Do not think the Holiday would do much help unless Sony tackles the main issues which is the price and games.
Price for me is fine but when a soccer mom goes into a game store and see that the 3DS is cheaper she will pick that up as a xmas gift for kids.
Games are ok and more are coming but Sony needs games that are synonymous with the VITA like how the NIntendo has Professor Layton and Pokemon.
Sony also has to spend on Marketing...hell the Battle Royal Game was suppose to release in Oct but I have not seen any sort of ads - I asked a few of my mates if they were excited about the The PS brawler game and they had this big ? mark look on there faces.
Sony has more than enough recognized brands to attracted potential buyers. (uncharted, ratchet & clank, COD, LBP, Streetfighterxtekken, Madden, Fifa, Needforspeed, Assassin creed3l.....) On the hardware price i disagree with you. the machine is worth every penny. But i admit a memory card included would sweetened the deal. Remember how ps3 sold compares to ps2 the first year? Most people thought it was the end for ps3 . When you make a cutting edge hardware, you know it s not gonna be the cheapest but it will be worth It. Vita will be a success.
@Chirs - Your missing my point...those games that you mentioned are all good for you and me but to the casual mainstream consumer those game do not interest them or do not even excise where everybody and there grandma knows who Mario and Pokemon are.
The price is worth every penny becuase of the more powerful hardware but casuals consumers do not see it that way - they see 2 hand helds and they will buy the cheaper one, they do not care about specs.
Reminds me when everyone was moaning about the PS3's price at the start and complaining about needing a price cut when it was easily matching the PS2's sales from launch (until the recession took hold) and handily outselling the 360. We saw the same kind of doom articles for the PS3, Blu-Ray, the PSP, 3D, 3DS and we're seeing them now regarding the Vita and Wii-U.
Like garos said, the Vita hasn't even been available worldwide for a holiday season yet and everyone and their dog are jumping aboard the "Vita's Doomed" train. It's nice to see someone taking looking at the other side but for me, wake me when the thing's got a couple of years of sales data under it's belt and then we'll have a discussion on it's long term future.
Yet this isn't about PS3 or BR or 3DS. The Vita has been like this since it released. The Vita doesn't have Nintendo's pedigree of history. The Vita is has game announced that are not coming today. IS the Vita dead? NO
Is the Vita healthy? NO. You love to steer the conversation to focus about what happened in the past on other consoles. Vita is not the 3DS and the problems the 3DS had was only price. The Vita has multiple problems with it. Price, games, features and support. I work part time at Best Buy and I ask the question why is the Vita sitting in the back of the game section facing the wall of discounted 360 games?
The system isn't selling games now and this talk about holiday coming is a joke. We most likely will see a boost but what is this expectation that what? It going to just sale a bunch of games and memory cards and bundles. Vita is unknown to everyone. They have no games that appeal to the average consumer to go out and buy it because they rather get the console version. The PSP sold while the games didn't because it was a hacked system and the PSP has been dropped from support in North America for a couple of years now. This is Sony's last handheld. A price drop is not coming this year and the sales of the system is piss poor. The average consumer doesn't care about specs. If that was so it would be outselling the 3DS and every individual Android device would be outselling the Iphone on their own instead of grouping them together to show how they sale in comparison. Same thing for the iPad. It does not have mass appeal.
PS3 matched PS2 sales at launch? Come on dude you are just making that up. PS3 has done nothing but increase in sales since launch. So if it was selling the same as PS2 was at launch it would now be ahead of where the PS2 was in its life time and that is not the case at all.
We are all sick of the doom and gloom articles but please dont post flat out lies.
PS3 is a fine console and it doesnt need your lies to take away from all it has accomplished.
I know right and now the dude is actually sending me PMs with made up sales data to try to prove his lie is real...
We all know the PS3 did not start out selling as good as the PS2 did. Hell it wasnt that long ago that we cant remember it for ourselves...It's sales got better as it went along not worse.
No 600.00 console sold the same as a 300.00 console and no fake sales data will prove it either
@darkride, I'm not reading your PM no matter how many times you send it. I know for a fact the PS3 did not start out selling like the PS2 did. Hell it took me over a year to even find a PS2 in stores but only a week to find a PS3. Also the PS3 did not start losing sales. It's sales got better as the price dropped not worse.
Yup he did the samthing to me too. This guy PM's me with this huge rant plus HE sends me multiple PM's regarding other issues and then accuses me of being one sided as he BLOCKS me from responding.
All your credibilty is out the window Darkride, you may now get back to your "media" is biased against Sony rants.
Edit: I'm glad you decided to add 3DS and WiiU to your post after our last discussion *wink*
That guy will NEVER change he used to do the SAME exact thing since he started on here. It won't take you long to figure what he's all about..but it sounds like you already have..lol
On topic..I've gone on record to say that it would honestly take a couple of years before we know how hot Vita can get.
If they don't have a breakout year after two whole holidays with the standard price cuts and bundles etc. then it would be tough at that point to say it'll succeed.
It'll still need a true go-to game like COD getting hot on it for it to get the mass numbers they hope for. 3DS is selling because it'll get the kid market Nintendo always had..the adult market is really strained with smart phones..so it'll be interesting to see if Sony can get oover that hump.
You have to give Darkride credit for being persistent...at first when he had 5 bubbles I use to think that he was just a very big Sony supporter but now being reduced to one bubble makes him show his true color which is being a PS3 die fanboy that will stop at nothing to make Sony products look good.
Sony is in a big financial mess this year and has been for the last 3 year but some how Dark Rides manages to spin it and try to convince people that Sony are doing great financially in fact they are doing better than MS and Nintendo -_- then he PM's all this links that have no relevant proof that Sony is doing great.
I'll be buying a Wii U because I know what to expect from it. People sit back and say "oh people will buy it because its Nintendo" but they needed to do a lot to get that respect. An awful lot of the internet keep speaking out against them, and yet their systems sell like crazy on the outside world. I bet most of the people who "aren't sold" on the system either weren't going to buy it anyway or are in a very small fraction of the community.
The internet = something which seems to make a lot more noise than what it really makes. Three bloggers on the internet is three sales lost. I'm sure Nintendo won't lose sleep over that.
they were just as critical of Sony as they were of Nintendo.
As a matter of fact one of their pod cast even said that Nintendo does not have to worry about the same problem that Sony has with the PSVita, because they said that Nintendo in the Handheld industry is safe.
would anyone really say the same thing for Microsoft or Sony or for any company for that matter? ouytside of Nintendo? I doubt it, but when Apple was first releasing the iPhone look what than CEO of Microsoft said about the iPhone:
good podcast Though i would like to comment on the PSVita, and How Sony is going to tackle those very good point's you brought up about the PSVita's trouble in the market.
Sony may not make another dedicated gaming Handheld after the PSVita, but for good reason they may not have too, Already Sony has a smartphone production and distribution for their own smartphones, the PSVita is using the very same core chipset's as what is in over 90% of all smartphones already, just a little bit Higher than many will have for the next year or Two. Quad core SOC chipst's will be the next standard ARM Cortex base platform for smartphones and Smartphones and Tablet's, but not at least for the next 2 year's. Even than the current Hardware performance by the PSVita is more than capable to keep up in that length of time. The reason being even still today the most largest install base for Hardware in Mobile's is still Single core ARM Cortex 1 GHz to 1.5 GHz and will remain so until mid to late 2014 at least. The very fact that many companies are make dual core and Higher SOC's installed into their smartphones today, still have to overcome the existing Single Core SOC chipset's before developer's will start to take advantage of those Multiple core SOC's.
the thing is these "SuperPhones" if you will, are ready for such a change, the PSVita has hardware that is even better than the iPad 3 but until the smartphone developer's take advantage of the chipset's inside the smartphone fully the PSVita with lower resolution and screen size will still outperform the running the software on those very powerful systems on a chip. So the PSVita will be quite viable even sofar as past 2014 for performance level of High End Game software development.
Price is where Sony is really going to have to work on the reduction, Even though the level of the PSVita in Hardware is as IT EVEN CAN BEST THE IPad 3 IN PERFORMANCE, Sony still has to increase the Value further of the PSVita because of the Perception of the PSVita being limited over than what the iPad 3 can do, which is not the case, but it's what it's seen as right now, which the fact that Sony is making quite the investment into the Playstation Mobile as a way to offset that problem.
And last but not least and really the most important problem for Sony to overcome is the games issue, which Sony's Gamescomm Event , I think showed Sony to be quite invested into the PSVita's development to bring good quality Exclusives to the system. And with Sony having 0ver 60 new developer and publishing partner's added from the Playstation Mobile with 30 new games for this fall added, it think its a very good start on How they are going to fix those problems
Sony should get out of the dedicated hardware portable game and dedicate those resources to their mobile sector.
PSV doesn't beat iPad 3 in performance as the CPU is comparable but iPad wins and by GPU on the iPad and Vita are the same. Also iPad has more RAM and on board storage.
If they are in the business of making money than that would be the smart thing to do as you can place their games on their phones exclusively and gives them a selling point. Those who want actual controls then Sony can make the Xperia Play 2 which would have a 720p screen 2GB Ram 12 MP Camera and sell it for $200 on contract.
omg..stop just stop it "PSV doesn't beat iPad 3 in performance as the CPU is comparable but iPad wins and by GPU on the iPad and Vita are the same. Also iPad has more RAM and on board storage. "
the Ipad wins GPU? OMFG!
you do know the PSVita and the Ipad 3 are using the very same sgx543mp4 class GPU!
and to top it off the PSVitas SGX has the added plus function.
AS for ram the iPad 3 does not have 128 MB of dedicated VRram, the PSVita does. the Ipad 3 has 1 GB of shared system Ram which the base is 64 MB of that shared is used for the GPU. yes the Ipad 3 HAS MORE On Board RAM TO SHARE THAN THE psvITA IS ALSO HAS MORE PROCESSING OVERHEAD, AND HAS TO PUSH MORE RESOLUTION for a much larger screen.
the PSVita may only have 512 MB of system ram , but it does have 128 MB of dedicated Video chip ram for Graphic's intensive task's which for Games is kinda required!
"you do know the PSVita and the Ipad 3 are using the very same sgx543mp4 class GPU!"
I clearly stated that in my piece and I never said iPad won the GPU I said the CPU. I used the word "and" which separated my ideas on the GPU and CPU.
"PSV doesn't beat iPad 3 in performance as the CPU is comparable but iPad wins AND by GPU on the iPad and Vita are the same. Also iPad has more RAM and on board storage."
It is hardly a point worth arguing over as my point wasn't about the iPad really as more about business practices.
stupid websites like N4g, ign, gamertag...... created that problem. Vita never lacked games. And there is games for every genres. How many games 3ds had 7 months after launch??
sony should put a load of adverts out there with kids and familys etc... showing the various things you can do (AR cards etc...) and show them having fun it worked for nintendo.
@JBSleek And i point out the GPU's are of the same SGX class but are not the same, and the A5 is a dual core A9 while the PSVita is a Quad Core A9. even than even in CPU level the iPad 3 still does not beat out the PSVita's Quad Core Cortex A9.
So once again no the iPad 3 does not beat out the PSVita despite your Diatribe.
"It is hardly a point worth arguing over as my point wasn't about the iPad really as more about business practices"
than why the hell did you bring it up?
you stated that Sony need's to get out of the dedicated game Handheld biz and put more toward the Mobile space, hello they can do both!
why is it seem's that many only want Nintendo alone in this part of the market? do people not like having another choice for a dedicated Game handheld or something? Only Sony right now is the only other company besides Nintendo that make dedicated Game handhelds, that means if Nintendo is not going to have a market all by them selves, how is that a bad thing for consumer's?
Imean already Nintendo makes the Nintendo 3ds which is a very good machine, but it only has 6 MB of dedicated Video ram, while the only other company that makes a dedicated Game handheld has their system with 128 MB of dedicated Video ram. At least if people want a dedicated Game Handheld system to offer those higher spec's they can get one. Without Sony being in this part of the Market you would not even have that choice, if it was up to just Nintendo.
I do not know about you but i would like to play some games that may take advantage of those higher spec's over time instead of maybe having to upgrade the system sooner rather than later because of some system limit's later down the line may prevent that. That's with anything of course, but atleast i have the option off the bat that i would not have otherwise with Sony having a dedicated handheld also in this part of the market if it was just Nintendo by themselves.
Funny, there was an article a few weeks back on the "best 25 PS Vita games" and one guy commented that he didn't know there were 25 games at the time (he got disagrees from all the PS fanboys, obviously and one of them aggressively told him that there were, in fact, 60 games, and he would know that if he weren't such a troll). I looked at what's available in the 2 biggest electronic retailers in Canada, and there are only about 30 games available(!), some of which are barely retouched version of older games, and not all of those games are available at the store.
I looked at the list of new PS Vita games on PSN this month and, guess what? No new games this month, like last month, and the month before.
I hope Sony really keep their promise and deliver more unique games on the Vita (and FAST!) - I haven't bought one yet because IMO there are only 1 to 5 games that are worth the buck, and $250 for such a low number of games is kinda expensive... Thankfully, the Vita will get PSOne compatibility soon (Aug 28)... Maybe it will be worth its price then... The value of a console is based on the games you can play on it, not just its specs (although that has an impact on what games will be playable on that console)...
Sorry born2live but telling me that after 7 months 3ds was only $170 compares to $250 can be explain by the fact that people were not stupid enough to pay $250 for last gen technology with pseudo3d . You do not have to agree with me, all you have to do is put both machine side by side and you,ll understand that vita is well worth the price. Now, you can wait for a price drop if you can,t afford but you cannot criticize it by comparing it with a much inferior product
@chris - I agree that the Vita is a better machine, I'm just saying it doesn't have the games to support it right now. And a console is only as good as its games.
Price for me is fine but when a soccer mom goes into a game store and see that the 3DS is cheaper she will pick that up as a xmas gift for kids.
