Cousens: Don't Dismiss Sony in Ten-Year Cycle

Codemasters CEO Rod Cousens says it would be unwise to dismiss the last-gen king in the latest console cycle, which he fully expects to last for a decade.

"I really do think it's going to be a ten-year cycle and I do think that's something that's been overlooked when people are fairly dismissive of certain hardware platforms," Cousens told Next-Gen.

Also understand Sony said the console itself will last 10 years didn't say when the PS4 will come out.
It will come out in 2014 probably.

Good hardware + great games = long life cycle.

Anyone that thinks the ps3 will be as dominating as the ps2 was is silly. The ps3 simply isn't the best choice for a game console. It wouldn't be selling now if no one knew the word playstation.

Sony established a brand called Playstation that has delivered on bringing great games before, and following their track record I don't see as to why it would be any different, Also note that the PS2 also had a slow start.

True, DFresh.

I think this guy has not yet understood that a 10 year life-cycle relates to the time a console is officially supported, not that it will take 10 years untill a new console comes out. The PS3 came out in Q4 2006 and the PS2 is still in production, so PS2's life-cycle has not yet terminated. Maybe this guy has been living in Mars for the last decade or so.

As for PS4 I think it will come out around the same time as the Xbox 720 or slighly later. Sony can't afford to let the next Xbox build up a strong following like it did this time around. Also notice that the PS3 came out a year later than expected due to problems or else it would have come out at the same time as Xbox 360. I expect the Xbox 720 to come out by Q4 2010 and the PS4 following it.

Same coment I did in the Open Zone:

You are totally right, the 10 cycle could just be with regards to how longs its supported, but Sony has not said either way. *IF* the ps3 isn't successful, there may be no ps4. According to some rumor on Digg, sony execs say 2010, but for how much money thats been invested into R&D for the ps3, that just seems really soon. As to when the 720 drops... who knows but I hope this time they make sure there aren't any design flaws in it before it hits production. *sigh*

Also notice that Sony is already making a profit in their gaming division, so any money they've put into R&D of the PS3 is already paid for. Also, the Cell was not developed for the PS3 alone, its going to be used in HDTVs also, so again its all profit.
I also think that PS4 is going to have some variation of the Cell, definetely with more PPEs instead of just one. So the research done for the PS3 will also pay off on the PS4.
