Epic Games Says Mobile Games are Competing with Current Consoles - Soon to be PC

Epic Games is certainly one studio that has never shied away from voicing its opinion. Whether it is the entire studio or specific members, Epic does not sit quietly by. The latest opinion may not be a huge shock to some people, but still it is something interesting to consider. Epic's Niklas Smedberg says mobile games are "starting to compete with current consoles," which in turn has made development more complex. Smedberg likened mobile development to PC development by saying there are dozens of hardware specifications and platforms to consider. Epic scales its development from high to low for the games, since Smedberg says the studio never does the minimum. (Casual games, Epic Games, Industry, Mobile, Niklas Smedberg, PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

Ok
As much as I like my iPad, I don,t use it for serious gaming for one simple reason..... CONTROL. You can,t replicate the accuracy of a analogue stick on a touch screen it's as simple as that and until there are some actual control pads or even some kind of software allowing you to use say a 360 control pad then I will never game on a mobile device. I would much rather sit on a comfy couch playing on a huge screen.

exactly my thoughts, just worded differently

agree.
hell to the fuken no to the simple games and control.

I AM A HARDCORE GAMER!!!
I NEED BIG SCREEN, REPONSIVE CONTROL, MATURE RATED GAMES AND GRAPHIC POWER!!!

Another classic article about a classic comment from Epic.

mobile games are TYPICALLY shallow and are boring after short stints and are decent time killers on the road, wothout the use of analog sticks and exterior buttons, ill never become a mobile gamer.

Touch screens, for example the game Dead Trigger, while its an above average mobile game as far as gameplay, the controls ruin it for me.

Final Fantasy III. Is this a Shallow title?
Sgt_Slaughter  +   616d ago
Really? A game that wasn't even a mobile game to begin with is the 1 game you try to make an argument for?

Hahahahahaha XD

I use a PS3 controller on my GNex. There is even a company that makes a case that attaches the controller to the phone.
LAZL0-Panaflex  +   615d ago
Exactly, and you could connect it to an HDTV if u wanted too! Something these knuckleheads can't fathom.

The statement has merit. By no means was the article saying that on a graphical level do the compete but yet for money and peoples' time you can clearly see that is true.

Mobile competes with console gaming in that retrospect. The mobile controls and graphics aren't there yet but are improving at such an impressive rate that 2-3 years we could be looking at mobile gaming with the same fidelity as current consoles.

Some gamers prefer mobile some prefer console/PC but they are still both equally gaming.

Next year is the year mobiles rival consoles vita is almost there asis and mobiles will have twice the ram and better soc's 2013 mobiles will show how this gen has aged
Sorry has he seen Crysis 3 dx11? How would one get that on iPad? PC is not mainstream so as far as casual small games goes ipad is competing with facebook games not real pc games.. I really wish Epic was in charge because they make the best games not the most accessible engine.. Mediocre devs..

Big talk from devs who only made one successful game in the last 7 years on console.

Let see ipad compete with planetside 2.

I hope crytek has the best engine next gen to get them off there high horse.

Also why are they not making fortnight for android instead?

epic really thinks mobile games can compete with world of warcraft and guild wars 2 and not to mention all the other games out there.

epic is out of there minds
majiebeast  +   616d ago
This is so true just look at games like cut the rope, angry birds, fruit ninja and infinity blade, those are about as good as say a uncharted a Halo or Zelda game /S Please just shut it Epic we know you been sucking Ios ass for some time but thinking mobile games are competing with console's is just ridiculous.

Well in terms of graphical power phones are definitely catching up to consoles unless this gen is over with. Look at the Tegra 3 GPU it can do some really nice stuff and its on a phone? Things can only go further and Tegra 4 is in the works which will close the gap even more!

Phones have already surpassed the Wii so just think about it

Heres an example of Tegra 3:

Nice lighting, horrible resolution and gameplay. Touch doesnt cut it for big games.
fossilfern  +   616d ago
I know that touch doenst do it for gaming but you can easily sync a bluetooth controller and then display the phone on the TV through HDMI or Wireless display which my phone supports.

Nvidia claim the Tegra 4 will be twice as powerful and the Tegra 3 so honestly I dont see how its unrealistic having a phone as one of your main gaming platforms.

Hey Epic Games, just repeating the same thing over and over and over again doesn't make it true, no matter how much you want it to be true.

Console gamer's and mobile gamer's have different agendas.
LAZL0-Panaflex  +   615d ago
Obama keeps saying lies and people grow to believe them no matter how outlandish they may be.
ChunkyLover53  +   615d ago
Well lies from Obama are easy to research. He is running a clearly negative campaign because he has nothing in his time as president to run on, so of course he is going to mud sling.

I think negative ads will end up hurting him more in the end. The question I always ask people is simple. Are you happy with how things are right now? If not, then its time for a change.
Angrymorgan  +   616d ago
Sales wise maybe
Quality wise hell no!
Sgt_Slaughter  +   616d ago
My thoughts are that the mobile gaming fad will pass over by 2014 and something else will capture the casuals interests just like a snap of a finger.
Saryk  +   616d ago
I've been saying this two years ago here.

Mobile gaming is here, it will only get better and more powerful!
DEATHxTHExKIDx  +   615d ago
LOL mobile games are rlly just small time killers if for whatever reason I cant play my 360/PS3 or my 3DS/PSP. THey cant go nearly as far as an actual game console or handheld.
LAZL0-Panaflex  +   615d ago
And so it begins...
DudeJets  +   615d ago
Epic are shit. That is all.

Actually I have put about 10 hours into final fantasy 9 on my phone but that's cause I have emulators running if I didn't I wouldn't play anything on it
