Epic Fatigue

How many times have you, as a gamer, saved the world or the universe? It could be ten, twenty or even fifty times but the story is generally the same, especially when it boils down to the standard “Aliens have invaded, fight back” or various riffs on such a theme. I’m getting a little tired of the grandiose nature of the current gaming landscape due to this focus on the “epic” scale of things. It feels as if a developer doesn’t have a fist-pumping narrative to really show off in trailers and interview then the game won’t sell, which is quite possibly true but as we increase the scale we lose a lot of personality leading to faceless scale and boring characters. (Culture, PS3, Xbox 360)

Sometimes i don't want to save the world, or defeat an alien invasion. There are lots of games that don't focus on that. Just focus on them for awhile for some easy rejuvination. Games like Journey, Dark Souls, Lumines, etc. will do the trick.

I think this is an interesting article, or at least topic of discussion.

I second those suggestions you made.

The walking dead and Just Cause 2 have been my personal salvation.

As long as the execution is interesting and fresh, then I don't see how the "save the world" plot would badly affect a game.
