explored.

In a recent interview with Tomb Raider global brand manager Karl Stewart, I asked him about that problem and if it is more difficult for games to approach delicate subject matter. Of course, Tomb Raider itself knows all about a backlash… as evidenced by the ridiculous and childish response many had to “attempted rape” comments. (Industry, PC, PS3, Tomb Raider, Xbox 360)

I love that someone disagreed with you, who clicks on an article about a game they have no interest in just to disagree with people that do?

Then what is the point of the disagree button?

Kind doubt this will be fresh & I expect it to follow most 3rd person shooters. I have been through this before..

Story might be good though.

It's interesting to see the new direction they're taking with such a long-standing character as Lara Croft. I hope it turns out well.

@Writer (if he sees this):

I spotted two mistakes in what's quoted above.

You mean dumbed down games for the casual audience leaving hardcore gamers bored to tears with nothing that excites them anymore, yeah real exciting. When i heard the new tomb raider won't even have puzzles i knew it was time to finally give up on a good tomb raider.

I wouldn't jump the gun yet. Tomb raider has sucked pretty much since the first one on ps1. This tomb raider looks dark and serious. They took a couple ideas from uncharted also and made it more scripted and cinimatic to appear like a good action flick it seems. I didn't care at all about a tomb raider until I seen the video for this new one. Really reminds me of a dark and serious uncharted.
