Realism in Call of Duty

The shooter genre is arguably the most dominating presence in the video game market. Gamers seem to harbor an intrinsic fascination with the utilization of vast assortments of weaponry against hordes of enemies in the pursuit of victory. But what if real warfare was like Call of Duty? (Call of Duty: Black Ops, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Culture, PC, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360)

"Why do you think Saving Private Ryan has never been made into a video game?" No but parts of these types of films are recreated in video games (Medal of honour: Frontline).

I think realism can work but the problem is War isn't as fast paced as it is in games. You do not have a wonder squad that does everything while the other section sit back and have some tea. Games like Call of Duty are faced paced but there are other games out there (like the original operation flashpoint and ARMA) which show realistic war scenarios

Photo realistic is determined by the hardware and at the moment it isn't there. That is why you do not see visual realism at the moment.

Exactly. Most combat also takes place between 500-1000 meters. Cod it's all up in yo face! And many company's in the military go weeks without seein combat. Some people see none at all in service.

Well conventional war is usually over greater distances (except in urban areas) but insurgency war is usually much more close quarter and shoot and scoot kind of warfare because it being a far better tactic (well now its the unseen danger of IEDs).

Only thing "real" in COD now is the Elite price gouging.

We shouldn't be trying to make game more like real life.
We should be trying to make real life more like games.

Who's up for some respawns, jetpacks and teabagging?

I will pass on the teabagging but re spawns and jet packs sound useful.

Realism and COD in the same sentence... my head almost exploded!

Majority of video games purposefully stray away from ultra realism. Why? Because its fun. Noone wants to sit inside a military base doing their hourly guard duties before heading off to clean out their rifle then head out for some more guard duty, No. Gamers want to be thrown into action, they want to be challenged by situations that would normally be impossible to survive and survive them. If real life combat were the same as it was in call of duty our soldiers would be so over encumbered with ammunition that they would be crawling across the battlefield.
