Prez Pitchford & Gearbox Deny Girlfriend Mode: But Will You Still Buy?

Gearbox President Randy Pitchford tweets back against the backlash caused by Borderlands 2's supposed girlfriend mode. No formal apologies have been issued yet from designer John Hemmingway who originated the term, but will you still pick up the game this September? (Borderlands, Gearbox Software, PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

Yes....yes I will still buy it. The quote was taken out of context and it doesn't change my opinion of the game.

I'm going to pick up the game too. Seems like too much ado about nothing. I almost feel bad for Gearbox, but I suppose any publicity for an upcoming game is good publicity, right?

I wonder if designer Hemmingway will get in trouble though....

why wouldnt i buy the sequel when i absolutely loved the first game?

I haven't played the original Borderlands so... maybe? Although I consider myself a feminist I think the reaction has been SLIGHTLY over the top. Sure, it's idiotic, but is it worth boycotting a game over? I don't think so, not on its own. If it is the first in a series of offenses, then yes. But it's a really little thing, in my opinion.

That title is oversimplifying, took randy's response totally out of context. Randy denied the fact that the best friend tree was actually called the girlfriend mode. Internet oversimplification is one of the main reasons internet activism doesn't work well.

Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn about what these guys say. I'll buy it whatever happens.

Don't care what the producers/designers/devs say. Loved the first game, and based on what I've seen thus far, I will love the second game.

Screw the internet's over blown reaction!

Any time you see Pitchford, you think of a pitchfork, don't you?. Admit it.

NOW I will. Thanks... -_-

I love how the "press" is trying their absolute hardest to make a mountain out of a molehill again. They warped and skewed their words in an attempt to rile gamers in to a frenzy (imagining we'd be clicking on every update and regurgitated opinion), counting on the attraction of this year's big hot-button issue: sexism in games. But you've over-played your hand. There is no scandal here, and everyone (including you) knows it, but yet still you try to pass it off as one, desperate for clicks.

Not this time.

Borderlands is 1 of the best new IP's this gen imo, This is a day 1 buy for me.

That game was pre-ordered the day I could pre-order. The "girlfriend mode" was the stupidest thing to comment about. Too many people especially journalist need to take a Prozac!

Out of curiosity, are there any female gamers out there who will not be purchasing the game because of Hemingway's nickname for "Best Friends Forever"?

Personally, I'm not at all offended by the moniker because I'm quite sure it wasn't meant in a harmful way. If it was something like the "Girls Suck So They Need Help" Skill Tree, then of course. But I read the original statement and I felt it was more of a sexist joke which backfired massively in his face. We hear sexist jokes all the time on TV, in movies, at the workplace. Not sure how this is different. Not that it makes it right, but it doesn't make this the gender Armageddon either.

i can't see it affecting my decision to buy this one.
but their choice not to have any playable women in their alien game will definitely put me off buying that.

Gearbox can call my mom a whore and I would still buy borderlands 2

Gearbox could donate their profits to Nazis (I'm Jewish) and I'd still buy Borderlands 2. Looks great!!

This was all just a big misunderstanding. Of coarse I'm still going to get this game on day one!
