In Defense Of From Software's 'Dark Souls' PC Edition

Forbes, Erik Kain- "Much has been made of the news surrounding Dark Souls and its upcoming PC edition lately. Gamers are upset that the game has an internal resolution of 1024 x 720 (even though you can set the resolution output to fit your monitor) and that it will be locked at 30 frames-per-second.

I’ve been a bit agnostic about all of this. I’m not terribly concerned with the graphics in Dark Souls. The game looks fine as it stands, and the mad genius of the game’s mechanics are what keep me hopelessly addicted in the first place. The game could look much worse or much better and I doubt I’d particularly care."

Don't get me wrong....I'm glad Dark Souls is coming to PC and I will buy it eventually. I get why people are a bit upset over it. Console gamers say things like "just play it at 720p you PC elitists! be glad you're getting the game!" To be fair, if a console (ps3/360) game gets released and it's locked at 480p, console gamers would complain to no end.

PC gamers have been used to 1080p and 60fps gameplay for longer than the current gen consoles have been out. It's the standard and Dark Souls isn't meeting the bare minimum for what is considered PC gaming standard - hence the complaints.

Hell, IIRC, L.A. Noire was locked at 30fps at launch and thanks to mods, it now runs at 60fps. I'll wait a Dark Souls mod that allows me to play the game at 1080p and 60fps to be released before I get it :)

First of all console gamers get games that runs 640p like Call of Duty and the only thing they complain about are campers. The ps3 version dark souls has screen tearing and framerate drops things that actually hamper your experience and you're complaining about how many pixels are on screen. They already made money off the console version and half of the PC gamers are probably just gonna pirate it anyway.

...I don't know if you and srcbfm are just misremembering, but there was a huge stink when Halo and CoD both released entries that ran sub-HD. I remember it quite vividly.

"To be fair, if a console (ps3/360) game gets released and it's locked at 480p, console gamers would complain to no end."

I'd really have to disagree with you there dude. Never have I heard any console gamer (Which is pretty much everyone around me) ever complain about a game being released below HD. The only time I really ever hear about that stuff from console gamers is in console wars. Other than that. Nada. All they really cared about was to just play the game, and were grateful it was even coming to their platform. lol.

@Kamikaze135

Yup, pretty sure of it.

Nerdmaster1949d ago (Edited 1949d ago )

Are you serious?

Red Dead Redemption sub-HD on PS3
http://n4g.com/news/525541/...
"Sub-HD on PS3 isn't really acceptable anymore"
"I'm a PS3 zealot and this really sucks"
"ps3 fanboys never shutup about 360 sub-hd games"

This is just one example I found by a quick search. If you have time, you'll find lots more.

These days console gamers are complaining less about these things because they learned that PS3 and 360 were never powerful enough to make good HD and full-HD games, so sub-HD is the norm. But PC gamers are playing full-HD and 60fps for years, so there's no excuse for something below it.

@Nerdmaster

So you've found an article that's more than two years old. Good for you buddy.

Kamikaze135 said "To be fair, if a console (ps3/360) game gets released and it's locked at 480p, console gamers would complain to no end."

But your saying "These days console gamers are complaining less about these things because they learned that PS3 and 360 were never powerful enough to make good HD and full-HD games".

Now how the hell does that make sense? lol You guys are literally contradicting yourself. First you guys are saying console gamers would complain to no end if a game is released in sub HD again. But now your saying they wouldn't complain as much because sub HD is the norm? Hahahahah wow. And it's also pretty pathetic that you guys have to use the "Well you guys do it so it's fine if we do" argument.

You said "But PC gamers are playing full-HD and 60fps for years, so there's no excuse for something below it."

Which is also a part of my point, and what Vashlion said below.

"Moral of the story is pc gamers. You bitched and petitioned for Dark souls to be on PC, they did it. They didn't have to but they did (with extra content). Be grateful and buy the game if you signed that petition. If you're pirating it, well the message you'll be sending to devs is pc gaming is a waste of time and no one wants that message to be sent."

From Software also ported Ninja Blade at it has the options to run at variable fps or locked either 30 or 60 fps. It may be a different game than Dead Souls but at least they proved that they can do it so locking it at 30fps only is quite strange.

Ducky1949d ago

I believe that the PC version of Ninja Blade was outsourced to a different developer that was familiar with the PC platform. The port was still bad, but at least had basic options that are expected in PC games.

Letros1949d ago

I understand WHY it is like this, but I don't buy all this Western/Japanese excuses. Capcom develops on the PC and ports to consoles as well as Square Enix. I will wait for reviews and may just pick it up on launch day.

rdgneoz31949d ago

They're not Capcom, they're not nickle and diming people to death. I don't see it as a Western/Japanese excuse, I see it more as a developers preference. They developed the game with consoles in mind first and made it the way they were comfortable with.

Or, when you see a large group of people interested in your product, people that will go out of their way to make their voices heard . . . perhaps try and not phone in your product.

They didn't port the game out of the kindness of their hearts. They did it because they saw potential profit in it. Well, you are developing for a platform that has a minimum set of standards required. They didn't meet said standards, and people, despite requesting the port or not, shouldn't be expected to welcome the game with open arms. This is one of the weakest ports in a long while, and I see nothing wrong with people complaining. As someone else said, if a developer locked a 360/PS3 game at 480p, people would be complaining. And the graphics are only part of the issue gamers have with the pc port.

As far as those talking about pirating goes, they are idiots. Self-entitled idiots shouldn't be seen as the spokespersons for the platform. They are likely the ones who were going to be pirating the game no matter how the finished product came out. A lot of the people I have talked to said, while they won't be buying the game at launch, they will be picking it up at a significant price drop. At a cost that the port is actually worth.

yeahokchief1949d ago

bingo. i can't wait for this game to flop on pc so that they are exposed for what they are.

STONEY41948d ago (Edited 1948d ago )

Forget the piracy stuff for a minute (I don't even see any people mentioning that they're going to pirate). This is acceptable for a PC game?

All we expected when we signed the petition was a bare minimum port. I wasn't expecting any graphics options, HD textures, and I knew it would probably use annoying Games For Windows Live (GFWL). Bare minimum, but acceptable. No complaints for something that wouldn't even have released on PC anyways.

But no, it's way below even the worst of PC ports. Locked framerate? Locked resolution, which I've never even seen happen? Getting kicked from multiplayer if your framerate dips for more than 10 seconds? Framerate problems even on good GPUs?

Like everyone else is saying, it's like if someone ported a really popular Wii game to PS3, but had the resolution at 480p and, say, 20fps. That's horrible. Everyone would by screaming about how bad the port was. Imagine if the MGS Collection was at 480p and had framerate issues? Same thing.

TardcoreGamer1949d ago

Have it for ps3 already. I really want to have it on pc when i hear it can run at 60 in 1080 or if there's an ENB series for it. Buy then it should be a $10 steal on steam. YAY!

rdgneoz31949d ago

Or you can get the DLC for the PS3 when it releases in the winter for $15...

"Meanwhile, the difference between 30 fps and 60 fps, while noticeable, is not enough to make or break a game for me."

Well it does for me. Not supporting crappy port no Mather what game it is. Prob gonna wait for torrent ..
