Why We Need More Shenmue

TGC writes: Over the past year or so, the gaming world has had the release of certain games that have had terribly long production times – namely Duke Nukem Forever and Diablo III. The difference between the two, though, is DNF was critically slammed by almost every major publication, while Diablo III was praised worldwide. Now we’re only missing three games trapped in development – Kingdom Hearts III, Half-Life III, and Shenmue III. All of those three-quels deserve attention but arguably the least likely to ever appear is, unfortunately, Shenmue. Many people may not have heard of this Dreamcast classic, so here’s a quick run through of what Shenmue was, and what could be done to make a third game even greater. (PC, PS3, Shenmue III, Wii, Xbox 360)

Shenmue revolutionized many things in gaming. It was a game that was way ahead of it's time. S1 & S2 are my favorite games ever

Come on Sega, make it happen. Lan Di has been on the run far too long.

The problem is they were expensive games and nobody bought them. The only people who will buy Shenmue 3 are those who played the first two which is not that many. Maybe SEGA should at least re-release them on psn/xbl in HD to get a gauge on just how popular it is. Good though they were I think outside such places as N4G nobody really cares about it.

S1 sold over a million copies. S2 on DC only released in asia and europe. S2 on xbox was a huge mistake for reasons i don't need to explain. And in order for S1 to turn a profit everybody who owned a DC had to buy the game twice. That was sega's fault just like it was their fault for putting it on xbox when it would have sold a lot more on the ps2.

I think too much time has passed so the best decision for the series would be to reboot it for the next gen consoles. Of course Sega would need major financial support from an outside publisher (maybe Microsoft).

TBH another Shenmue would not make sense since the orignal developers are no longer together and I can not think of any studio right now that can bring the same magic that SEGA AM2 brought.

Maybe if Yu Suzuki, Fumito Ueda, Tomonobu Itagaki, Goichi Suda started a studio with a huge budget at hand then I would say do it.

Edit: Also Sega Japan's CS1 Team would probably do a descent job on a new Shenmue being that Yakuza almost feels like a successor.

considering shenmue 2 came out over 10 years ago it seems really unlikely that 3 will ever come out..but I would freaking love to be proven wrong!!! cmon sega

Hence why an HD remake of Shenmue 1 and 2 makes perfect sense. Have Sega see how well it sells, possibly gain a lot of new fans who missed out on Shenmue the first time around.

Sega did it with their Virtua Fighter 5: FS console port (to see if it was worth making Virtua Fighter 6(sales exceeded expectations)) so why not do it again?

Sega might think Yakuza is a better investment. I would still love to see a third Shenmue game.

I'd buy a console for Shenmue 3.

The franchise has a HUGE fan following. Millions signed an online petition a few years back saying they would pay for a sequel. Shenmue 1 was a success. It sold very well for the Dreamcast. It cost too much to make and the install base for the console was too small to create a finacial success, but that was SEGA's fault, not Shenmue's. Also, Shenmue was so ahead of its time it cost a fortune to develop. These days, Shenmue 3 wouldn't break a publishers piggy bank. Its very doable.

I really want to see a third game. Shenmue 2 was one of my favorite early xbox releases, and I have spent many, many hours with that game.

Hell, it even got me to buy a dreamcast just to play the original. Along with a few other games, of course.

The world needs more open-world adventure games. It's time for a true revival.

Was KH3 or HL3 ever in development? this article is just a load of crap.

Shenmue III news or articles should be banned, only makes fans of the series want the sequel a little more. Shenmue was a great series in my opinion but just hurts thinking that I could never play the ending of the game.

I think of it like Shenmue is my allowance.

"I need more allowance!"
Why?"
"Because I do!"

Sega, you have to give Shenmue a proper ending. This series and its fans deserves it.

Shenmue 3 will always be on my wish list, till it happens.
