Sony had to "re-do" work on The Last Guardian, still a PS3 game

Eurogamer:

Eye-catching Team Ico title still alive, Yoshida confirms.

What's happening with The Last Guardian, the eye-catching PlayStation 3 exclusive once due out late 2011?

We asked Sony Worldwide Studios chief Shuhei Yoshida that same question during an interview at Gamescom today. (PS3, Shuhei Yoshida, The Last Guardian)

I really hope its not a massive mess of a game when it's released, I'm guessing late 2013 release. It still looks good.
FinaLXiii  +   748d ago
it wont be as long Sony keeps supporting the game.

Glass half full grasshopper, I look at it as this is a good thing. They aren't pushing it out the door half-finished, they are making sure things are up to snuff. A lot of devs now a days have no problem pushing something out the door when it's not ready, glad they aren't doing that.

If it was microsoft they would've rushed it to the market 2 years ago..
Emilio_Estevez  +   747d ago
@ Awesome,

No, just no. For all the bad things people say MS has done, putting out unfinished games is certainly not one of them.
mewhy32  +   747d ago
I have a feeling that their ambitions for the game outweight the ability of the machine to carry them out. It's a widely known fact that the ico team has been facing "technical" issues since the beginning of development. I'm very very disappointed. This was the primary reason that I purchased my ps3 slim and now it's probably not going to make a release until ps4.

It's usually primarily the publishers that push out unfinished games.
Although who knows if this is due to pressures from the platform owner.

Its good to see they are striving for quality with this title, maybe they are being too ambitious? this is never a bad thing.

Well, games for the PS2 and PSP continue to be made in Japan, so there is a high likelihood that there will be a PS4 next year.
Conzul  +   747d ago
I find myself not caring, what with all these awesome exclusives and whatnot.
Blastoise  +   747d ago
It should be epic, Shadow of the colossus was released at the end of the PS2's life cycle and was really pushing the hardware to the max.
So I assume it will be the same again with the PS3's hardware, and the PS3 is still doing some pretty damn impressive stuff (Last of us, Beyond) :)

No, that's a Microsoft thing.

RARE, anyone?

A big *sigh* of relief knowing that this title is still in development and will eventually see the light of day, or well the corridors of the inside of my ps3.
A developer diary would be fascinating to watch. I actually want to know, perhaps in detail, most of the obstacles they had to face to create this game. It'd be a sweet documentary if they could place it on the disc.

agree totally god of war 3 does this great. alot of videos and movies esplaining all the stuff santa monica went through to get the game to where it was
DA_SHREDDER  +   748d ago
Sony, I love you, but, seriously, um, all that money you could have used to get yourself out of the red? Or hired a team to compete against GTA or Skyrim/Fallout? A big "sigh" indeed Full. Indeed.

Edit. Better yet, spent that money to get phantasy star online on the ps3.

Really worried that they will disband Team ICO after the game releases.
Sevir  +   748d ago
Team Ico is apart of Japan Studios for Sony
Team Ico is about 100 men strong and Japan studio is 600 man team... They don't close team ico it wouldn't make sense since they are just a sub division of Japan Studios just like Clap Handz and Polyphony Digital are.
Paballo  +   747d ago
Depending on how well the game sells they may or may not close the studio of Team ICO.
Hopefully after this game they make a new PS vita IP.
PS Network new IP.
and then start working on a ps4 IP.
why?because in this industry working on triple AAA game for 8 years takes its toll on developers and is not as glamorous as people make it up to be.Just look at what happened to the developers of LA Noire......
Even when the game sold so well and over 3million copies the studio still made a loss and was closed.
The developers at team Virgil say the same thing.
So after the last of us it would be nice to see a PSN and PS vita game from Team ICO just to ensure stakeholders and shareholders that Team ICO is still a great ASSET to Japan studio.Cant help but feeling that Fumito Ueda left and only works as a contractor because of the project was just taking too long and ran into too many development hurdles. One thing for sure the morale of the team ICO must be very low.
Its up to us gamers to support this game now.

This game always looked really intresting to me, I'm glad to hear that they are sorting out there problems, and not realeasing it as a broken product. I'm glad it's still going to release sometime in the future, Can't wait to try it out.

"seems you dont have a single clue about team ico.
so please just shush and go back to CoD kkthxbb"

I'm well aware of who they are or who they used to be. Its obvious that this game and studio is having issues with its development. They haven't produced one game this entire generation.
Hicken  +   747d ago
Your point? Not every studio out there is going to pump out a title every year, or every two years.

Some developers take as much time as they need(provided they have a publisher with that kind of faith in them) and make one superb game.

IF you were well aware of who they "were," you'd be less worried. IF you weren't an anti-Sony fanboy, you might have a different opinion.

IF you knew what you were talking about, you would have said something less ignorant.

So God of War: Ascension, The Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, and The Last Guardian all coming out next year???????? If that is the case then that would be pretty fucking epic and would make 2013 a damn good year.

Pretty sure if Agent, Eight Days, The Getaway 3, and FFVXIII aren't canned. They'll probably be PS4 launch titles.

I don't know what to make of these comments.

Was Team ICO overwhelmed by the PS3 architecture?

Was the game's "IDEA" too big for their small development team?

Above all for me, it confirms the game is still in development, which is what we've all been wondering lately.......

I just hope this game turns out great, because ICO and SOTC are Classics.

I hope this is too.
chrisarsenalsavart  +   748d ago
if sony did not ended the production after 6_years development it means they know they have something truly special in their hands.
izumo_lee  +   748d ago
I was really hoping that the game would have made the transition over to the PS4 if the concept/vision of Fumito Ueda was not met with the PS3, like the difficult architecture of the PS3 held back the overall idea he originally envisioned.

I have faith in Team Ico & their talent in delivering memorable experiences so i hope this game will be just that.

When the game is released i hope reviewers judge the game for its merits rather than the judge it for its long development time. Like what happened with GT5 & the unfair nitpick the game got.
Baka-akaB  +   748d ago
I dont even see the point of hoping that . I mean when he'll be developping on PS4 , the guy will still feel restricted and confined by the hardware , just like the ps2 did for ico and colossus .

He's the kind of guy imo that will always see bigger and bigger and have to tone things down to a level any hardware could handle
ElementX  +   747d ago
Somehow I doubt Last Guardian will be anything like it started out to be. With key members leaving the team they're going to rely on new ideas to fill in the gaps.
Roccetarius  +   747d ago
After the long development time for this, where will all the positives be? Surely the ideas will be dated at release.
jeromeface  +   747d ago
That's whats great about innovation, unless copied beforehand its never dated.
Paballo  +   747d ago
this game is definitely coming out Q4 2013 which is more than what I can say for versus.
Like I said if I dont see versus at TGS this year then it is dead to me.
2013 is the year of Sony.......Sony may have to push some of its exclusives to 2014 Q1 to give this game a fair chance to make the sales it needs to.
Best of it we may see more vita exclusives then ps3 exclusives.
